View Full Version : Sacrifices, diets and lent: oh my!

With Lent starting at midnight, it seems a lot of people are aiming to give up various treats, consumables or habits - religiously driven or not!

I do not pursue the Lent period with religious intent, but as a motivational exercise that ultimately ends in a great big warm cuddle of self-satisfaction :D ... if completed!

This year I think I'm going to 'give up' online social-networking; no facebook, no forums, no twitter!

I think this will be suprisingly difficult considering the vast number of interactions that take place across these sites, but I also think it will be really interesting to see how much of a timesink they really can be otherwise!

Lent in 2011 will start on Wednesday, the 9th of March and will continue for 46 days until Saturday, the 23rd of April

So will anybody else be trying to go without anything for Lent this year? :)

So this is you signing off tonight then? :p

I won't be giving up anything for Lent but good luck to those who are trying to stick to it.

Do bear in mind Lent doesn't include Sundays, so you can use social media once a week :D

Oh I never knew that!

In that case, sorry, the torrents of spammy posts will continue - but once a week! ;D

Have fun whilst you're away dude :D

Don't think there's anything I need to give up. Maybe farting?

I think we all remember what happened when Homer wasn't there to vent the gas from the nuclear reactor Desmo.

Cheers dude - I'll be so busy with commitments that I'm sure it'll fly by anyway!

Don't think of it as something you need to give up, but more of a luxury you could try to go without... Do you consider your farts a luxury? ;D

I'm sure Sinead doesn't! :D

Hmmmmm -only because Sunday was a day of rest & abstinence so you couldn't abstain on a day you weren't allowed to do it anyway. You should really count it or it's not really in the spirit of sacrifice.

I would like to do Lent. I usually give up sugar BUT I haven't had my sugar fix tonight with the pancakes so am not sure that is possible... I could try...

1) No sugar in my tea

and 2) like Jingo I was going to give up the social networking... during evenings.. (meaning restricting to work hours) but am not sure if I will be able to do this.

3) Alcohol. Damn I have to give up alcohol till my birthday?! Not sure if thats right.

Will think of something else...

I know its not meant to be easy...!

Giving up stuff is hard :(

I'm giving up nothing. Life's too short to put yourself through forced abstinence. I don't even see much of a motivational edge to it. If I smoked, or did drugs or something and needed to give that up, Lent only lasts for 40 days, so you are enduring a set period without your fix, knowing that on the first day after Lent you can smoke your face off and still congratulate yourself for "doing" Lent.

Lent itself should be a fast, but if you ask me that's just religious nonsense invented to keep the peasants from rioting over the lack of food at the far end of the winter months. It's supposed to bring you closer to God, well, yes, barely eating for 40 days will bring a lot of people closer to God, especially the elderly and the sick.

Giving up is for life, not just for Lent...

Saw an interesting "giving up for lent" come up on twitter. She's giving up gossip, going to absolutely do her hardest to avoid it, and not gossip herself. It's something she despises yet often finds herself unintentionally involved in it.
That's the kind of thing that is a better use of Lent than just settling for giving up Chocolate or whatever.

Another alternative is to specifically pick up something positive. That's what my old church promoted, and usually saw great dividends in return from it. 40 days is a good period of time to form a new, positive, habit.

Saw an amusing headline in the Times today: "Hundreds give up Anglican Church at Lent"

It's a story about 600+ Anglicans, including 20 priests, who will be starting Lent today by joining the Catholic Church.

Not so much giving something up for Lent but giving something up at Lent :D

Well the social networking thing didn't really happen :p

First thing I did when I woke up was check FB app.

No tea in sugar seems ok... so far.... although there is still a spoon in my cup regardless. :o

It's surprising how quickly you get used to it. I went from 2 spoons of sugar in a cup of tea to zero within a few weeks and now I can't stand any sugar at all in tea - even the slightest amount makes me gag.

Didn't really help when the girl opposite said - well basically you are giving up tea then?

I was the same as Stan - I gave up over a few weeks (used to have 2 spoons) when I was in my early 20's and now can't BEAR sweet tea.

Jingo - don't reply if you're a rent boy. ;)

I think (better late than never) I'm going to start doing something rather than giving something up. Like making sure I write every day for 30 mins or walk for 30 mins on top of the usual doggie walk. Won't just be for Lent though, although that will be the kick start :)

I heard him too. I see he's not denying it.

I often wonder if it was Jingo on the grassy knoll. Surely he'd deny *that* though.

Teh internets it returns!

Where has the time gone? It seems only yesterday I was leaving with teh fear (yes b3ta fans) and time has winged by with little more than a few pangs of missingnessness for you lovely BD people!

I think 'giving up' forums, facebook and twitter was not too difficult a challenge really, more inconvenient than anything! But it allowed for more phone calls from friends and frankly one hell of a lot more 'free' time!

Glad to see whilst the cat was away the BD mice (and ratties) played and I have drank much lmaonade reading these cheeky responses...

Jingo - don't reply if you're a rent boy. ;)

*silently salutes*

You too Faysh ;)

Even at wedding weekends.... *plans*

Jingo smells! I know because he told me!

Curse you! May only the smallest wedges of cheese hit your platter!

(and yes he does smell - he told me too)

Right! As punishment you will have to dance with me a lot at the wedding *prepares the embaressment catalogue*

Assassination? I sure hope so as "grassy knoll" sounds like typical BD smut euphanism material...

Glad to be back and looking forward to catching up on the reams and reams of threads and posts :)

Yours sincerly,

The big doubley smelly raving bumchuff rentboy assassin :) ;D
