Salvage or Scrap..

Hi All,

I've got some "old" components that were from the computer I built in 2007/8 that died and after some diagnosis and a few RMA's I gave up on deciding what was wrong and it got put in a box to gather dust until I had more time and effort..

Well now it's pretty old stuff and I have no idea whether it's worth salvaging or not..

I have:

Motherboard: Abit IP35 Pro (RMA replacement)
CPU: Intel E6300 (potentially dead)
RAM: 2Gb Crucial 10yr Anniversary ram (Potentially thrown away by a friend)
Gfx: 512Mb HIS Ati 1950Pro
HDD: Various drives, would buy new anyway
PSU: Corsair 520W Modular

All going into a very nice Lian-Li case that is well worth keeping :p
I think I have the optical drives I need to get things going.

Could I get a relatively decent computer going with the motherboard and graphics I've got up there? Or would I definitely be buying more than I'm keeping?

And if scrapping, would I be likely to get anything for the motherboard/graphics/Psu/case?

Depends what you want to do with it. The graphics card is old so won't be up to much for modern games, but old/flash games and general use (web/email/word etc.) will run absolutely fine.

Depends what you'd be intending using it for - gaming, no probably not, unless you're happy running things on low res and settings. General browsing duties it'd be fine for, photo editing you'd be ok with, it would be no rocketship but with 4GB of RAM stuck in it it'd plow through happily enough.

Stick XBMC on it and use it as a mediabox. Should work pretty well.

Get blu-ray drive and it could be a htpc.
Would need to double check gfx card is unto the task.

So considering I do all my gaming and media duties on my PS3/NAS and my computer requirements on my Macbook Pro it's worth scrapping then :p

Unless I could run an HTPC <400W total then using my PS3 and a NAS works out cheaper to run.

Should have just sold it all at the time when it was worth a bit of money!

Lian-Li cases are lovely, my old one ended up getting given to my dad (suprisingly they still seem to fetch a reasonable price on the bay). I have a Silverstone now instead. I think for me with cases it's all a bit 'less is more'.

you can scrap the lot to me if you like... would be a nice step up from my kit of a E2140 and a Gigabyte GA-G33M-DS2R motherboard same era but higher spec.

You're looking at about 150W for that. Plus any hard disks or other stuff you add, but still easily half your 400W limit.
