My Polo needs to go so last weekend I got in contact with a friend who runs a garage & he has a mk4 Golf that seems to suit what I need.

As far as Golfs go the mk4 doesn't seem to be as good as others, but what do you think to this;

I would have thought a 1.4 golf will be slow and not great economy-wise. Sorry to hear the Polo had to go.

Yeah I thought that might be the only problem. The 1.4 in the polo is fine, quite quick for a little car tbh. But I was looking at 1.9d in golfs. Might have to see if any other suitable cars are expected to come in because this was just coincidentally one that came in on Tuesday.

Mine feels slow with 150bhp at times, i'm surprised it could even move under it's own power with only 75bhp.

edit - that's also a lot of money for what it is, you could get yourself a tidy 1.8T GTI for a few hundred quid more than that or a TDI for around £2000.

Well it's sold already but he's said he's got a bora for £1900 which is more like the kind of car I wanted so I'll have to go have a look tomorrow as it doesn't seem to be listed online

Bora is essentially a Golf with a boot and usually cheaper - so for £1900 i'd be expecting a TDI 130 or something?

Yeah I hope so as that's the kind of thing I've seen for that money on auto trader.

My dad used to have one of the diesel 1.9s & to this day says its the best company car he's ever had so *fingers crossed*

They sound a bit (well very) agricultural but as diesels go, they're not too unreliable, they get reasonable economy figures and they pull well enough in 130 or 150 guise. Even the 110s aren't too bad but i'd prefer a bit more power in a car like the mk4 golf/bora.

Yeah I'd love the 130, but we had the 110 I think & it always seemed to have enough power to get by. I'm happy sitting at 60/70 on my commute though to keep the fuel in the tank! (until I hit the country lanes back near home that is!)

I want a golf. With all this rain my sunroof is leaking in the crappy Clio again. :(

Consider the Seat Leon as well - it's a Golf with a funny badge and different body but you'll likely get newer for your money too :)

Indeed - Skoda Octavias are no doubt lurking around for this sort of money too.

All based on the Golf platform.

The Golf is the most expensive of the lot purely because it's a Golf though, the Bora is definitely a good alternative for less money. Inside they're identical.

Fabia VRS are a lot of fun, but interior (even top spec) won't quite have the same feel. Those immeasurable things here and there...

Fabia is a whole class of car smaller though, akin to a Polo rather than a Golf.

It isn't that much of a difference. It is only 150mm longer in length. There is still plenty of leg room, even in the back, even my 6ft 4 brother can get in the back. I have a 1.2 Fabia Sport and for a small engine it is pretty nippy. They are just as good as VW after all they are made up of Audi/Seat/VW parts.

I've agreed to the bora. Had a little drive in it & very happy with the deal.

It's an 03 1.6 with about 75k on it. Drives well, just been MOT'd & taxed to jan. I got £400 for my polo which I bought 2 years ago for £1k & have since done 40k in to take it up to 130k miles so I class that as a ridiculous offer!

Total for the bora then is £1600 & hopefully if I can get my stereo & mic removed tomorrow I can go pick it up ;D

Sounds like a decent enough buy that - the Golf/Bora is a decent solid car, nice and comfortable if not the most exciting drive in the world :)
