Ok so I updated itunes a couple days ago, I did a complete sync at 2pm today, I set it up to update to ios5 at 5:30pm and my phone is completely dead.

I keeps either telling me that the back up session failed or it gives me a -50 error (communication).

I have tried manual restore, I have tried different usb ports, I have tried shouting at it but nothing is working.

So currently I have lost all my contacts and all my photos (this is what I'm most upset about - lots of photos and videos of deceased pets) and have a phone that won't do anything.

Does anyone have any ideas?

If I use the restore to original settings will I destroy any hope of getting my photos back?

I have googled and googled but can't find anything that will help. :'(:'(

Might be worth trying a DFU mode restore (clicky (http://osxdaily.com/2010/06/24/iphone-dfu-mode-explained-and-how-to-enter-dfu-mode-on-your-iphone/)).

So long as you have a backup then it should put everything back for you.

Managed to break my phone twice whilst trying to upgrade early but using the DFU restore above and then setting up the phone from my backup (after the restore, it asks if you want to set up your iPhone as a new phone or use a backup. Select your most recet backup) everything came back perfectly (and then I got the OS upgrade to work as well!) :)

Good luck, hope it works, for you!

First of all your photos will be safe in your backups :) Even if you setup as a new phone, at any time you can restore from one of your old backups although I'm not sure how many itunes keeps.

If you can't get the timing right for DFU, use recboot (http://jaxov.com/2010/05/recboot-iphone-recovery-mode/) instead.

It's a good idea to find your last iPhone backup and back that up. Unfortunately I don't know where Windows iTunes puts it (though I can help if you have a Mac). If you get your iPhone back in order you can restore, and if not there might be a way to get the data out of the backup.

I've got several old backups but I'm not sure whether I made them or iTunes did. I hope the latter.

Well I turned off avast and windows firewall and it seems to have worked - it still said the backup restore failed but the phone went through the rest of the set up. I've manually copied my photos off. It had none of my apps on it (no idea if that it normal) so I'm just putting them all back on now as they were all in my itunes library.

I can't believe something as stupid as an anti virus or a firewall caused so many problems. I know apple aren't windows fans but seriously, having such a w*nky spaz like that over it is ridiculous!

I think tomorrow I'm going to hand write all my contacts out too in case of future apple fubars :/

When I updated mine, it took ages to put all my apps back on the phone, and then they didn't go back in the folders they were in previously, (I just had page after page of apps) and I had to move them back where I had them.

oh yeah - none of it is in the same place that it was but tbh I don't care - its all back and thats what I wanted.

Now to put music back on :p

I wouldn't be so quick to blame Apple (or Windows or Avast either).

I upgraded my iPad to ios5 on my Windows PC, which has Avast installed and Windows firewall running, with absolutely no problems. All my settings were reinstated from the backup and all my apps were restored to the same folders they were in before the upgrade - likewise with all my music and photos. This would suggest to me that your initial difficulty lies elsewhere.

My iPad worked, my iPhone worked, and then I had to do it again and it didn't. In other words, your experience may vary.

Whilst there's a thread on iOS 5 - thought I'd add some questions in here if that's ok? :)

Location services seem to be always "on" - and I'm worried it's going to drain the battery dry more quickly.

Also, what is the "localise iPhone" - I know it's a remote control/management app - but how does it work?

Things I like, using the volume + button to take pic, pinch movement for camera, picture editing. The reader function within a webpage to cut out superfluous information. Taking a pic when phone is locked.

The information screen (when you swipe down) thing don't really see the advantage of that to be honest, though the notification not taking over the whole screen when in an app is good. If you could add wifi, bluetooth etc... to the swipe down thing that would be useful. But all I have on there is the weather and today's appointments which frankly doesn't add much speed/useablility.

The "tasks" app is pointless as what's the point in having a diary and a task list?!

Mail feels a bit slower, and it doesn't seem quite as "slick" but I'm sure it's probably in my head. The functionality improvements do enhance it though.

Location services will drain the battery a little more but I can't say it's affected mine noticeably. I find anything that involves touching the screen a lot such as various games does the most damage to battery life, as does real-time GPS-ing as it's constantly updating. Things like playing music, having wifi turned on etc. I find makes negligible difference also.

One thing I've noticed since updating is that it's asking me to sign in to download apps with a different ID which is very confusing, and annoying if it's going to mess up my old apps when I sync. My two sign-ins were 'username' and 'username@gmail.com'. One I used for my phone, iTunes, syncing and all that malarkey, the other was for my Apple training, qualifications etc. Suddenly my phone is asking for the training account password. I *think* I've managed to sync the accounts now but I'm still slightly worried it's going to screw me down the line.

Edit: Great. Just received an email saying 'Your Apple ID was just used to download an app on a computer or device not previously associated with that Apple ID'.

Edit 2: Managed to use the iPhone app store app (!) to log out of that ID and into the regular one, then deleted and re-downloaded under the right account. Also had to do the same for Game Center. Will check what I'm logged in with in iTunes on my Mac, as it may have done the iOS 5 upgrade with the wrong ID (even though I never use it for this stuff). What a faff.

Location services may be "on" but unless you see the arrow in the top part of the screen the phone isn't going to be requesting gps data so you should be fine.

Ho Ho Ho (remembers all the comments about iphones having less 'faff' in the S2 thread).

I love the drag down notifications on the S2 but then of course that has wi-fi, bluetooth, auto-rotation, sound/vibration etc etc all across the top when you do that, so it's obviously got more functionality. :)

All phones are a faff if you insist on dicking with them. I couldn't even tell you what version of iOS is on mine, it works and does everything I need it to so why change anything?....

I do like some of the new features. The text shortcuts that you can set up are cool :) (does anyone know how many you can have?)
I also just found out about the quick punctuation screen swap (ie hold the "123" key then drag to the punctuation you want and release, it then put in the punctuation and goes back to the normal keyboard layout :))

Are there any other tips like that? That's probably very old but hey I didn't know about it :)

Oh just remembered something else I found yesterday. You can now get rid of the keyboard in message by dragging it down off the bottom of the screen. Always used to be a pain that if you wanted to read earlier messages you only had a small section of screen to read them in. :)

It only works while you have space in the text box. After that you can't hide the keyboard

Mark

Found the hidden away system services location apps this lunchtime - and disabled most of them. That should help the battery some.

Also found out why Siri was having such bother with anything to do with 'home' or 'work'. I have two copies of all my contacts on the phone. Need to figure out how to clean that up at some point, but I've done my own contact so that Siri should be happy now.

You can, but if its a long message that fills up the box, then it won't let you hide it anymore, as in it depends on the length of the text. :)

Ditto! :D

Well my battery life seems to have been adversely affected by the upgrade, mail fetching seems to take longer... though it's perhaps the FB app and the push data I receive that's causing more of a drain. Down to 65% and I unplugged it at 7am.

Kitten
18-10-2011, 13:55
can you switch off your mobile data while you're at work? I turned mine off on the s2 from the side button and the battery lasted about 3 days. It completely drains it, even though I've turned off background synching etc. Makes a huge difference, just try it when you know you're not going to look at it for a while (unless you have to leave it on all the time).

Will
18-10-2011, 14:43
Oh yeah I can - I usually turn off 3G when I don't need it - but they've blocked a lot of things at work so I use my phone a lot. I've probably just started to use it more and not realised. I do think a lot of extra connections/data collection is occuring though - I'm going to see if there's a data monitoring app I can install and run in the background to see what's happening. I'm just curious really. :)

Kitten
18-10-2011, 14:46
yeah it's surprising sometimes which sites use loads of data & battery. I've stopped using a couple unless I've connected over wi-fi recently.

Will
18-10-2011, 15:23

It polls every 15 mins - but nothing's changed there. Other than email downloading and mail handling seems slower :/ I haven't received many emails today - though I have used FB a bit. Still, unplugged at 7am, and now I'm at 30% :/

New FB app is about the only thing that's different other than ios 5.

Something not quite right there...

Brace yourself - there are a lot of people complaining about the battery life on the 4S.

In all seriousness, it'd be very interesting to hear how you fare with a direct 4 to 4S comparison with the same configuration, assuming you're just going to restore your 4 to the 4S?

When it syncs now, does it sync and you can still use the phone when its doing it, or does it still need to not be used whilst its doing it. Mine phone is being silly this evening, the home screen button is refusing to work about 90% of the time, so I tried to sync it to see if that would do it, (seems to have done the trick incidently) but I can still use the phone normally whilst its apparently syncing. Is this an iOS5 thing? I have the circle shaped thing with the arrows going round at the top, but nothing where its showing the battery level and sync (and if I was to unlock the phone the sync would stop.

Just discovered something with the notifications on the lock screen.

Already spotted that, when a new notification arrives, the slider says "Slide to view" or "Slide to read" or similar and takes you directly to the item which has just arrived. If you leave it and come back later then the slider reverts to "Slide to unlock" again.

Well I've only just discovered that you can slide individual notifications in the list - just slide the app icon on the left across to the right on the one you're interested in et voila!

Sync now happens any time. Part of the whole iCloud 'thing' where there's no physical act of plugging the phone in. :)

Home button may be a different issue though - they have a habit of getting dust under them which can make them unresponsive. If this is what you've got, you can try fixing it yourself (blow into the dock slot, maybe push the home button while you're doing it). If not, it's off to see a Genius. :(

That is because the phone stops charging the battery at 100% :) Which will happen overnight. I imagine the phone would begin charging again at say 95%.

That seems to be the general consensus on the mac forums.

And it's a good thing too given that continually charging a full battery is a sure way to kill it. :)

software can change the configuration of hardware, it doesn't need to change the actual device, just update it :)

LeperousDust
24-11-2011, 09:00
Software by it's very nature can be notoriously inefficient. You're not making the battery last any longer it would still power a fixed object, ie lamp for exactly the same amount of time. What the update is doing is using the battery more intelligently. In the same vein that petrol pretty much has the same power output as it always has in the last half decade anyway. Yet a lot of cars will quite happily see 50mpg now days, imagine explaining that to someone in the 60's 70's, not that they'd probably particularly care i guess! It's just down to pure efficiency.

Haha, that samsung nexus is basically the samsung galaxy SII, and it's been out FOREVER. People just ignore it because it's android and not iPhone ;).

Personally, i was a little disappointed with it! It's good, but not worth its money, you're paying or open source ICS. I'm waiting now until a galaxy S3 announcement, probably released feburary/march next year. The Galaxy S3 will be a real improvement.

My galaxy S is STILL coping remarkably well after 18 months out of sale, its the first phone i've ever managed to do this with and still feel happy! Ironically i could have got it on a long contract, but didn't want to risk it at the time! :p
