View Full Version : Argh!! Damn mobile cameras.
i was driving down the A435 south of birmingham yesterday afternoon, and just as i left the little dual carriageway bit, i hadn't slowed down enough (was doing 47-48mph indicated), and there's one of those spacky white vans on the side of the road. i didn't notice it right away, so i'm almost certain it got me!
i'm all for those speed vans in built-up areas where, it could be argued, they're actually doing some good, but i can see no safety benefit to having one there. except to piss me off when i hadn't decelerated fast enough.
fair enough, i was going faster than i should've been, but shouldn't they be out catching real criminals, not people who're going slightly too fast, but are decelerating anyway!!?!! i mean, there was a roundabout 200yds after this van, so it's not like people are going to be hooning it down there anyway. really pisses me off, this sort of underhand traffic policing.
</rant>
They got me on a dual carriageway in Northampton last year. Bright, clear, dry day, not much traffic around and the cheeky bastards hid behind some bushes so you didn't see them till it was too late.
£60 and 3 points for 45 in a 40.
They're real bastards in Northampton. I'm always very careful of my speed when I drive through there.

So am I now.
They're bastards everywhere really.
Stolen from another thread, but sums things up nicely...

Speed cameras should be nuked from space ...i would have said burned with fire but they do that round here already
Been sitting on 9 points here for the last 4 years all off now so its time to speed up again !!!!!
my first 3 points were picked up the same way fatiain were bloody cop hiding behind a tree 37 in a 30
the other 6 were picked up in the space of 36 minutes M6 and the A13 :(

I've never been done for speeding - which is quite something considering I was a taxi driver for 5 years :D
Stan :)
*Most* taxi drivers tend to be good drivers though, as they're on the road so much and their livelihood depends on it, so I'm not really surprised by that.
There's always the occasional idiot/con artist of course, unfortunately. Hopefully they get caught before I get in their car.
I got done for 85mph, but got off after I prooved my car couldn't be doing 85mph and slow down for the tolls in the distance involved.
Then I got caught doing *ahem* lots of miles per hour (flat out basically) and the case timed out because they didn't prosecute me within the alloted time.
Then I was caught doing 95mph in a hire car having been violently and deliberately cut up by a nob in a Corsa. I was intent on remonstrating with him, which I did in the end, anyway, I sent the NIP back and nothing ever came of it.
I guess i've been lucky. I tend not to speed at all nowadays.
was doing 47-48mph indicated
That equates to about 43-44mph if your car overreads, in which case you'll be fine. If you were doing 47-48 indiciated by GPS, then you would be screwed.

In my experience almost all taxi drivers are complete tools with no respect for the rules of the road, no consideration for other drivers, and have a complete lack of any ability to use their indicators. There are obviously some exceptions (Stan being one I'm sure, he's too nice to be a bastard driver :D), but the majority around here certainly fit my description.

I always was and still am a courteous driver. Where I come from, taxi drivers are more likely to be courteous than the public (more likely to let cars out of a junction for example). I don't know much about taxi drivers in other places as I don't get many taxis nowadays.
As far as the speed limit is concerned; I tended to consider speed limits as recommendations and would drive as fast as my driving ability and road conditions would allow (e.g. on a straight, wide, dry road with no other traffic around, I would plant my right foot but in wet conditions on a busy road, I may well drive at considerably slower than the maximum speed limit - especially with passengers).
Stan :)
think i may have been nicked on saturday on our way to Alton Towers :(
i hate those average speed cameras as its easy to loose track of whether you are in or out of a set.
im just hoping that before i booted it i was doing well below the speed limit so it drops the average speed down
*fingers crossed*

that was speedo-indicated.
fingers crossed 8-I3ALL...i haven't heard so far. hope you don't either!
nice avatar btw
You're probably fine Sic - generally they ignore you unless you go over the speed limit by a good 5mph at least.
