Whilst I'm not a fan of the direction that Apple have ended up taking there is no doubt that in the last 10 years Apple have released some world changing products and I've owned quite a few of them.
I don't think I'll ever forget my wonder at the first Apple product I bought, a 4GB iPod Mini and the awe of the passengers around me on a flight to Toronto when I showed it to them 2 weeks after it was launched. People were genuinely astounded that such a small device could hold 20 CDs.
Got my first mac in around 1991.
RIP Steve, gone far too soon. Inspirational man and reminder thst sometimes life can be far too short, so get out there and get what you want from it.

RIP Mr Jobs as 56 is really no age to die.

Think different.
RIP Mr Jobs as 56 is really no age to die.
Despite not being an Apple fan I agree with this ^
RIP SJ.

Apple certainly is a unique company... apparently just been informed he started up Pixar too! I never knew that! Genius!
I really like the products and even though it can be a bit cheesey american at times... the ethos of his company Apple is phenomenal. Unlike any other retailer in the world.
Shame to see him go at such a young age.
RIP Mister Jones.

Kitten woke me up this morning with the news :( So very sad.
A truely inspirational man who will be greatly missed.
just been informed he started up Pixar too! I never knew that! Genius!
Yup. He got kicked out of Apple and created NeXT and later helped setup Pixar. I've heard that when he returned to Apple in the late 90's they had about 30 days left to live. He took Apple from the brink of death to the most valuable company in America with something like $76 billion in petty cash.
He was such a perfectionist, like insane levels of perfectionism.
Google’s vice president of engineering Vic Gundotra recalled on Google+ a particular Sunday in January 2008 when Apple’s boss asked him to call his home. The reason? The Google logo on the iPhone:
So Vic, we have an urgent issue, one that I need addressed right away. I’ve already assigned someone from my team to help you, and I hope you can fix this tomorrow. I’ve been looking at the Google logo on the iPhone and I’m not happy with the icon. The second O in Google doesn’t have the right yellow gradient. It’s just wrong and I’m going to have Greg fix it tomorrow. Is that okay with you?
Love that :)
If you haven't seen his graduation speech it's well worth watching. He was an amazing person.

You have George Lucas to thank for Pixar. Was a chunk of Lucasfilm.
RIP Mister Jones.
Whos Mr Jones? lol

Whos Mr Jones? lol
Ah, Steve Jones, the slimy Welsh man-tart from T4. Unfortunately he lives on.
Jobs was an innovator and a marketing powerhouse. I truly hope Apple keep up the same level of gusto in future products and promotions, in the appropriate spirit.
Rest in peace.
And Pheebs works at Apple! :p
It is sad news indeed. An innovator, good man, horrid disease (my grandfather died of the same illness) and brought a new way to look and use technology. Definitely a sad time for the IT industry. Let us not forget Pixar either.

Wonder if the book will be pushed back later to include a new chapter?
Wonder if the book will be pushed back later to include a new chapter?
Nope. There's already a chapter in there detailing his departure from Apple. I'm guessing they've probably just added his death date and hit print. It was originally slated for 2012 and brought forward to Nov. Wonder if they knew.
He must have known at that point. In his graduation speech he talks about getting his affairs in order last time he was ill. (I think) He must have known so it will be interesting to read that section.

According to a person familiar with the matter, Isaacson last interviewed Jobs four weeks ago, right before, and right after he stepped down from his post as the CEO of Apple.
Jobs indicated at that time that he knew he was going to die soon. The scene will appear at the end of the book.
Explains why the 4s event was so quiet. Each of the guys up on stage must have known what was about to happen.
Too soon?

Sometimes my brain goes kaputt. It's too much work that's done it!
Mister Jobs! JOBS!
I am rubbish!
Glad I didn't get the tshirt saying "I am steve JOBs" for my interview now... it would be massively frowned upon now.
Believe there's tributes outside stores now - am having to head up to one in a moment so will see what's going on. Greenpeace have even paid their respect... looks like he's managed to capture the minds, imaginations and hearts of the world. Top man.

Can't imagine how hard that event must have been for Tim Cook. His first post Steve event and I expect he probably knew that Steve was about to go. Damn.
I must admit that I'm really upset. While I've only been a Mac user for about 7 years or so I've been a follower of Apple for years. Customizing Windows to look like OSX etc. I remember seeing the "Think different." advert and feeling proud of being an outsider, a geek, a bit odd. I remember playing with Mac's both System 8 and OSX and just feeling like it's something I should be using.
And here I am in 2011, part of that big community that Steve created. An oddball, a perfectionist, someone who doesn't just settle for an app that does a job that desires the app to be beautifully designed. I put that same belief into my photography.
Someone said that they're not worried about Apple because the company is filled with those sort of people. That's Steve's legacy.
Too soon?
Yes.

Not in the slightest. There's quite a few out there already.

I said to Matt this morning I thought that would happen. They knew he was going, and they'll have been ready for it.
Yes
Agreed. It's not even a decent 'shop. Clearly not done on a Mac!
The speech he did at Stanford University that seems to be on the news a lot tonight, is truly inspiring stuff.
I wouldn't be doing the job I'm doing now if it weren't for him and I'm immensely grateful for his endeavours.
Regardless of any opinions of his work, business practices etc, it's someone's Dad, Husband, Uncle and so forth, thus a great shame.
Too soon?
Yes. And it isn't even funny anyway.

I remember watching Steve's commencement speech earlier this year and just being wow'd. He was a real innovator and extremely good, if not the best, public speaker that I've seen.
Too soon?
Yes. Even by my low standards.
I find it sad in a way that a man, who as great as he was, when you really boil it down was a shrewd business man whose greatness was selling consumer technology for incredible profit to amass his own personal fortune, is revered to such an extent, yet a Nobel prize winning medical researcher who died a week previous (also of pancreatic cancer) having spent his life working to cure such disease gets barely a passing mention in the news and I would bet 9/10 people wouldn't even know his name if you asked them.
Somewhere along the line I can't help but feel society has got it's priorities mixed up. I will be the first to admit the massive massive amount of coverage this particular passing is getting leaves a somewhat bad taste in my mouth.
Still, RIP Steve (and Ralph), nobody deserves to go in such a manner.

Ralph Steinman........and no I didn't google it. :p
Does help that I'm a news junkie who reads various news sites and has rolling news in the background while working every day though!
I agree with you that too many people and events get overlooked by the mainstream news. Particularly in a world of 24hr rolling news, some stations could really do with not repeating the same few stories over and over again. All that time to devote to so many other stories and they never do.

It's far cheaper to repeat content than keep producing original content :-/
 I guess if I had to ask, it should have dawned on me...
And I agree with divine. He was a shrewd businessman. Nothing more, nothing less. He sold communications devices to people. He kept coming out with new toys for people to pay an exorbitant amount for when the packaging wasn't even cold to the touch on their current useless toys. But people kept buying into the hype that the newest and greatest iPhone just HAD to be had the minute it hit the shelves. Steve Jobs was a remarkable master of marketing, but he was no Pope Benedict.
My thoughts are with his family. I know pretty much exactly what they're going through as I lost my mum to ovarian cancer at 58.
Who said he was Pope Benedict or a deity? Not me. As far as I am concerned he was dedicated to his work, yes, and he made millions. He also inspired millions, he created millions of jobs and really made people think differently and believe in their ideas. He has inspired a whole generation and I am sure we will reap the benefits of this in the future. That alone in a culture seemingly made up of vacuous wannabees, shagging sports stars, drugged up musicians, bent politicians and arrogant film stars ~ who appear to be the inspiration for a generation of 'look at me' idiots, MUST be worth celebrating and respecting the guy for, regardless of what people think of his products or marketing strategies.
Remember, I have used apple products since the early 90s so am not some rabid ipod fangirl (bear in mind a lot of the hero worship of apple comes from the huge amount of **** original apple fans took fron 'other' computer users for twenty odd years ~ I can personally vouch for that as a female in IT). He brought style and elegance to function and he made the world a brighter and nicer place for me, and allowed me top have a bit of individuality around my mundane, daily chores. He was also partly responsible for me hooking up with Leo (not directly :p) & for those reasons I will mourn him immensely.
I'm sorry about your Mum x
If you watch the graduation speech he wasn't just a businessman. To say that's all he was implies you have no idea of the man. He was a man who understood design, technology, the importance of being creative and pushing boundaries.
Without Steve there'd be no Adobe so no Photoshop so where would digital photography be today? Who knows what Pixar would have become without his investment, so no wonderful movies like Toy Story or Up. Where would MS have got its *ahem* inspiration from? ;)
I don't think I've read anything in the past 24 hours that discussed Steve's ability to rake in millions from selling overpriced consumer products. That's not the man people remember.

Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.
I'm glad Steve wasn't Pope Benedict. That guy's clearly a Sith.

I stood & applauded.
I'm not connected to the chap or Apple in any way but still think that 56 is No age to die, That's only ten years older than me for ***** sake. :(
R.I.P Apple Dude. :)
From what has surfaced over the years, working for SJ in an R&D role was not a nice experience - lots of secrecy and lots of cloak and dagger (including planting false rumours to try to catch anyone tempted to let slip). I can understand why they'd want to prevent industrial espionage, but nonetheless it was clearly taken to extreme degrees (including bolting hardware to desks to prevent anyone even picking it up). Even external suppliers had to do it 'the Apple way, or not at all'.
Personal character assassination over, he clearly had a shrewd head for design and business, and the willingness to dare to do what others would not, and the turn-around from failing Dot-com relic to corporate heavyweight is nothing short of astounding.
It was pretty clear from the Keynote that something was up. Now we know what that something was. RIP Steve Jobs.

Bunch of lunatics tbh.

In fairness if the WBC were protesting against the way I'd lived my life then I'd almost take it as a validation of what I'd been doing, not quite the enemy of my enemy is my friend approach but generally speaking if I'm on the opposite side of the fence to them I'm probably not going too far wrong...
His funeral took place Friday.
Indeed it did. If the WBC missed it then I won't lose a millisecond of sleep over it. I just wish people would see them for the trolls they are and then we could all deny them the attention they seek.

Article was from friday, tweet was from thursday.
No news on whether they actually did picket though.
Yeah, saw the tweet on twitter on Thursday morning. They didn't, they said if it was a private service, they wouldn't, but would if it was a public memorial. Basically, they couldn't get people there in time, if you ask me.
And since it was private, the location will have been kept secret anyway due to the high likelihood uninvited guests would otherwise have turned up. As we all know, Apple are experts at secret so the only way they could have done it would be to blanket all the funeral homes in the county. And thankfully there aren't enough of them to do that.

Unless you are an engineer in a well known cocktail bar :p
I'm sure they can find a few more SFPD officers who won't mind a new iPhone. :p
Probably the wrong thread to be continuing the subject, but if the following is true it actually makes the actions of the WBC more deplorable than simple delusion:

Employees are having a day on the 19th to remember him - Pheebs...drinks are on Steve! ;)
Suggests that's only at HQ (Cupertino), though I expect shops will do something.
Just been kind of shown stuff about Foxconn.
Not sure how to react.

Yes, people have died, committed suicide, had their health ruined by the substances they used to use to clean screens, and so on. But then the Chinese don't care much for labour laws, so there are very few of them. I'm more worried by the number of cases you don't hear about involving other companies than the ones you do involving Apple - at least they are motivated to try to do something about it.
Probably time to close this thread?
Will leave this thread open to discuss the passing of Steve Jobs, but can we please start a new thread discussing other issues if needed :)
