My girlfriend likes to dye her hair. It's her birthday soon and I wanted to get her some funky colours and an easy hair dye kit. She's borrowed some bowl and application tool from a friend a couple of times, but I dunno what that was.

Is there some sort of shampoo or gun or magic pixie dust that I can buy to make her hair go super cool whenever she wants?

For example;

She likes that colour, reds and purples etc. I've tried looking on Boots site but they only seem to have generic blonde, brunette, etc.

Sam's department! :D

I only ever have salon dyes...expensive & not as varied colours.

I've used Stargazer and Manic Panic among other brands. They do wash out of your hair very quickly though as they're stains rather than dyes.

Fudge are apparently better quality and more expensive, but again, watch out for the rain for a few washes after you've done it! It can run!

Am currently quite blonde, and am contemplating going pink for a Breast Cancer charity event I'm performing at in a few weeks. I'll look like a candyfloss!

I think she may have used something similar as I remember seeing pink tinted clothes. But I'm sure she's had a more permanent one that's lasted a couple of months.

That's tempting for chest hair but I think I'll pass ;)

Possibly Fudge that I mentioned then:

Brights don't last long. You need to keep re-doing them.

Schwarzkopf LIVE (http://www.livecolor.com/products/) do some funky purples and reds. The shade selector gives you an idea of what the result will be like. I've not used it on my own hair, but I have done a friends hair with it and it came out really nice and lasted pretty well.

For the process itself I use a bowl and applicator brush (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Metallix-Non-Slip-Tint-Bowl-Brush/dp/B00533AWSY/ref=sr_1_5?s=beauty&ie=UTF8&qid=1313600279&sr=1-5) when dying peoples hair, allows you to be a bit more precise when you are going for a strong colour.

I was just reading the Schwarzkopf LIVE site and found this;

You should not colour your hair if you have or have had a tattoo, especially a temporary tattoo (temptoo). Even if you did not experience any reaction at the time, your body may have become sensitised as a result of the inks that were tattooed into your skin. This could result in an allergic reaction when later colouring your hair. For safe hair colouring you should therefore never take any risks. Tattoos can increase your allergy risk, even years after they have been applied.

Really? My girlfriend has 2 tattoos and hasn't had issues. We've got some temp ones too.

I'm thinking of getting the bowl & brush for her birthday and a note saying "Hair dye credit" as I think this is complex enough for me to buy the wrong thing :) I'm liking the purple Schawrzkopf one and the range in the Manic Panic ones.

I think they have to tell you that sort of thing just in case. Most people I know with tats have dyed/do dye their hair. You can always do a patch test a couple of days before hand if you want to be super careful. In fact the friend I had that I used that very dye on had 3 tats.

Personally recommend Special Effects - colours last a good while and they come out the same colours as the pics :) I have Vigin Rose atm.

My last dye was one of the Live ones - it was called Ultra Violet. My hair never holds dyes but it lasted about 5 weeks which was brilliant for me. There should be pics of it on my fb somewhere.

I've dyed my hair again since I had my tat, and it is the 'one in a million' chance, but it is pretty awful when people have a reaction. Do a patch test if unsure, but in most cases, you'll be fine. Whichever one Kelly used is very good, it's very bright in her hair and she's got very thick, dark hair as you know, so it will be harder to colour & keep nice. If it works on Kelly's hair, I think it'll work well on Sams :)

I would definitely get her tools, rather than the colour as she is very individual, but if you're determined to go for colour, knowing her, I'd say bright violet or pink :)

PS...or maybe BLOO!?

Will have to try there come payday then :D
Tried dying my hair blue in the Winter but the results were a bit rubbish/non-existent and I fancy trying again.

Yeah I think you're right. I'll get the tools and offer to pay for a new colour. She'll look ace with any :) She had pink earlier this year, I think red 2 years ago and maybe purple last year. I liked purple as it reminded me of anime characters :D

Also...another thought if you are after some 'tools' to get, a black/very dark towel or two so you don't end up with multi-colour rainbow bright towels :D

Heh. I think she'd quite like a rainbow towel :)

that's not a good kind of rainbow towel though. Hair dye tends to look a bit like poo when it dries :/

Ah. That's probably not a great look for a towel.
