For all you slackers who haven't realised. The spell checker is really quite good.

I've been using the beta for about a week, upgrade time :D

Awesome :D

It seems to be a fair bit quicker and doesn't seem to use quite so much memory.

Not too keen on the default theme though so I've downloaded the Noia 2.0 (extreme) theme, which is a little better.

Stan :)

Hmm, is it a straight upgrade over the current version?

Daz
25-10-2006, 15:15
It was for me, though the update manager didnt pick it up.

Burble

The update manager is supposed to spring into life sometime tonight IIRC.

Yes.

Power users who open more tabs than can fit in a single window will see arrows on the left and right side of the tab strip that let them scroll back and forth between their tabs.

Nasty. I want multiple rows with fixed width tabs.

Daz
25-10-2006, 15:29
I believe there's an extention for that, I'll look when I'm back at my desk.

Wasn't too keen on that bit either. I have 14 tabs open as my home page but only 11 will fit at 1280x1024 :(

I saw it was out. Not got round to trying it though. Was waiting to see if anyone said there were horrendous problems with it but it sounds good :D

Have they sorted out the memory leak problem? And the other quirk i.e. pushing the " ' " button (apostrophe) sometimes brought up the find function - and scrolling is often crap on it too.

If they've sorted that out I may well go for it - though I've been playing with IE7 and it seems pretty good to me. :embarassed:

Daz
25-10-2006, 16:37
That find issue was sorted ages ago dude :) Memory issues are still here.

IE7 may well tempt me back when it goes gold, but no way am I using an MS beta on a production machine. Gets it's mits everywhere and I value my reliability too much.

Burble

In 1.5.0.7? I still get it occasionally.

Daz
25-10-2006, 16:42
Really? Doze or nix?

I've not seen that since .0.3/4

Burble
25-10-2006, 16:46
'doze. I don't ever remember having that problem on Linux or OS X.

Daz
25-10-2006, 16:54
Wonder if it's profile related. Tried backing up your bookmarks and creating a new profile?

Mark
25-10-2006, 16:59
Not sure what the problem is tbh. :undecided:

I might try FF 2.0 later. When I cba. Also got a NOD32 (Antivirus) trial to download (hopefully it'll kick Norton into touch for good). Going to benchmark it properly to see just how bad things were.

Burble
25-10-2006, 17:01
It was on a shiny new XP Pro installation that I last remember seeing it.

Daz
25-10-2006, 17:01
It's out but soft masked in portage. There are ubuntu packages for edgy but not dapper as of yet.

Robert
25-10-2006, 17:47
Sometimes this can be a pain for me. It'll start up fine and other times it won't start up. I'll then have to use ctrl+alt+delete and end the firefox task.

:undecided:

Mark
25-10-2006, 17:48
Nuke the Firefox profile and start again (you'll lose bookmarks, extensions, etc. unfortunately).

IE7 was released as final last week....
It was well publicised...

Installed the new FF2.0 this morning...
Uninstalled just after lunch...
Still hate it.

I neither recieved a security bulletin nor does my WSUS installation appear to know about it. Nor does it appear to be on Windows update :/

I've got version 7.0.5730.11 on this machine.

Was officially released on the 18/19th

It's not bad at all tbh. First full update to IE since 2001...
I've had a couple of issues but nothing we couldn't work around.

Still prefer Opera though.

Think Firefox beat Opera to the punch with me. I was sick of IE and Firefox was there, for free, at the right time. Just cant get used to Opera now, feels like Firefox just 'wrong' now I'm used to it.

Haly
25-10-2006, 19:36
I used to use Opera for a while, but then Firefox came out and I just preferred it. Personal taste I guess. :)

Will
25-10-2006, 19:36
One thing I like about IE7 is the "preview" pane of all your tabs - that is a nice little feature. It has a lot of cool little things that are quite nice that Firefox has - it's just nice to have something a bit more reliable :embarassed:

Daz
25-10-2006, 19:38
Down to personal experience I guess. I've not seen Firefox crash since the 1.5 RC's. Well, once, but that was down to me using a silly version of the GPL flash module on one of my Linux boxen. Swapping for the macromedia binaries fixed it no worries.

Nice one Daz :)

I'm liking FF2 :)

Another thing I found yesterday is an extension called FireFTP. It's great as it opens up an FTP proggy in another tab/window. Works really well on both the PC and Mac :D

That'll pretty quickly annoy the hell of me, probably enough to switch browsers if there isn't a way to turn it off.

Doesn't present too much of a problem for me tbh. If I'm going to type a reply I'm going in with both hands, so I can easily tap 'end' to reach the reply box.

Sorted. Enter about:config in the address bar. Look for ui.key.ContentAccess and change the value from 5 to 4.

I've never used Firefox.. everyone I've spoke to has always moaned about it? Can't really see it's advantage over IE7?

Daz
26-10-2006, 16:26
Some of the old arguments are gone now IE7 is out (tabs being the most common one). I'm used to Firefox now, the new built-in spell checker is a really nice addition, and it's not as actively targeted by exploits like any browser Microsoft comes up with. It's cross platform too so I get the same experience if I'm in either doze or *nix.

I really much prefer Opera tbh. I can't live without the 'page back', 'page forward' mouse shortcut controls. Although I find myself trying to use them in wondows, IE, Firefox etc as well, then just get annoyed when they don't work. The other thing I like about Opewra over Firefox(Not sure if it can be changed though) Is that if you close a tab, Opera will jump to the tab you were on previously rather than simply jumping to the next tab on the tab bar.

Glad you asked this as I only got round to installing FF2.0 last night, didn't post then (went to sleep ridiculously early) and it's far too early for me to be trying to figure out why things aren't working...

Another fix I've just noticed in 2.0 is that when administrating member accounts in phpbb it doesn't automatically fill 'username' with your username.. thus removing the confusion of "But surely I just searched for and found 'Annyllop21'* so why does it have my name there?"

*yes that was the last bot I deleted from the forum I administrate

To convert 2.0 to the default 1.5 theme, check out "winestyle"....
I'm going to give the new theme a few days though :)

The arrow scrolling for tabs is NASTY. I really want my multiple rows.

Apart from that it seems to be fine. Not sure how the spell checker works though, as I spelt a word wrong here and it did nothing.

You need to install a dictionary.

The British English one is here (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/3366/) :)

There's a beta version of the Tab Mix Plus extension available for version 2, much better than the way FF natively handles tabs.
