Is it just me or are Canon taking the mick a bit lately?

I see they've discontinued the 24-70 mk1 and the 580EXII, both of which have been replaced with vastly more expensive models which are barely even available yet.

I'm sure the prices of the replacements will drop over time but, right now, they appear to be sticking it to consumers. Anyone who was in the market for a 24-70 is now looking at paying over twice the price for a mk2 or sourcing a used mk1. I notice that hardly anywhere has stock of the mk1 any more and the prices have risen as a result. Far from the used value of the mk1 dropping in light of the mk2, as many speculated, I can see it rising in the near future.

As for the 580EXII, this has been replaced with the 600 which is nearly £300 more expensive. £640-ish is an insane price to pay for a flash, especially if you don't require the new functionality it provides over the 580 as the power is pretty much the same.

As the 24-70 and 580EXII are two of Canon's main 'workhorse' products, I can't help but feel they're milking the replacement models for all they're worth. I'm glad I got a 24-70 when I did rather than waiting to see how the mk2 affected prices, and I've just sourced a used 580EXII to replace my 430EXII, something I wasn't planning on doing quite yet but which I now feel the need to do in case the used prices start rising once new stock dries up.

Rant over :p

They basically separating the consumer and professional more with their pricing. It makes it even more difficult to justify it if it is purely as a hobby.

They've done the same with their compact cameras as well. Instead of a range of three entry level, mid and high-end products, there is now a plethora of very similar models, which makes choosing the best one for you almost impossible.

LOL :D

One advantage of having no fashion sense whatsoever is that I just buy the cheapest no-name jeans I can find, on an as-needed basis :)

I do have a weakness for decent sunglasses tho :)

I have the same problem with topman jeans...

Add to that the fact that topman only does stupid jeans now and I am disgruntled...
