So its time for my upgrade and I am looking for a good deal here, using quidco to try and minimise expense.

I have a 16gig 3GS at the moment and am paying £15.50 a month, but I fear the phone may not cope with another years use.

O2 contracts only become reasonable if tied into a 24 month contract, and for £299 I can get the 16 gig 4Gs but at £18.50 a month.
Thats £444 + £299 = £743 for 2 years phone use.

As a comparison, an unlocked 4gs from Apple is £499 and I can go pay as you go and top up £10 a month.
after 2 years, thats £499 + £240 = £740 (-£10 cashback from quidco) but this gives more data allowance - although I am unlikely to worry much about this, and I am not tied to a contract.

In both cases, I can get £75 from o2 recycle on my old 3gs.

I really dont know what to do!

Any ideas?

You don't want to hang on a few months until the new iphone comes out, because that means that either you can get the new iphone, or get the 4S cheaper, as when the new phone comes out, the price on the older phones usually drops?

Theres a part of me that wishes I had held on and not upgraded from the 4 to the 4S, because the difference is minimal.

Move away from the lolphone! Go for the S3! :p

On a serious note, 24 months contracts are a joke. Paying more than £20 for a contract is also daft (unless you need it or you get your money's worth of course). So I think the PAYG is the best option, but it's a painful price for the phone - and is it worth it?

How much money would you get back for the 3GS?

£75... I'll sit on my options a while I think - with a sensible head on, iPhone is just too expensive; but I'm so used to it now, I can't go back!

S3 is 28.50 a month (24 months yes) with orange on panther 31 through dial-a-phone right now. £70.70 cashback with topcashback. 1Gb internet (literally superb) 600mins unlimited texts, two orange swapables, orange wednesdays and orange magic number!

As much as I HATE contracts esp at 2 years, I can't work out an S3 cheaper. Cheapest sim free i've seen an S3 is £450. Assuming I get a half decent SIM only plan around £10 a month (but could grab cashback, so we'll average say £7? THE very best deal I can imagine) Thats around £90 a year only the contract so assuming you keep the S3 for two years (I've kept my S1 for two years easy :)) then thats £(180+450)/24 per month which I believe is around £26 but you do have to stump up £450 in one lump sum first to save around £25 a year....

As I said normally i'd be SIM free, but the SIM free price the S3 is commanding its reeeeaallllly hard to justify it! I've been holding off (not long :p) hoping the price would drop something but it's barely budged!

So in summary I'd say S3 on orange with DAP £28.50 a month :D

For the last couple of years we've bought our phones outright and just use PAYG. Works out much cheaper for us in the long run as we're very light users.

I can get 250 for my lolphone so will be able to put that towards the s3. I'd I do For a contract I can get the orange 21 PCM contract for under £18 which covers 100 mins 750meg and 500txts owing to corporate discounts. The PAYG is tempting though.

It definitely used to be the case that you'd pay a hefty premium for an iPhone compared to Android handsets but lately this seems to have changed with the latest top-end Android phones commanding much the same price.

If you are going to go with an iPhone then I'd definitely wait at this point as the next model is only around three to four months away. As for contracts, I personally don't like long ones but, if a 24-month contract works out best for you and you're happy to be tied to the network for that long then I don't see a problem with it. I personally prefer to pay more for a shorter contract and am on a 12-month one on my 4S.

Do you know anyone who works for one of the networks? You can often get a discount through them if so. I've got a 30% discount on my Voda contract via a friend which means my 4S works out at a total cost over the 12-month term of £562.

Absolute tosh! :p
I went from a 3GS to a Samsung Galaxy S2. It took a few days to get used to Android, but I was so glad I did it, and I'll never go back to an iPhone now. I've had it just over a year and still wouldn't swap it. I'm not even interested in upgrading. It does absolutely everything I want. Absolutely brilliant phone. Still got my iPhone, but it's purely an iPod for running/car now. I don't ever use it for internet browsing etc.

^^ Exactly the same. Went S2 in June last year, then even when mine got pinched last month, I've stuck with Android (HTC Desire HD which isn't the S2 but is good enough). I used my iphone for a week (I use it when I go out running/cycling etc or use it as an ipod in the gym so I don't have to carry my phone everywhere in case I bash it) and had to go back to Android, it drove me mad. The iPhone 4S just feels slow and clunky in comparison.

Although saying that I'll be interested to see what they bring out after the S3. The S3 is far too stupidly large for me, it doesn't fit in any of the usual places I keep my phone and I want a phone I can use with one hand, which is utterly impossible with the S3. It's just too big for my purposes.

I was tempted by the note - but that really is too big. The s3 is perfect and I can't wait to get away from the lolphone!

Whilst I can't speak for Kate, I find itunes annoying, I find the lack of ability to do anything on the phone irritating (i.e. being able to save my documents on it etc...) using itunes to synch has cocked up my calendars several times (1 time it was user error I admit, the other time was just stupid options). It's now slow to use, I cannot add any more storage, I cannot change the battery, reception is poor, and using it for calls is just painful, and I can't just copy files to it, or programs at will.

The phone just works, yes, it's simple, and it does the job. The interface is nice, if limited, but it's a great package. It was a market leader and no other came close. However, after owning several lolphones I just cannot wait to move away. I just don't get on with it anymore - the relationship has come to an end. I think it's also because I struggle with apple products and just don't like them.

It's very thin ;)

Unfortunately, everyone I've seen using the S3 looks a bit daft because they're so big. It's all a bit:

Sure it's a great phone especially if you've got big man hands but I've got a tablet for the bigger screen uses, I don't need something I can't hold in one hand.

I don't think she's irked, I think she's saying, as was I, that it's completely rubbish to say that you can't go from iphone to android because you're used to the iPhone. It's a very easy transition.

You've got big hands though. That's the big thing with it. If it's too big for me to hold I can't manoeuvre it properly and I don't want to have to use both hands :(

It's ok... I know what that's like - I'm used to using 2 hands often..... *ahem*

For me it's JUST about right - any bigger though and it would be too big.

Just to add a counterpoint to the ladies above, I and three colleagues have had exactly the opposite experience, having lived with Android for well over a year and then moved to iPhones and none of us have ever looked back - prefer it massively.

I think it's all to personal preference and what you want from a phone. Android is cheaper, has bigger screens, more customisation/personalisation and cheaper/free apps. iOS has more/better apps, better integration with other Apple products, iTunes Match etc etc.

You pays your money... :)

Will
06-07-2012, 17:09
I don't need or want integration with crapple products so that's not an issue for me :)

The android market is growing hugely as the market is becoming more equal. Though I accept in the walled garden that is apple it's app store is still leaps ahead.

Why wouldn't you want to be able to save files to your phone or actually be able to make it do what you want it to do?

I used to love the fact that the lolphone was so different and slick, and it is slick and cool... however to me, it's had it's day, it's just too awkward and restrictive for me. And I hate the media playback limitations on the lolphone, and itunes... again, I hate it.

Each to their own though, and I completely understand why people like the lolphone - it's a great phone, and works. However for me, I've come to the realisation that it's just too restrictive and awkward to use. I'm bored of the iphone and its limitations and the fact it's just not that good (to me) as some of the android interfaces and basic interaction. Also you can have different hardware on android, and you have to use an apple product. I'm so disillusioned by this product, and whilst it's pretty and "cool" - I'm so bored of it too.

Hmmm I wouldn't mind an androiod phone, but worried that some of the physics apps I have may not be available. In other news, it seems I can get £90 for my 3GS!

Again, you're looking at purely the s2 and since for iPhone beaters. There are so many, having an 'android' doesn't really compare unless it's one of the better spec models.

I could have had a 4S cheaper than my Android when I got it, but didn't want it. Too many people go along the cost route when for me, certainly, it's not an issue at all. I'll happily pay good money for what I want, that just happens to be an Android. I'd also argue about the apps being better. More yes, but so many of them are pure ****e. Quality, not quantity for me, thanks.

Since my s2 went, I've been using an HTC Desire HD, which even though not a 'new' release, is a far more pleasant user experience in my opinion than the 4S.

Just checked out s2 and s3. At the monent, I'm kind of ruled by cost and this does seem cheaper. I don't mind staying with O2 for 2 more years as in a year I'd not be able to afford an upgrade anyhow.

As tempting as PAYG is, I'm afraid I'd also have this problem; upgrading in the future will require another big expense.

Hmm this really isn't a clear cut answer. I just want a phone to last another couple of years (physically and software wise) that is a manageable cost!

Ok well I think I am going to leave o2 as they couldnt offer me any deal at all. Looks like giff gaff are going to be getting my custom whilst I sort out the cheapest sim free phone I can.

Anyone know if the giff gaff sim will work in my O2 iphone? I guess cos giff gaff use the o2 network there shouldnt be a problem?

Toby

Yeah Giffgaff use the O2 network so, even if you're network locked, you shouldn't have any problems.

Giffgaff are good - I use them for my iPad :)

I use a giffgaff sim in an o2 iPhone and yes it's just fine, the iPhone doesn't know otherwise and the carrier section at the top says o2. I've found giffgaff quite good so far especially for the money, though it's only been a few weeks.

Toby

The only downside I've found with Giffgaff compared to O2 "proper" is they don't support tethering on the iPad.

I think at some point the Android marketplace is going to have to go down the same approval route that Apple pioneered. I understand that wasn't possible in the early days as it was key to establishing the brand, but now I think its a necessary evil.
