View Full Version : Need a new breakdown company

So, last week my polo wouldn't start. I assumed a flat battery but called out my breakdown company because if I'm paying them every month, I might as well use them!

While on the phone to them they told me my policy only allowed for 2 home recoveries. This doesn't ever change, you don't get more, ever. Last christmas my car wouldn't start after the cold broke my ignition cables... so thats my 2 used up.

This seems ridiculous, but anyway, for an old car like mine (99 Polo with 117k on the clock) it's a whole lot more likely to breakdown after being sat on the drive for a few days than anything else.

So, does anybody know of a breakdown company that doesn't have these kind of limitations?

You mean you only get two home starts for the life of your policy?? That seems a bit bizzare..

I've got the top package that comes with my insurance with Elephant.

Top package being European Cover or Home Assist? Either way check the T&C's in small the small pirnt document, i had a quick search and couldn't find anything stating this at all, so i'd have another talk with them on the phone, and assuming you've kept the contract, have a quick skim ream through that as well to see what you've agreed with. But i assume that they've just been giving you bull on the phone by the sounds of things :)

It's possible you could save money by not paying for your breakdown cover through your insurance though. I know the AA (i used to be with them when i had a car) have quite a few offers on over the year (and competitors). Check HUkD for cover, and remember to use TCB or quidco :)

Well I actually get free AA cover with my bank account I've just never bothered to do anything with it because I've got this other policy that I've had for longer.

I'll have to have a look in to that AA policy. Thanks.

I bounce between AA and RAC each year to get their new customer offers which always work out cheaper than being loyal. You can usually grab some quidco on top of that as well.

The quidco cashback is particularly high on AA* at the moment. Well worth looking into apparently.

*Insert obligatory "I've never had anything but trouble with the AA" comment here. Never had any problems myself, and to say I've used them extensively would be an understatement ;D

Yeah totally agreed, it's like Virgin/Sky, every other mobile phone offer, insurance, energy. The whole market is ruined ;D If people can be bothered to switch most major utilities now days you can save a fortune!

Btw Joe, do you get AA free with your bank, or is it "free" with their silver/gold/platinum/diamond/black accounts?
