Everything I have is black (current iPhone/iPad, as well as blackberry, tv, xbox..... etc) so I just really wanted a change - you can only take so much of a colour ;D

I'm looking forward to having a play with Leo's *fnar* but I'm happy with the S2. Was expecting to be horribly jealous when it came out but other than the Siri stuff (which I probably wouldn't use anyway), there was nothing *wow* in the new design for me.

Hope y'all have fun with it :D

I'm quietly relieved that it doesn't seem to be a big upgrade this time round.

As my work depends on it, I was worried that if the leap from the iPhone 4 to the new one was a big one, I'd have to upgrade. Reckon the speed difference will be rather nice though! Swapping between my iPhone 4 and iPad 2 really brings out the difference between the processors and I'm an impatient sod :p

There is a huuuuge list of commands for it, and what I really love is how you don't have to say an exact phrase to do what you want. I just can't wait to tell my phone to "Text Dad saying I'm going to be late" ;D

People are arguing that it'll never get used, but for someone like me who walks everywhere this will be great - even better with the microphone headset :)

This is just an example list of commands you can use:
You can take a look at some example Siri phrases below:

I'd be very interested to hear peoples thoughts who have upgraded from the 4 & 3Gs. Personally have no interest as I'm an Android whore but none of my friends who have a 4 are interested as the 4 does everything they want and even my friend with a 3Gs will be waiting and playing with the new iOS first as her 3Gs does everything she needs it to, there's simply not enough new stuff to tempt her.

I have >3,000 photos on mine so that always went slow, when browsing through my Spotify lists of >1,000 tracks, etc. I noticed the camera also has been taking longer and longer to start from the homescreen.

I've just upgraded to the iOS 5 GM release and it looks like a few features might only be on the 4s (like the share my location thing)

I've got the iPhone 4, and as much as Siri looks very cool (and definitely something I'd use whenever I'm walking to/from work every day), I don't think it'll be worth upgrading to the 4s. Assuming the iPhone 5 is released next summer (as I suspect), I'll wait for that as my contract is up then anyway so I should be able to get it fairly cheap. Siri does look seriously cool though.

Toby
09-10-2011, 17:41
Don't think there's enough there to tempt iPhone 4 users to upgrade really, unless you can do it for minimal cost.

This will be my first iPhone. Had an HTC Desire for 18 months now and, whilst it's a good phone most of the time, there are far too many little problems which have annoyed me immensely. Add in the fact that the Android Market is markedly inferior to the App Store in quality and content and the fact that iOS is just "slicker" in operation and I've finally given in :)

Also taken the opportunity to switch networks as I'm sick of Orange's coverage.

Went with Vodafone on a 12-month contract. £319 up front but £59 rebate in November so £260 effectively, then £36 a month for 300 mins, unlimited texts and 500MB internet which is perfect for me. Works out at £692 total. If I deduct the £499 that buying the phone outright would have cost me then it works out at just over £16 a month for the service which is what I'd pay for a Vodafone or O2 sim-only contract anyway so pretty good deal I reckon.

I'm not going to get sucked into the endless cycle of replacement phones, planning to keep the 4S for quite a while so, after the 12 months I'll just switch to a cheap sim-only deal.

I might still be tempted back to white, though my iPad2 is black so I'd be co-ordinated if I didn't. Either way it'll be going in a capsule case like my 3GS did, so it won't matter anyway.

Going to be a big bump for me, though it's been six months since I lost the 3GS so my memory of that has been wiped by the overwhelming crapness that is the WinMo phone I've been using since (backed up by an equally old Blackberry that is also equally crap, and dying).

Picking up the iPad2 is comparitive sheer bliss, but it doesn't have 3G so it's a bit limited when out and about (it'll be tethered once the iPhone turns up).

But I'm expecting it to be smoother switching between apps, less likely to have to reload pages when switching around in Safari (due to the extra RAM), less checkerboarding in Safari (faster CPU), and so on.

Siri can go do one. Unless I get over my innate distaste for speaking to computers anyway (hate doing it down the phone too).

Cases do more damage than good when it comes to the iPhone. Had mine in a bumper for 6 months and the metal around the edge has gone all scratched where bits of dirt have got between it and the case and rubbed :(

Screen is perfect after 15 months without any form of protection :)

I'll be getting a SwitchEasy case for mine, like I did with the 3GS. One version of those come with a dock adapter that fits anything with a universal dock (of which I have two). My portable speakers won't take a cased phone, but I have a cable to deal with that problem.

I don't care so much about scratches - they're just cosmetic. However, breaking the glass is a different matter and the insurance excess for that is now £100. I'd rather pay £20 for the case.

I've never really been that much of a fan of White as a colour for anything, cars, appliances etc. It shows up the dirt so easily, often discolours in nasty ways over time, usually heading towards yellowish off-white. Given how often it's ending up in peoples hands is it really a good idea to have a white phone? Not convinced... would rather go with black/grey.

kaiowas
10-10-2011, 11:24
I've always kept my 3Gs in a sock type case. Protects it well enough from keys and coins in my pocket and it's no trouble to whip it out when I need to. Only slight gripe is that I keep the bottom of the phone at the open end (so that the speakers aren't covered up and muffled) which has meant the the dock connector gets full of pocket fluff.

Kitten
10-10-2011, 12:14
I've had a white 3gs case for 2.5 years and it looks like new. Doesnt seem to get dirty. There doesn't seem to be any discolouration or yellowing on it & it's had a lot of use :)

What is wrong with white? :'(

Looks cheap, plasticy and nasty.

iPads in White due to less reflection on bezel and less heat absorption in summer.

However that lack of reflection, makes it look like plastic. It really doesn't look nice at all, where the black iPhone looks sweet.

You might find stock of some models if you hunt for them, but only at Apple stores for now at least. 16GB white and 64GB black appear to be in short supply as they sold out first at my store. Possibly 64GB white too. There appeared to be a few dozen 16GB black and 32GB either colour left with the queue almost gone.

778 people in Regent Street. Crazy. Must have been about 150 at my store. They were letting us in in batches of five every few minutes, and cheering people on the way out. Naturally I found the staff member that'd been most vocal and high-fived her. Had to be done! ;D

Alas the stuff that relies on business searching (restaurants etc) doesn't work outside the US atm.

A lot of people are quite aggrieved at this as most of the demos of Siri included a lot of this type of thing yet there wasn't any mention of it not working outside the US.

It's coming in 2012 for us. Sooner the better if you ask me.

iTunes is now beachballing a lot for me. I know that having 6,000 songs in the library will take some organising, but this is an early 2006 model Mac Mini with only 1GB RAM, so I suspect the hardware is showing its age now.

No, I shall not be buying a new Mac . Since all this one does now is manage my iTunes library and a bit of messing about, it'd be a waste, though I'll think about it once Snow Leopard becomes unsupported or the hardware dies. :)

Beware wi-fi sync (and not just on the 4S). My 4S has been constantly trying to complete a wi-fi sync for several hours today, and it only stops trying when you stop it, or something else intervenes (like a flat battery).

I'm not sure whether iCloud would have the same issue, but it might, so keep an eye on that too.

It's coming in 2012 for us. Sooner the better if you ask me.

I'm actually not minding talking to Siri as much as I thought I would be. I'd prefer a choice of Siri voices though (male voices don't work so well with small speakers).

Same here.

The real test of whether it's a gimmick or a useful tool is whether it's actually easier to do things with Siri and it is. Saying something like "Remind me to call Dave at 3pm tomorrow" is a lot easier than creating the reminder manually.

I also love the way it can find music by artist or title, doing a very good job of recognising band names which aren't actually English words. I'm actually finding it a shame that I don't use the phone for music but it's a good trick for down the pub so I've put some on there anyway just so I can show it off :)

I had no trouble with wifi sync on the 3GS throughout the entire beta. If you go to settings->General->iTunes wifi sync. What does the status bar show?

I thought wi-fi sync only takes place if the phone is on mains power?

It does say that but I've found it works even when unplugged - weird.

mmm, will be turning that off then. If Miss DL ends up with a flat battery I know whose fault it'll be ;D

Hers? For not charging it ;) as Toby said you can sync without being on charge

Just discovered something interesting regards reminders which may be of interest.

I was unable to set location based reminders, either manually or via Siri. When using Siri it accepted the request but the created reminder had no trigger on it, location or otherwise.

Turned out that it was because my reminders were set to sync with my Exchange account. Disabling this and setting them to sync with iCloud instead enabled the location stuff and, the first time I set a reminder based on location, it prompted me whether to enable location services for the Reminders app.

I had similar problems but with contacts & exchange as exchange doesn't support custom fields (e.g. Phonetic name, iPhone number, etc)

My contacts are already in iCloud because of the custom fields issue, but it still seems to get confused. No idea where it's trying to sync reminders - don't even know how to tell.

I suspect that it might not initiate sync while on batteries, but that doesn't stop you starting it manually. Same for iCloud too.

I'm still getting the 'sync forever' problem. Basically, it never stops syncing - it's always waiting for something to sync but it never happens. Lots of reports of this all over Google but the only way to clear it is to set up as a new iPhone, and I'm not doing that because there's no guarantee it won't come back.

PS - battery percentage reporting on the 4S is a bit broken. I deep-discharged mine to reset the battery performance because it was way off. After a full charge, the battery was reported as 2% full!

Right, I've got it.

Are there any apps worth getting to take advantage of retina? I've put all the old games on that I got, then didn't use on my 3Gs... but wondered if theres some hidden gems out there.

Real Racing HD :P

Having an Apple TV is awesome as I can AirPlay the race to the TV and use the phone as a controller :D

Had a major result on the battery life.

Prior to today, I was getting rather poor performance out of the battery, at least compared to some. In Settings -> General -> Usage, it reports two figures, Standby and Usage time. The Standby time appears to be the total time since the last full charge, irrespective of usage, whereas the Usage time should be the total amount of time you've actually been using the phone.

This wasn't the case. The Usage time was always far higher than it should be, showing far more time than I'd actually spent using the phone.

Many people have said they'd had success in doing a full restore via iTunes, re-downloading iOS5 to the phone and setting it up from scratch as a new phone. I did this last night, wasn't too much hassle, then put it on charge overnight and have been monitoring today.

My battery usage is much lower today than it has been previously and I've noticed that the Usage time is now far more representative of the time I've actually spent using the phone.

I can only surmise that there was some 'background' process left running which was not only contributing to the Usage time counter but also helping to drain the battery. The restore appears to have cured this, for now at least.

I deleted all email accounts and re-created them. That seems to have been enough as I'm only down to 50% after 36 hours despite using a fair whack of GPS.

Didn't want to lose all my App saves - otherwise I'd have also restored because that might be what it takes to fix iTunes sync issues (though I haven't synced since doing the email thing, so who knows).

Problem by doing that is I'll loose all my emails currently stored on my phone. :(

I've come to the conclusion my battery issues are something to do with syncing with Exchange, but I'm not sure if it's the actual syncing or the wi-fi. Suffice to say I disabled wi-fi before leaving home this morning and it's used hardly any battery at all all day. More experimenting required.

It's off to the Genius Bar tomorrow though. Vibration is almost as loud as the ringtone it's supposed to replace, so I think something might be up.

Yeah there are some bugs in some of the syncing and location features that lead to excessive battery usage.

Turn off sending to apple (bug: crash report loop), time zones & traffic.

Also, keep an eye on that location icon. Yesterday my reminders were constantly checking my location. I assume it was because of an old location based reminder I set. Looks like you need to tell it when you've completed the task!!

I turned off sending reports to Apple and that has seemed to drastically improved battery life, along with turning off WiFi when you aren't using it

Toby

I tried turning off everything and it made no difference. In the end I restored the phone with a fresh download of iOS5 and reconfigured everything exactly as it was and it's now much much better. I can't explain why.

I have WiFi and Bluetooth enabled all the time, with WiFi usage accounting for 90% of my daily connectivity (both home and work) and Bluetooth used for probably 5% of the day. I'm connected to my home Exchange server for push emails too so that can't be it.

My iPhone was much better until I put my work email back on it.

Inevitably, personal hotspot severely drains the battery. My iPhone made a capable hand warmer after using that for an hour yesterday! ;D

Had my iPhone geniused by a man with a very odd hairdo yesterday. Upshot - rattle, normal and his does it too. Didn't know much about my sync issue (but probably a bug). Siri, definitely a bug there and will go up the chain (almost certainly the same issue I have with Virgin Media), and he's sorted my vibrate issues (by changing settings to what I wanted all along, though I've just undone them so will have to put them back again).
