View Full Version : Windows : free anti virus
I just got a new pc and am in the process of slowly putting things back on.
I have always used Avast as my antivirus but I was wondering if there are any other free ones that people would recomend over it?
Thank you

I've used Avast for many years with no problems. I recently switched to Microsoft Security Essentials for no other reason than to see what it was like. So far, I've had no issues at all. I wouldn't say it's any better than Avast but, it's no worse. If you're happy with Avast, just stick with it. If you fancy a change, MSE appears to be absolutely fine :)
Another vote for Microsoft Security Essentials. It's free and it's also getting good results in tests by independent testers.
And yet another vote for Microsoft Security Essentials :)

MSE here, although for some reason on one of my home PC's it hogs the CPU after boot and needs the service restarting. Once it has been restarted it's fine. Mind you, the PC also randomly blue screens with a TCP/IP stack issue and needs the OS reinstalling, so I wouldn't blame MSE for playing up on it.

+1
I've gone with MSE for the time being :)

AVG.
It works and it's neither intrusive nor resource hungry.
As the good chap above says, AVG for me.

Avast for me, been using it for years and not had any problems, but have also used AVG in the past too. Combine Avast and something like Anti-Maywarebytes and you've got a really good combination to keep out viruses and spyware.

I lobbed AVG on Miss Sincs Laptop. Nothing on mine.
Kaspersky (Free if you bank with Barclays) on my pc's.
Put MSE on a friends pc when I formatted and re-installed.
Nothing wrong with MSE, Low footprint, silent updates and it just works.
