View Full Version : My new car...

In case anyone didn't see it over there I have a new car. I made it with my life spared, just. It's a ratty black 1954 Ford Pop, completely standard except for 'glass rear wings. So that's an 1172cc animal with three gears, first down where second normally is roaring through 5.5:1 gearing, tearing up some badass 4.5" wide crossply tyres. Vicious nosebleedesque braking is provided by rod operated 9" drums. Performance is 0-50 in 24 seconds.

Here are some pics I took this afternoon:

Having attacked the inside with a number of screwdrivers, spanners and a wire brush I've got the interior out and stacked in the back of the garage. I'm pleasantly surprised for once that it's actually in much better condition than I was expecting. It's been restored at some point with all new panels and needs no welding at all. I just wire brushed the crud off the floor and gave it a once over with satin black. That bit in the middle is in fact a carpet, but the colour hasn't come out very well.

The big holes are because it has wooden floors and I took them out. The passenger side actually had a serious dose of woodworm so it just crumbled away but it was easy to dispose of like that, and I'm left with the drivers side for a template which is handy. As you can see it needs a new exhaust, I have a stainless system on its way.

In't boot:

Down the side:

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH just noticed the speedo goes up to 90, HAHAHAHAHA Ford, in your dreams!!!!!ONE2OWNED

Work that needs doing is basically spannering. There's a bit of a knocking from the back so something needs tightening up propwise, one rod end needs replacing, the brakes are all fine. The engine is a runner but hasn't been run for some time so it'll be getting new points, condensor, plugs and leads ready for the big fireup, plus I'm swapping it over to negative earth and 12V as it's 6V currently.

Future plans are as follows. Cammed up 100E engine fairly soon, juice the brakes using Anglia 105E drums on the front beam and a 105E rear axle, followed by souped up Anglia Super 1200cc and 4 speed box or other old combo. This will probably happen next summer as for now it's going to be the daily driver.

And best of all is the girl likes it.

I've given the engine a once over with some new electrical bits so it's pretty much ready to fire up. Picking up a new exhaust tomorrow evening so later this week it might be driving about again. Just need that damn windscreen (the one in there is cracked to buggery but you can't see it in the photos) and some tyres which are frighteningly expensive. It's all cost me a bit more than I was expecting but I guess I'll get it back when I sell it.

Beauty!

Would love something like that. Not enough space for it though. Plus already have projects...

My dad drove one of them back from Sicily with no brakes... We have a Morris 8 in the garage which needs some work doing on it.

Cheers guys.

I got the engine running on Saturday. To my *utter disbelief* it fired up and ran first time :D

Must get that Anglia going soon - it's been too long in the making but I'm feeling the urge to work on it again so it will happen.

Well folks, it's been 7 months of spannering, blood, tears, two trips on the AA towtruck and $$$ but I finally drove it into work for the first time today.

AND I MADE IT!!!!!11111ONEZ!!!

Wow, does it look any different or has it all been mechanical work?

All mechanical. Apart from the new number on the plate, some indicators and shinier wheels it looks exactly the same.

Looks like this inside:

Sorted the headliner out now.

Evidence of blood:

Under the bonnet minus a few hoses, converted to 12V alternator to replace 6V dynamo:

Just got to get it through that MOT tonight...

Two engines and a whole year later it has passed its MOT again tonight. Damn it feels good to be back behind the wheel after 12 weeks of her Scenic!

Thanks to Will for the help putting the engine in. Well, he was the engine crane :D

Did you get the water leak sorted? Was it just a case or torquing down the headbolts a bit?

Jonny69
04-07-2008, 21:04
Yes, they all took between 1/4 and 1/2 turn to get back up to torque. It's running great now and no leaks :)

I've been battling pre-ignition with this engine so I did a little experiment. I know to stop pre-ignition there are a few things you can do. Less timing advance, richer mixture or higher octane fuel. I already tried knocking a few degrees out the timing but I was struggling to get it to idle and it would splutter as you came off idle and got on the gas. I tried 97 octane fuel but the compression isn't high enough to merit this really. Didn't make any difference anyway.

I noticed the splutter disappears when the choke is on when it's cold so there must be a bit of mixture affecting this. I took about 6 degrees out the timing to roughly where I know where the knocking stops, this totally kills the idle so I had to wind the idle speed screw in to compensate. Optimum idle mixture is then when the idle speed is highest so I set it there. BIG splutter this time, as expected with the ignition that far back. Richened the idle mixture until the splutter went and wound the idle screw in more so it would sustain a good idle. Then took it out for a drive...

...absolutely bloody spot on! Right up on power, no knocking on the hills or at revs and it's a lot quieter and smoother. Who'd have thunked it eh? Celebrated by taking it out on the motorway and overtook some trucks. When I change the oil at the weekend I'll take it out and see how fast it goes.

Also won this for the twin carbs:

http://www.dropfiles.net//files/319/Pop103E/chokecable.JPG

Twin choke cable off a Europa XS light aircraft. It was the only one I could find that had the 'right' look. Just got to win me that skanky Massey Ferguson +/- 60A ammeter and the dash will be complete :)
