Hey hey heeeeeeeey!

We're trying to find somewhere to pick up a second hand camera to take on the trip around the world! We will have a quick shooter with us but would like to get a decent camera for some mega shots.

Ideally we've been eyeing up the Nikon D200 avec a couple of lenses suitable for landscapes and portraits!

Is anyone selling any D200's or something similar (or know of peoples who are?) and / or any lenses suitable for landscapes and portraits?

Could peoples recommend some equivalents and specific lenses too?

Fankoo :D

I have a boxed canon 30D with grip (3 batteries) that's not doing anything...I'd get a kit lens on it and it'll be fine for 95% of the stuff you want, except shooting LONG zoom wildlife.

May I ask how much moolah?! You can texteth if you wish :D

Might be a bit :( about wildlife though as through Africa we may be seeing some mega sights!

Don't need to text. This will be easier and more transparent :)

The camera is missing the eye piece.

Replacement on eBay £5.

Last one on sale on TP was last month for £185 (+ P&P) with no grip.

http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=403080&highlight=30d

On sale for used on Amazon at over £300.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-Digital-Camera-18-55mm-3-5-5-6/dp/B000F6ILPA/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1337107825&sr=1-1

Ebay - around £200

The grip is a genuine Canon BG-E2N grip, was £100+ new. Still go for silly money on Amazon.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-BG-E2N-Battery-Grip-For/dp/B000V9D5KC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1337107525&sr=8-1

£95 new??!!

or Ebay £80 (inc delivery).

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-Canon-BG-E2N-Battery-Grip-EOS-20D-30D-40D-/320902376031?pt=UK_Camera_Battery_Grips&hash=item4ab745aa5f#ht_629wt_99

I can let you have it for £160 (+P&P) for the body, so 20% less than eBay? How's that sound? I might sell the grip separately as i don't think it will help and in fact just add bulk to your trip, unless you like it?

That sounds like a rather good offer from Mr Lin I have to say, a lot of camera for the money!

Pheebs

It is a great offer!!

After reading up on it, it does seem like a good camera but we are looking for something a little bit higher spec (as said, in an ideal world we'd pick up a D200). It's a shame as what you have there is a mighty bargain!

But thank you Mondo muchly!!

For some reason I cannot see the classified of TP at the moment (though haven't been on in donkeys)! Boo hiss!

The 30D is a flipping brilliant camera. Hardly a base model DSLR!!
I'd have bitten mondo's hand off for that, but each to their own

Oh take back TP... for some reason I only have 5 posts... I think I posted under a different name for sometime then started a new one as Pheebs but cannot for the life of me think what my old UN was!

Weird! :D

Oh hang on a minute... Sams being an egit... he looked up a completely different camera the moron!!! He had one up on the screen that said 3 megapixs and a stupidly limited iso range....

I was just comparing prices not spec so thought it was a bargain but couldn't understand why the spec Sam was saying wasn't really reflected in the price! Kates comment made me go "hmmm something ain't right..." ;)

He's now looking up the 30D. I think he became distracted as it sounded like a bra size.

Men!

He apologises and says he was knackered! (True been at an event all weekend 8am - beyond midnight!)

What lens kit would you suggest with that one Mondo? We're adding up some figures here :) Sorry to mess you about!

By Kit lens, it is the lens that these camera comes with, I don't have one because when I bought it i bought the body only and a lens separately. Something like this one

http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=400466&highlight=kit+lens

Around £50 secondhand, or the previous version that without the Image Stablisation for around £30.

This comment makes me wonder if an SLR is the best option. Given your mode of travel (limited space) and the limits of an SLR with regard to zoom without a long lens, a bridge might be a better choice?

Also dust wise I think a sealed unit might be prudent and you'll spend a lot to get a fully weather proofed SLR and even then you only have to take the lens off at the wrong time and disaster!

We're going to be taking something like yay along too:

http://static.bhphotovideo.com/indepth/indepth/sites/default/files/resize/remote/ad5a3f13072434634717e11c5f5df91b-412x224.jpg

With regards to the travel it's a risk we're willing to take for good photos in between snap shots from the above. It's not something we'll be pulling out all the time but in various locations when stopped and when we're exploring villages / cities / surrounding campsite etc we will be using it then (so standard use that any other person with a DSLR camera would do!)

We had a lovely conversation with a professional travel journalist and photographer who rides from country to country snapping shots about the risks and problems of storage of a DSLR. He was kind enough to spend over an hour chatting with us pointing out the pros and cons and best way to travel with the kit and he says keeping it in our waterproof tank bags on top of the bikes would be a perfect plan.

He does the same and sometimes carries a whole pannier of camera equipment (never trust a metal pannier to be waterproof and safe for anything delicate!0 and bodies over thousands of miles! Such a lovely chap :) So if he's happy to do it we are too :)

We've been working all of this evening (still are! Yay to self employment and broken computers!) but will deffo look more into your camera the next couple of days Mondo :) Thank you again!

He looked up the old old D30 instead of the 30D didn't he? :p

Ahahaha most probably! I didn't think it sounded right what he was saying spec wise and the prices I was pulling up! Funny!

We've just found out Sams mate has a 30D who we're seeing this weekend so we will be popping in and having a tinker with it then and then popping to a couple of camera shops to see the differences! We get paid next week so is it okay for us to get back to you then?

Thanks Mondo :)

Sorry been super busy and haven't had a chance with all the motorbike organising, birthdays and engagements!

We're going to say a big THANK YOU but no thank you to the camera Mondo :) Super generous of you though.. we played with one the other weekend and it was lovely but we've now been plonked on the fence as to whether we take one or not and go for something like the canon G1X instead. There's so many pros and cons... a lot depends on space too and until we get the bikes fully kitted we don't know how much space we are going to have!

With everything going on it's unfair to keep you hanging! It's going to be a decision we make in the next few weeks so if you want to continue and sell elsewhere please do :)

Thank you though!
