So, anybody else got it?

I signed up through Quidco for a £15 cash back and a free month trial meaning I can use it for four month and it will only cost me a few quid if I keep it.

Overall, the quality is top notch and I'm more than happy with it. It works across all devices so I can watch on the Xbox, iPad and iPhone and I have the HDMI adaptor for the iDevices so I can plug it in to the TV fro full screen viewing.

What I did think is very handy is that it remembers your last watched shows and also the point you got up to, you can then go to any other device and resume viewing. That's great if I start watching a film downstairs and then decide to go to bed as I can just swap from Xbox to iPad and carry on upstairs. My only issue is that on the iPad I have had films stop a couple of times in the middle but a quick press of resume gets me going again. I'm not sure if this is a Netflix problem or just a comms issue with my iPad and router.

The downside? Not enough content. OK, that may be harsh....there is plenty of content. But where are the Bourne films? Toy Story? Schindlers List? There's loads of other films I've not seen and I thought great, I can work my way through some but they're not there. This could be its biggest downfall.

I got it purely due to the Quidco thing. Can't see me keeping it past a month as right now the content is far too limited, with the exception of Ideal I doubt I'll watch anything on there.

We've had it for about 3 years now. Content wasn't that great to start with, but we were using it for the DVD plan originally. The content has increased over the past few years, and it's now improving at a significant pace. Bought a roku box just over a year ago that primarily does Netflix for us as it's a bit poor on the Wii.

They still seem to have a bit of an argy-bargy with various media companies who don't seem to understand that they stand to gain by this, and stuff will come and go from streaming plans with little more than a months notice (not much they can do).

WB and Disney are two key media companies still holding out here. They're being assholes, mostly.

awesome, I have a feeling the UK content is rather restricted compared to the US. I would have thought they'd have just made the US content available in the UK.

Kitten signed up the other week and we've been using it on the xbox and while it is good the library needs expanding.

I've been using it for just over a month now. The content may be a little limited compared to the US service but there's still plenty for me to watch. Means I can finally check out Breaking Bad for instance and get back to watching 24. Plus I've been rewatching Californication and The US Office.

Few older films about that I've been enjoying too so I really haven't struggled to find something to watch. :)

For £5.99, it seems a bargain to me. Saves me renting/buying boxsets which I know I'd have ended up doing!

Looking forward to seeing the content expand. It's Only Sunny in Philadelphia was recently added and I've heard great things of that from US friends so I'm keen to see it.

We're not big movie watchers but this makes it so easy to just chuck a film on and for only £6 a month I think it's quite good value....but....unless the range of movies increases a lot then I can't see us keeping it. There are some huge decent films missing from the library which makes it kind of pointless if I can't watch the films I want to.

I signed up Saturday night to get the Quidco thing because when I'm working I like stuff on in the background and TV shows are the best thing to watch, mostly stuff like Jen's mentioned above. I looked a few months back and the content was shocking, not worth even a free trial, but now it's improved quite a lot, so am sure it will only get better over time. I think for 6 quid a month (I spend more on a trip to Starbucks), it's worth it.

Keep meaning to give this a try - will have to do so sometime, especially with these tricks to get the US content.

One thing that annoys me intensely is the lack of the Windows Media Center plugin over here, with no sign it will be arriving at all. As I have a dedicated HTPC in the living room running MCE, it'd be awesome to have Netflix integrated into that properly.

Either should be fine. I just changed the DNS in Wifi setting on the iPad and it works a treat. I'd go with just changing it per device probably as it doesn't affect other things like searches locations. My iPad now always searches google.com rather than .co.uk, if I'd changed DNS on the router then everything would be searching .com rather than just the iPad.

I expect to simplyfy licensing deals. If your in uk, you get uk. If you fly to America and use same account you get us content. If you go to jape and logo to you're account. You can watch anything.

If viewing the US content in the UK was a design feature, surely they could just include the US content that is not available in the UK in it as standard?

Myself and Miss Sinc watch 'Bones'. If I was supposed to be able to watch this in the UK on netflix then surely they would be available to me by just logging in normally rather than changing my DNS servers?

They could, but it's not a design issue, they specifically designed it, like that. So it would be a change of policy, rather than a fix.

That second to last sentence has me confused....

us = USA

Netflixs policy is one account and what you get depends what country you are in. So if you have a uk account and go on Holliday to America, you would see American version. If you went on Holliday to Japan, you wouldn't be able to view any films (assuming there's no Japanese films)
This is by design rather than an oversite.

LeperousDust
17-02-2012, 05:29
They could use IP locality and other methods to determine your location whilst still having one account. I doubt it's set in stone you will be able to bypass the "restrictions" so easily forever. But for now, good stuff! :)

Glaucus
17-02-2012, 08:24
Yeah they could change it, I'm jut saying the "loop" hole was there by design.
I'm not sure what else they could use.
Zune iirc checks to see what region windows is set to. But I'm pretty sure that's not transmitted in browser headings, so would need to change to a program format. Even then that's only a couple of clicks on windows.

They could always do it, so a uk account is uk only and us one is us only, regardless of where you are.

SidewinderINC

And that's completely understandable, but the fact that we are in the UK and can so easily change our settings to let netflix thing we're in the USA (or any other part of the world I would assume) is most likely an oversight and therefore, fixable without a change in policy.

Exactly Mondo, but when it becomes to big a problem and the studios press down heavily. Netflix will apologise and "fix" things. But already be a market leader ahead of Lovefilm. Let's be honest that is the ONLY thing this "workaround" is here for. It's win-win right now, but do you seriously think they don't know about it? Or as a MASSIVE content delivery company they aren't aware of locality?

They are censoring the oddest of things though. I would LOVE to know what the discussions where whilst they went through chopping random parts out.

I wouldn't even mind so much if it was written/directed/shot with that in mind, but it clearly wasn't. As long as whoever is writing and directing is aware they will have their work shredded at a later date to bring it in line with a "G" rating i'm sure that would be better :)

Depends on costing. I know it's not huge money but if it turns a £6 service in to £10+ then I'm not sure I'd use it. It's not about affordability but more about value. I'm not a huge film viewer and could quite happily go without or download anything I do want so I'll pay a little but that value soon runs out.

One thing missing from Netflix is some kind of "Watch List". I often come across a film in the list that I don't want to watch now but you can guarantee I'll forget about it later. Why can't I just add it to a watch list so I can quickly find it again?

Garp

... You don't have a queue? It's a standard part of the US release.

If we do, I've not found it yet. Not seen anything on the site or in the iPhone/Pad apps.

On android, top right of the four options:

Maybe it's because we only get instant here so no need for a queue as such?

Kitten

Still working here - I have created a virtual queue - I had a 'add to queue option''

Exactly right Desmond! I did it on the TV, not device. Obvs this is US blog but would be absent from start in UK I suspect.

I've been watching a second or two so that it drops into my recently watched list instead.

Not a perfect solution but better than nothing.

I mean the content, not the queue, not sure if that was clear!

What DNS servers are you using? The ones from the post in this thread?

Kitten
07-03-2012, 19:49
Yep. Same as always, haven't changed anything.

SidewinderINC
07-03-2012, 19:54
hmm, I've had to change DNS servers from those ones but have never had to register for anything. still have the US catalog

Kitten

What's cool is that my housemate can watch it on my Apple TV downstairs if I'm watching it in my room on my pad/mac... and it doesn't moan! (Unlike Spotify...)

Kitten

ours is still showing the US stuff without changing anything! Not complaining, obvs!

I think I was a bit over eager when I changed my DNS servers to a different set of US ones, probably just a bit of down-time rather than cut-off :)

Still working fine here now.

Mine still works fine but I have to keep registering with unblock-us. Not a problem as I just changed the email address each time with a different number, it takes about 20 seconds.

Kitten

I've not registered with anything, our initial DNS fix thing (as Pete posted) is still working fine :)

Mine stopped taking any more multiple sign ups the other night :(
Ended up paying for it in the end as I can't be bothered with the hassle and it's only a few quid a month. We're watching quite a few documentaries so getting our monies worth :)

Joe 90

Yeah that DNS stopped working & I saw a youtube video which was on about $5 a month or something - anybody know the company name?

SidewinderINC

I still haven't paid a thing and it's still working fine *shrug*

Kitten, did you have to change to a different USA based DNS server?

Kitten

We're UK only now, although i have to say I didn't even notice, probably because we finished Breaking Bad. Still plenty on there. Certainly for the price of a couple of beers.

SidewinderINC

still USA here (I'm assuming).

Have every season of south park, and when I log into the UK netflix on my laptop there's only 10-15.

Have every season to date of bones, that's not even on the UK one as far as I can see?

Kitten
21-04-2012, 12:06
I can't see Bones on my phone app. We watch the stuff we watch (Series etc) when it's running/available, its really just for flicking around like another TV channel when we're bored/working for us.

Desmo

Still got US here too, it's easiest to tell by the documentaries section.
