I just thought, from the "Songs you don't understand" thread, that it would be good to post those lyrics that have some real meaning, or simply make you happy.

I love this song mainly for the blatent sexuality of the lyrics, although it also harks back to the flush of young love and reminds me of the thrill of those first encounters...

[Velvet Green - Jethro Tull]
Won't you have my company, yes, take it in your hands.
Go down on velvet green, with a country man.
Who's a young girls fancy and an old maid's dream.
Tell your mother that you walked all night on velvet green.
One dusky half-hour's ride up to the north.
There lies your reputation and all that you're worth.
Where the scent of wild roses turns the milk to cream.
Tell your mother that you walked all night on velvet green.
And the long grass blows in the evening cool.
And August's rare delight may be April's fool.
But think not of that, my love, I'm tight against the seam.
And I'm growing up to meet you down on velvet green.

The next one I love because of the way it invokes my memories of growing up on the farm, the mysticysm and superstition that goes with the country, and because it ends on an image of bright days and fair winds, lasting eternaly, just like the remembered summers of my youth...

[Weathercock - Jethro Tull]
Good morning Weathercock: How did you fare last night?
Did the cold wind bite you, did you face up to the fright
When the leaves spin from October and whip around your tail?
Did you shake from the blast, did you shiver through the gale?

Give us direction; the best of goodwill,
Put us in touch with your fair winds.
Sing to us softly, hum evening's song.
Tell us what the blacksmith has done for you.

Do you simply reflect changes in the patterns of the sky,
Or is it true to say the weather heeds the twinkle in your eye?
Do you fight the rush of winter; do you hold snowflakes at bay?
Do you lift the dawn sun from the fields and help him on his way?

Good morning Weathercock: make this day bright.
Put us in touch with your fair winds.
Sing to us softly, hum evening's song.
Point the way to better days we can share with you.

And this little snippet I like simply because it breaks down the meaning of a well known phrase to its logical conclusion, and shows that, in its basic context, the saying makes little sense

[Shut Up - Madness]
I'm as honest as the day is long.
The longer the daylight, the less I do wrong

I love a number of lyrics. The first ones that come to mind (from memory) are:

"Don't say you're easy on me, cos you're about as easy as a NUCLEAR WAR"

Cities come and cities go, just like the old empires,
When all you do is change your clothes and call THAT versatile

...and two that I just love in their entirety

I hate the world today
You're so good to me
I know but I can't change
Tried to tell you
But you look at me like maybe
I'm an angel underneath
Innocent and sweet
Yesterday I cried
Must have been relieved to see
The softer side
I can understand how you'd be so confused
I don't envy you
I'm a little bit of everything
All rolled into one
Chorus:
I'm a bitch, I'm a lover
I'm a child, I'm a mother
I'm a sinner, I'm a saint
I do not feel ashamed
I'm your hell, I'm your dream
I'm nothing in between
You know you wouldn't want it any other way

So take me as I am
This may mean
You'll have to be a stronger man
Rest assured that
When I start to make you nervous
And I'm going to extremes
Tomorrow I will change
And today won't mean a thing

Chorus

Just when you think, you got me figured out
The season's already changing
I think it's cool, you do what you do
And don't try to save me

Chorus

I'm a bitch, I'm a tease
I'm a goddess on my knees
When you hurt, when you suffer
I'm your angel undercover
I've been numb, I'm revived
Can't say I'm not alive
You know I wouldn't want it any other way

Whenever she's feeling empty
Whenever she's feeling insecure
Whenever her face is frozen
Unable to fake it anymore
Her shadow is always with her
Her shadow will always keep her small
So frightened that he wont love her
She builds up a wall

Oh no, she knows where to hide in the dark
Oh no, she's nowhere to hide in the dark

She's a star

She's been in disguise forever
She's tried to disguise her stellar views
Much brighter than all this static
Now she's coming through

Oh no, she knows where to hide in the dark
Oh no, she's nowhere to hide in the dark

She's a star

Don't tell her to turn down,
Put on your shades if you can't see,
Don't tell her to turn down,
Turn up the flame.
She's a star

It's a long road
It's a great cause
It's a long road
Its a good call
You got it,
You got it,

SHE'S A STAR

I've refrained from posting the entire Alanis ' You oughta know', but by GOD do I feel every word she sings in that song?!

..and every time I drag my nails down someone else's back, I hope you feel it. Oh can you feel it?

It's not fair, to deny me, of the cross I bear that you gave to me

(note: Not 'the crosseyed bear that you gave to me' ;))

And are you thinking of me when you f**k her?

Sorry, I shall now leave before I take this thread over and RUIN it completely!! I just LOVE moooosic!

Love the rawness of this. Possibly means more to me as I was in a long distance relationship for 5 years!

Pixies - Cactus.

Sitting here wishing on a cement floor
Just wishing that I had just something you wore

I put it on when I grow lonely
Will you take off your dress and send it to me?

I miss your kissin' and I miss your head
And a letter in your writing doesn't mean you're not dead
Run outside in the desert heat
Make your dress all wet and send it to me

I miss your soup and I miss your bread
And a letter in your writing doesn't mean you're not dead
So spill your breakfast and drip your wine
Just wear that dress when you dine

Sitting here wishing on a cement floor
Just wishing that I had just something you wore

Bloody your hands on a cactus tree
Wipe it on your dress and send it to me

Sitting here wishing on a cement floor
Just wishing that I had just something you wore

Kitten - seconded! Good choices! And Berrrrrta!

Bill Withers...

Sometimes in our lives we all have pain
We all have sorrow
But if we are wise
We know that there's always tomorrow

Lean on me, when you're not strong
And I'll be your friend
I'll help you carry on
For it won't be long
'Til I'm gonna need
Somebody to lean on

Please swallow your pride
If I have things you need to borrow
For no one can fill those of your needs
That you don't let show

Lean on me, when you're not strong
And I'll be your friend
I'll help you carry on
For it won't be long
'Til I'm gonna need
Somebody to lean on

If there is a load you have to bear
That you can't carry
I'm right up the road
I'll share your load
If you just call me

So just call on me brother, when you need a hand
We all need somebody to lean on
I just might have a problem that you'd understand
We all need somebody to lean on

Lean on me when you're not strong
And I'll be your friend
I'll help you carry on
For it won't be long
Till I'm gonna need
Somebody to lean on

Lean on me...

Tis a beautiful song. Makes me smile :)

Stereophonics: Just Looking

I'm just looking, I'm not buying
I'm just looking, keeps me smiling

Very apt for a lot of my life :) Bit of a watcher!

Also...

Stereophonics - I Wouldn't Believe Your Radio:

If I had myself a flying giraffe, I would have it in a box with a window

Makes me giggle! Hehehehe! Stereophonics Is Yesterday, Tomorrow, Today also means a lot to me!

The Killers - All These Things That I've Done

I've got soul but I'm not a soldier

Dunno why just love that! Good choon!

Train - Drops of Jupiter

Now that she's back in the atmosphere
With drops of Jupiter in her hair, hey
She acts like summer and walks like rain
Reminds me that there's a time to change, hey
Since the return from her stay on the moon
She listens like spring and she talks like June, hey, hey

But tell me, did you sail across the sun?
Did you make it to the Milky Way
To see the lights all faded
And that heaven is overrated?

Tell me, did you fall for a shooting star?
One without a permanent scar
And then you missed me
While you were looking for yourself out there?

I love this song! Makes me belt out goodness!

Baz Luhrman - Sunscreen

Ladies and Gentlemen of the class of ’99
If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be
it. The long term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by
scientists whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable
than my own meandering
experience…I will dispense this advice now. Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth; oh nevermind; you will not
understand the power and beauty of your youth until they have faded.
But trust me, in 20 years you’ll look back at photos of yourself and
recall in a way you can’t grasp now how much possibility lay before
you and how fabulous you really looked….You’re not as fat as you
imagine. Don’t worry about the future; or worry, but know that worrying is as
effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing
bubblegum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that
never crossed your worried mind; the kind that blindside you at 4pm
on some idle Tuesday. Do one thing everyday that scares you Sing Don’t be reckless with other people’s hearts, don’t put up with
people who are reckless with yours. Floss Don’t waste your time on jealousy; sometimes you’re ahead, sometimes
you’re behind…the race is long, and in the end, it’s only with
yourself. Remember the compliments you receive, forget the insults; if you
succeed in doing this, tell me how. Keep your old love letters, throw away your old bank statements. Stretch Don’t feel guilty if you don’t know what you want to do with your
life…the most interesting people I know didn’t know at 22 what they
wanted to do with their lives, some of the most interesting 40 year
olds I know still don’t. Get plenty of calcium. Be kind to your knees, you’ll miss them when they’re gone. Maybe you’ll marry, maybe you won’t, maybe you’ll have children, maybe
you won’t, maybe you’ll divorce at 40, maybe you’ll dance the funky
chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary…what ever you do, don’t
congratulate yourself too much or berate yourself either – your
choices are half chance, so are everybody else’s. Enjoy your body,
use it every way you can…don’t be afraid of it, or what other people
think of it, it’s the greatest instrument you’ll ever
own.. Dance…even if you have nowhere to do it but in your own living room. Read the directions, even if you don’t follow them. Do NOT read beauty magazines, they will only make you feel ugly. Get to know your parents, you never know when they’ll be gone for
good. Be nice to your siblings; they are the best link to your past and the
people most likely to stick with you in the future. Understand that friends come and go,but for the precious few you
should hold on. Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and
lifestyle because the older you get, the more you need the people you
knew when you were young. Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard; live
in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft. Travel. Accept certain inalienable truths, prices will rise, politicians will
philander, you too will get old, and when you do you’ll fantasize
that when you were young prices were reasonable, politicians were
noble and children respected their elders. Respect your elders. Don’t expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you have a trust fund,
maybe you have a wealthy spouse; but you never know when either one
might run out. Don’t mess too much with your hair, or by the time you're 40, it will
look 85. Be careful whose advice you buy, but, be patient with those who
supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way of
fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the
ugly parts and recycling it for more than
it’s worth. But trust me on the sunscreen…

Simply the best song to listen to when all things are poop. Sensible man he is. Sensible!

I like it when lyrics are like poetry. Doesn't have to be much, like Dave Matthews' The Dreaming Tree:

Now progress takes away what forever took to find

Or Dire Straits classic Telegraph Road...

The other travellers came walking down the track
And they never went further, no, they never went back
Then came the churches, then came the schools
Then came the lawyers, then came the rules

She's A Star is brilliant, I listen to it a lot. 'Much brighter than all this static, now she's coming through' is just one of many evocative lyrics.

A favourite of mine is from the lesser known Oasis song 'Hello' (though not so lesser known for those of us that bought What's The Story when it came out and it was the first track on the album!).

'It's never gonna be the same, cos the years are falling by like the rain.'

It's a sad, simple and powerful simile and fits the song so well.

<3 that album!!

All you dreams are made, when you're chained to the mirror & the razor blade

An old friend sent me the CD single (remember them!?) of She's a Star. Said they heard it and the lyrics made them think of me. Loved it ever since :)

Had the same thing happen in high school with Invisible Touch from an ex. Don't think he was too impressed with being dumped ;D

I thought I fought for what was right, but in the end, my friend, 20/20 is hindsight

A great lyric from the FLC. We all fight for what we think is right, but there's no way of knowing how it will all turn out until you can look back on the outcome. Many have fought for an ideal that has turned sour, or has been judged later as evil, regressive or pointless.

Yeah, I cut off my foot to spite my leg :D

Lets pretend I'm attractive and then
You won't mind, you can twist for a while
It's the night, I can be who you like
And I'll quietly leave before it gets light ;D

No one laughs at God when their airplane starts to uncontrollably shake
No one's laughing at God when they see the one they love hand in hand with someone else and they hope that they're mistaken :)

But it's all right if you act like a turd
'Cause I like
Birds ;D

Amongst the vending machines and year-old magazines
In a place where we only say goodbye
It stung like a violent wind that our memories depend
On a faulty camera in our minds
But I knew that you were a truth
I would rather lose than to have never lain beside at all
And I looked around at all the eyes on the ground
As the TV entertained itself :'(

We adopt a brand new language, communicate through pursed lips,
and you try not to put on any sexy clothes or graces. :'(

I am the shadow on the moon at night
Filling your dreams to the brim with fright
:D

Always liked the lyrics to Child in Time by Deep Purple:

Sweet child in time, you'll see the line
Line that's drawn between Good and the Bad
See the blind man, shooting at the world
Bullets flying, taking toll
If you've been bad - Oh Lord I bet you have
And you've not been hit by flying lead
You'd better close your eyes, bow your head
Wait for the ricochet

The guitar solo on the extended version is fabulous as well, making this my favourite song of all time.

Don't laugh but I also liked the lyrics from Take That's song, Back for Good when it was in the charts - especially the line: In the twist of separation you excelled at being free I had just split up with the mother of my youngest daughter at the time and the lyrics seemed appropriate.

Made a wrong turn, once or twice
Dug my way out, blood and fire
Bad decisions, thats alright,
Welcome to my silly life

Mistreated, misplaced, misunderstood
Miss "no way its all good" it didn't slow me down
Mistaken, always second guessing, underestimated
Look im still around

Pretty pretty please, don't you ever ever feel
Like you're less than, f***in perfect
Pretty pretty please, if you ever ever feel
Like you're nothing, you're f***in perfect to me

You're so mean, when you talk about yourself
You were wrong
Change the voices in your head
Make them like you instead

Pink - f*cking perfect

I heard
That you're settled down
That you
Found a girl
And your
Married now

I heard
That your dreams came true
I guess she gave you things
I didn't give to you

Oh friend
Why you so shy
Ain't like you to hold back
Or hide from the light

I hate to turn up out of the blue uninvited
But I couldn't stay away I couldn't fight it
I hoped you'd see my face and be reminded
That for me
It isn't over

Nevermind
I'll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best
For you too
Don't forget me
I beg
I'll remember you still
Sometimes it lasts in love
But sometimes it hurts instead

Sometimes it lasts in love
But sometimes it hurts instead
Yeah

You know how the time flies
Only yesterday
It was the time of our lives
We were born and bred
In a summer haze
Bound by the surprise
Of our glory days

I hate to turn up out of the blue uninvited
But I couldn't stay away I couldn't fight it
I hoped you'd see my face and be reminded
That for me
It isn't over

Nevermind
I'll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best
For you too
Don't forget me
I beg
I'll remember you still
Sometimes it lasts in love
But sometimes it hurts instead

Nothing compares
No worries or cares
Regrets and mistakes
And memories made
Who would have known
How bittersweet
This would taste

Nevermind
I'll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best
For you too
Don't forget me
I beg
I'll remember you still
Sometimes it lasts in love
But sometimes it hurts instead

Nevermind
I'll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best
For you too
Don't forget me
I beg
I'll remember you still
Sometimes it lasts in love
But sometimes it hurts instead

Sometimes it lasts in love
But sometimes it hurts instead

Adele - Someone like you

All she needs in life
Is someone to treat her right
Follow her hearts desire
Thats what makes her rise inside

All shes praying for
Is somehow to feel secure
To know that shes beautiful

Sleep to Dream Her, beautiful song about unrequited love.

It seems so unnerving
Still somehow deserving
That she could hold my heart so tightly
And still not see me here

Oh, I sleep just to dream her
Beg the night just to see her
That my only love should be her
Just to lie in her arms

Reasons for Waiting - Jethro Tull

What a sight for my eyes
to see you in sleep.
Could it stop the sun rise
hearing you weep?
You're not seen, you're not heard
but I stand by my word.
Came a thousand miles
just to catch you while you're smiling

What a day for laughter
and walking at night.
Me following after, your hand holding tight.
And the memory stays clear with
the song that you hear.
If I can but make
the words awake the feeling.

What a reason for waiting
and dreaming of dreams.
So here's hoping you've faith
in impossible schemes,
that are born in the sigh of
the wind blowing by
while the dimming light brings the
end to a night of loving.

Con ti Partiro

Quando sono solo
Sogno all'orizzonte
E mancan le parole
Si lo so che non c'luce
In una stanza
Quando manca il sole
Se non ci sei tu con me, con me.

Su le finestre
Mostra a tutti il mio cuore
Che hai acceso
Chiudi dentro me
La luce che
Hai incontrato per strada

Time to say goodbye
Paesi che non ho mai
Veduto e vissuto con te
Adesso si li vivro.
Con te partiro
Su navi per mari
Che io lo so
No no non esistono piu
It's time to say goodbye.

Quando sei lontana
Sogno all'orizzonte
E mancan le parole
E io si lo so
Che sei con me con me
Tu mia luna tu sei qui con me
Mio sole tu sei qui con me
Con me con me con me

Time to say goodbye
Paesi che non ho mai
Veduto e vissuto con te
Adesso si li vivro.
Con te partiro
Su navi per mari
Che io lo so
No no non esistono piu
Con te io li rivivro.
Con te partiro
Su navi per mari
Che io lo so
No no non esistono piu
Con te io li rivivro.
Con te partiro
Io con te.

Makes me a little soppy inside :)

Some of my favourite Shed Seven lyrics:

Bully Boy

There's no point in hiding
The hate you confide in
The pain that you call your own.
There's no point in shying
From fists that are flying
The boy is on his own.

Around Your House

I'm gonna drop a bomb
On your house today
So get out of the way
And I'll take your car
And never bring it back
But please paint the door
I don't like green anymore.

Cry For Help

Did i ever tell you that you shook me to the bone
When all you did was be yourself?

Devil in Your Shoes

You keep your mouth in your backside baby
And you're using it daily
In my defense you wear the devil in your shoes lately
And you're walking all over the times when I've known you and smiled.

Couple from Journey away from the obvious commercial wave of Don't Stop Believing(which Glee has taken from the good people of this world).

"I'm proud of all the blessings you have given me. Mountains we have climbed to get this far." - After All These Years

"Being apart ain't easy on this love affair, two strangers learn to fall in love again. I get the joy of re-discovering you. Oh girl, you stand by me. I'm forever yours, faithfully" - Faithfully.

Wrestling soundtrack - "When It comes crashing down and it hurts inside, you gotta take the stand it don't help to hide. You hurt my friends then you hurt my pride, I've gotta be a man, I can't let it slide" - Real American(Hulk Hogan).

Transformers Movie(1986)had an unbelieveable soundtrack and some of my favourite songs are from this and the new Michael Bay films.

"You got the touch, you got the power. After all thats said and done, you never walked you never run, you're a winner. Got the moves, you know the street. Break the rules, take the heat, you're nobodys fool. You're at your best when the going gets rough, you've been pushed to the edge but its never enough" - The Touch.

"And your voice was all I heard that I get what I deserve
So give me reason to prove me wrong, to wash this memory clean
Let the floods cross the distance in your eyes
Give me reason to fill this hole, connect the space between
Let it be enough to reach the truth that lies across this new divide" - New Divide. THIS gives me goosebumps when I'm warming up.

I was just talking to someone about this song... it reminds me of "good times TM"

Safety Dance by Men Without Hats

We can dance if we want to
We can leave your friends behind
Because your friends don't dance and if they don't dance
Well they ain't no friends of mine
I say, we can go where we want to
A place where they will never find
And we can act like we come from out of this world
Leave the real one far behind
And we can dance

We can go when we want to
The night is young and so am I
And we can dress real neat from our hats to our feet
And surprise 'em with the victory cry
Say, we can act if want to
If we don't nobody will
And you can act real rude and totally removed
And I can act like an imbecile

I say, we can dance, we can dance
Everything out of control
We can dance, we can dance
We're doing it wall to wall
We can dance, we can dance
Everybody look at your hands
We can dance, we can dance
Everybody takin' the cha-a-a-ance

Safety dance
Is it safe to dance
Is it safe to dance

We can dance if we want to
We've got all your life and mine
As long as we abuse it, never gonna lose it
Everything'll work out fine
I say, we can dance if we want to
We can leave your friends behind
Because your friends don't dance and if they don't dance
Well they ain't no friends of mine
