Let the jokes commence :D

Right, the stereo on the Mondeo is crap, I mean really really crap. This is the first car that I've really thought about upgrading the sound. Essentially at the moment there is no mid or high out of the stock speakers and it's driving me bonkers.

What I am after is some kind of ideas on possible upgrade paths. Not interested in a big ass sub, but I could be open to a small sub which complements the sound. I am mainly after a better sound range, as at present it is all distorted low end :(

Ideally would keeping the stock HU and getting some better door speakers do? If so, what are considered good speakers for car audio?

edit:- if not then a smart double din stereo and some kind of amp solution?

Unless you want serious power you don't need an amp, if it is the speakers that are rubbish the stock head unit may well be OK with some new speakers and decent ones will give you enough pass without making you sound like a 17yo Corsa driver.

Get some mid range Pioneer or Kenwood upgrade speakers which should just bolt in, if you aren't happy then £150 Pioneer or Kenwood head unit will have enough umph to push them and give you a pretty good sound than unless you spend £1000+ you won't be able to tell the difference to.

Thats all a bit of an exaggeration but £100-200 should solve your problem :)

Thanks, less than I thought to sort it all :) I'll go speakers first and see if that sorts it.

As Matt has said above, change the speakers out first as they can make a huge difference even on a decidedly average head unit. If you're still not happy then I think you'll be amazed at what you can pick up for a couple of hundred in Halfords. No need to go double din either (unless you really want to) as you can buy an adaptor to covert double din to single din with a little cubby hole.
