View Full Version : 360 VGA cable confusions

This thing's vaguely confusing me so bear with me :p Handily, nothing seems to have arrived with instructions :D
Got a Gameplay VGA Cable for the 360. It's got a connector which initially I assumed plugged into the back of the monitor.
The problem is my monitor (Viewsonic VE710b) seems to have the VGA cable moulded into the back of the monitor.
So then I thought I'd try a KVM to sort it. KVM arrived but then only has a box for plugging in the monitor to then the 2 cables to plug into the 2 PCs. But due to the type it won't plug into the 360 VGA cable as they're both male connectors.

Erm, now what? :D
I know sod all about stuff like this.

Mark

VGA gender changer, or a KVM that doesn't have cables welded in (:p). Or see if the back comes off the Viewsonic and there's a plug inside (it happens).

Guessing I need to look for a male to female VGA adaptor then? I need something to look up :p
Don't want to mess around with the back of the viewsonic, can't afford to replace it ;)

You do still have the instruction manual, right? ;)

If I'm understanding you correctly, you have two female connectors - one on the end of the XBox cable and one on the end of the monitor cable.

If so, you need an M-M gender changer:

Male vs female - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gender_of_connectors_and_fasteners

Your option - http://www.maplin.co.uk/Search.aspx?criteria=L49BT&DOY=24m10

Yup the instruction manual's in Swansea.
And i know the differences thanks :p Just needed to know where to look really, hadn't thought of Maplins so ty :) Bit pricey mind :/

£1.92 from Amazon (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000067RG0/ciaouk-21/ref=nosim) :)

Stan :)

Mark
24-10-2006, 15:23
Maplin one is better quality, and Desmo had trouble with cheapo Belkin, but at that price and assuming the P&P is OK, then no harm done I guess.

Edit: £5.15 at Amazon after P&P

Haly
24-10-2006, 15:24
Ahh bit more my price range :D Ordered so hopefully it'll sort it. Otherwise I think i'll just stick to the tv :p
How does the quality affect it? If it's picture quality, I can live with it np for now :)

Mark
24-10-2006, 15:27
Yeah, picture quality. By the time you add on the P&P the price wasn't much different. :)

Haly
24-10-2006, 15:30
About £5 difference isnt' it? It's quite significant for me right now as I'm trying to cut back on costs :p
I'll have better picture quality when I can afford it :D Thanks both :)

Any time :)

Mark

If my local store had them in, the difference would be £1.84. :)

Gonna say, thought there was one in Stoke?

Haly
24-10-2006, 15:36
If there is, I have no idea where :s

Mark
24-10-2006, 15:37
It's in Stoke. There's one in Nottingham too. I've got a new one in Reading and I've not been there yet, so was going to check it out this weekend (if I can figure out what bus I need to catch to get there).

Haly
24-10-2006, 15:37
Meh, by the time I got there it probably wouldn't be worth it. Quite happy just ordering the one off Amazon. :)

Daz
24-10-2006, 15:38
It's only about 12 miles you know. You could probably walk it before it shut :p

:p
I was more thinking of petrol costs! Yes I'm cheap but I need to be if I want to afford nights out ;)

Mark
24-10-2006, 15:52
What do petrol costs and walking have in common? :p

I certainly don't mind trying if you can wait a week. Up to you. :)

Haly
24-10-2006, 15:52
Nah I've ordered it now. I'm happy with ordering it, it's just you lot that can't decide ;D:p

Mark
24-10-2006, 15:54
Just trying to avoid you getting the cheapest, nastiest option and being disappointed. I have other gender changers in that range and they're, shall we say, priced about right. :)

Haly
24-10-2006, 15:55
If it works, I'm really not bothered right now.
Can think about more expensive things when I actually have money coming in. Got better things to spend my non existent money on right now.

Mark
24-10-2006, 15:58
Oh yes, like Nottingham.

I'll have a look anyway. At that price, I don't mind keeping it myself. :)

Mohinder
24-10-2006, 21:50
Er...

The gender changer that came with my official 360 cable is the other way round the one pictured on Amazon, female to female.

Mark
24-10-2006, 22:12
Holy christ. He be right.

Jen, if I convinced you into getting the wrong one, I'll refund you. :(

I get this wrong so often I should know by now. :(

Treefrog
24-10-2006, 22:16
I know where Maplins is Jen - if things go pear shaped I'll pick you one up and get it to you.

Haly
24-10-2006, 23:45
I'll find out when I get it :)
At this rate I should have just bought the official cable lol.

Mohinder
25-10-2006, 20:17
You can have mine if you want?

Haly
25-10-2006, 20:18
How much? :)
I have been half considering it overnight, been trying to shift a DS game to fund it though.
Spooky, DS game shifted lol.

Mohinder
25-10-2006, 20:46
As I said, only the adapter and you can have it for nowt :)

Haly

Ty :D

Haly
26-10-2006, 11:17
The original one from amazon arrived today.
I'm slightly confused as to why they put a very tiny adaptor in a huge box that could fit about 8 books in it.......hopefully they ran out of other packaging :D

Mark
26-10-2006, 12:41
Hope it was well padded. If they used those big air bubble things, you can have fun popping them. :D

Haly
26-10-2006, 12:55
Nope, no padding :( I was disappointed, I was looking forward to popping them ;D

Mark
26-10-2006, 12:57
Damn. So, the $64,000 question. Was it the right one?

Haly
26-10-2006, 12:58
Nope it wasn't, but that's ok now Mohinder's sorting me out the right adaptor :)

Treefrog
26-10-2006, 13:01
Those mahoosive single air bubbles - about 2" x 6" - are superb fun. Wedge one under a car wheel so that it pops when they drive off and watch the driver's face!!!

Haly
26-10-2006, 13:07
Oooh I need to try that on the neighbour's car as he's a bit of a prat :D

Treefrog

From talking to some of the bored people in the distribution centre (I went there a few times for job interviews) it seems that they often try to find the most oversized packaging they can for an item. Apparently it makes the days a bit less dull.

That would certainly cheer me up if I was in a distribution centre - Imagining the reaction of the customer from bemusement upon receipt, to frustration whilst trying to get into the thing and finally a damn good rant about the wasteful packaging manufacturers/suppliers use nowadays :D

I have quite a few of those bags here. I keep some spares in a box just in case. Bit old now but still functional. :)

There was a series in New Scientist about this. The worst one was an SD card (or something equally tiny) in a box big enough for a monitor.

Mine wasn't quite so bad but I got sent an SD card in an unfeasibly large blister pack contained within a box about the same size that ATX motherboards come in

What connectors do you have? One thing I'm not short of is audio leads. :)

A red one and a white one. Like the kind of things you plug into the back of a TV :)

Mark
30-10-2006, 16:54
OK. Figured as much. And you would like to plug them into what? :)

Haly
30-10-2006, 16:59
Having just had a look to see what I can plug them into. I have a slight problem. Won't plug into speakers (nowhere to go).
So erm.....bit stumped :D

Mark
30-10-2006, 17:04
I assume that means that the speakers have non-removable cables? Figures. Many do.

So, you can either use the line-in connection on your PC (requires both PC and Xbox to be on together and the sound that comes out will only be as good as your soundcard unfortunately), or see what's on the other end of that speaker cable. :)

Haly
30-10-2006, 17:08
Yup, nice speakers though :)

Line in connection will be fine, odds of my PC being turned off while playing on the 360 is pretty slim :D

Mark
30-10-2006, 17:10
That'll be a 3.5mm jack then.

I just happened to pull the adapter that I'm 99% certain will be the right one out of my box of bits. Nothing fancy, but it'll do. You can have it for nowt if you can wait until the weekend. :)

Haly
30-10-2006, 17:12
Sure, that would be great thanks :)

Mark
30-10-2006, 17:13
Only problem is it's a short cable (less than 6 inches). If that's fine, then I'll put it in the pile of stuff to bring with me. :)

Haly
30-10-2006, 17:20
That should be fine :) 360 is right next to the PC (obviously with a bit of a gap for heat) and the vga cable itself is really long anyway.

Apologies for resurrecting this thread but considering Dead Rising is useless on our big telly I'm going to have resort to a monitor. We have a few 17" CRTs here at work and I can probably leaf one ;) will I be able to read the frigging text on that and apart form a VGA cable such as one of these (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Xbox-360-VGA-HDTV-Cable-Optical-AV-Output-NEW-UK_W0QQitemZ160068736430QQihZ006QQcategoryZ112846Q QrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) what else will I need?

Haly
08-01-2007, 13:39
Did you manage to sort this Leo?

leowyatt
08-01-2007, 14:34
Well the cable finally turned up this morning so I'll get to try it out tonight. I actually got all the bits on Thursday but had to wait for the cable.

Does anyone know what the xbox looks like in 1024x768? Does it look pants? :( If it does I'll need to grab a monitor from work that does 1280x1024.

leowyatt
08-01-2007, 19:44
Well it is now setup on the TFT monitor at 1024x768 and I have to say I can now play dead rising :D wooooooo! :party2: There is a bit of tearing though that could be down to the screen but so far everything looks good. Just tried gears which was a little dark but I'm sure it'll turn out ok. So all in all...

VGA cable............................................. .£6
Phono & 3.5mm converter.........................£4
Managing to read the text on dead rising..... Priceless
