The last handheld I got was a game gear back in the day... don't knock it as it had some class games. So I felt that its about time that I got with the times :D

Well i'm impressed so far I have got sonic chaos and it really made me laugh when sonic goes plummeting/jumping from one screen to another. I've had a quick blast of metroid prime and that seems good fun as well.

Using an addon for it, it now plays mp3's and some vids as well. Quite simply a damn good bit of kit and a lot of people in the office already want one.

I'd certainly like one, but after spending out on 5 PSP games recently (I was given a PSP as a leaving present from my last job), I can't really afford one. I've been told they're region free, so when I'm in the US in 4 weeks if I have a bit of spare spending money I'll see if I can pick one up over there as they'll no doubt be a fait bit cheaper.

Yeah they are :)
Mine is a Japanese one because it was cheaper to get hold of than an UK one.
I've got a mixture of UK and US games too as I've imported the cheaper ones.

Advance Wars is a good, fairly cheap DS game to get, only £12.47 at the moment in Tesco (and online) and it's great fun.
Personally I've spent the last few days playing Final Fantasy Tactics Advance on my ds lite. Addictive strategy RPG.

My Mum loves Zoo Keeper but it is a great puzzle game, although the copy here is now officially hers as she got my old ds too. :P

I couldn't stop playing on Piggy's bro's one when we were down there. Some nutty game where there are little games you play and have about 5-10 seconds to complete each one. If you didn't do it you lost a life. Was sooo funny but I don't know what it's called :-/

WarioWare Touch.

it's also Sonic Rush, not Sonic Chaos (that's the name of the emeralds in Sonic 1,2 and 3. think they changed after that!)

love my DS Lite. i want a Nintendog

Get the New Super Mario Bros, if you haven't already. It's slightly weird, in that it looks and feels like Mario 3, but the only items you get are mushrooms or a fireflower - no flying, hammer, koala or frog suits :(.
My boyfriend got his last week and I've probably played it more than he has. The Kirby game is also good fun, I can't remember the full title of it though.

kinda - there are more powerups than just a mushroom and fireflower. you can now get tiny-mario, blue shell and giant mario. although the flying, hammer, koala and frog would be awesome :D

Kirby is called Kirby's Canvas Curse

Jasper
10-07-2006, 06:12
They are only mushrooms apart from the shell, which tbh is pretty useless.

No it's not. It's Kirby's Power Paintbrush, I just asked my boyfriend.

the shell's useless? guess it's a matter of opinion as i find it more useful than the fireflower.

http://www.twobeds.com/upload/userfiles/Sic/DSC00088.JPG

sorry, that's probably the reason i thought it was Kirby's Canvas Curse

Hmmm, played mario for a bit last night. So far i've seen huge mario and the shell addon. I can see your point about the shell being useless, you just hide under it and not much else. Huge mario seems naff, you just stomp through the entire level killing anything... its a quick way to finish a level I suppose.

I may look up the older mario's as the last one I remember actually playing was probably the first one :D

Also had a go of the trauma surgeon game. That seems pretty good, with good use of the touch screen for performing all of the operations.

if you run for a bit, he hides in the shell - a really easy way to knock out a load of enemies at once, and nothing can damage you when you're hiding in the shell.

I bought Yoshi's Island and Final Fantasy Tactics Advance a couple of weeks ago. Yoshi's Island has gone untouched but I can't stop playing FFT:A :D
I am a bit of an RPG nut though.

I just dug out and charged my DS so that I can take it to France with me.

The only game I really got into was Mario DS but I was well and truely put in my place when my 7 year old nephew got a copy about 3 months after me and finished it (collecting all 150 stars) before I'd even reached 100. Little sod.

Aha! I was thinking that he must be able to do that, he wouldn't do it for me though. <- DS n00b

Last I checked, we were in the UK.
why do i sense attitude here?!

last i checked, that box was on my pile of DS games. surely, regardless of whether it's a UK or a US game, if you owned it, you'd automatically assume that the name printed on your game box was the name the game went by? it's not every game that gets renamed dependant on where it was released.

DS is quality. I've never been much of a gamer but now spend far too much time playing Mario Kart. The other games are good, but I really like the online aspect of it. Will get Metroid or Tetris next I think. Can't wait for the Wii either, it looks top banana.

The big question then... what games should I be looking at? Sonic? Mario? Mario Kart (like the online play idea)?

Haly
25-07-2006, 16:32
My personal recommendations:
Super Mario Bros.....yes I've only had it for an afternoon but I know it rocks and will continue to do so :D
Mario Kart is good fun :) Not played it online yet but I really enjoy it single player anyway.
Brain Training is great fun and you can find it for about £12 on ebay. Only tend to play it a little while each day but it still feels worth the money with its strange addictiveness.
Advance Wars: Dual Strike is a good turn based strategy game. I think Tesco Jersey still has it for £12 and some Tesco stores should still do so.
Mario 64 is good but I do find myself mainly playing the mini games rather than the actual game.

I've also got Tetris DS and Zoo Keeper but I find they're acquired tastes. Not hugely impressed by Tetris DS although I've not played it online yet so maybe it's better then.
Zoo Keeper is good fun and strangely addictive, it's bejewelled basically. My Mum has played it every evening for 45mins or so for the last 10 months

I used to have Sonic Rush and I wasn't overly impressed, it just didn't feel like traditional Sonic to me :(

Don't forget GBA games, know you used to have a GBA but can't remember if you sold everything.
I've got Yoshi's Island and Final Fantasy Tactics Advance which are fantastic games :D

Edit: Oh and I've got Harvest Moon DS on pre-order for August and I'm tempted to pre-order Zelda and Star Fox too :D
Ooh and final Fantasy 4 is out at Christmas :D

Daz
25-07-2006, 16:35
I've still got a couple knocking around :D

You can play Tetris online?

[edit]Zelda will be a no brainer, and FF4 probably the same :D

Haly
25-07-2006, 16:36
Yup you can, I've not tried yet though. Waiting till I get the wi-fi adaptor :)
You can borrow Tetris if you like.

Daz
25-07-2006, 16:51
I'm not so bothered, my mother used to play it for hours and hours though, so I may take you up on that. Ta :)

Haly
25-07-2006, 16:52
Hehe mine did the same thing. Bought it mainly for her but it's not weaned her off Zoo Keeper yet :D
I swear that game has subliminal messages to keep her playing.

Flibster
25-07-2006, 16:54
Still got my old GBA flash cart with DS adaptor so will giving that a whirl.

But - Mario Brothers, Mario Kart and any Zelda games are a must. :D

Grrrrr, just spent ages trying to get vix's DS online for her and I got nowhere.

Once I got over the simple hurdles of not broadcasting the SSID and having MAC filtering turned on it all got silly. If I try to use DHCP the DS claims it can't get an IP address whilst the AP says it's given it one (fnarr), if I manually assign an address to the DS it connects to the AP but can't get to the Nintendo WFC from there. :(

Burble
31-07-2006, 22:45
I'm not the only one having problems then.

If I disable WPA on my main AP then I can connect fine, but on the spare one it just doesn't wanna be nice. There should be a few more AP's in my office somewhere which I'll look for tomorrow.

Daz
01-08-2006, 14:15
Hmm, not too many of them about. Well, that people use with their DS's anyway :p Saw a few people have issues with the Symbols which is why I mentioned it.

Other option is ad-hoc it to another device, but that's daft when you have an AP. Hmm.

got the bugger working :)

turns out that the transmission rate on the AP that SHOULD have been auto setting wasn't doing it's job properly, I've manually set it and the DS is connecting now.

Of course if I ever want to run the wireless at more than 11mb/s again i'm back to square 1

/EDIT - turns out 11meg was too fast, down to 2meg now for the time being. Off to look for a firmware update for the AP in the hope they've sorted this :p

Nah, but I wasn't overly pissed off either ;)

I think my friend code should stay the same - I played my copy of Mario Kart on a friends DS Lite and it carried ver the nickname I entered on his machine to mine.. here's hoping.

Daz
10-08-2006, 13:48
I say because when I first set Mario Kart up on the DS, it suggested I dont then go online with it using the same cartridge in another DS. I assumed that was why.

Apparently the going rate is about $110, which comes to about 58 quid.

One snag though (which I just discovered), the chargers aren't dual voltage so you need to factor in another tenner or so for a replacement charger :/

If you have a wireless router then you'll have no bother, bar maybe changing a setting or two. If not then you need a USB Wifi thingy to plug into a PC with internet access.

Finally I have a DS Lite! The first one I got had a dead pixel on the touch screen so after a discussion with the oik in Game about my consumer rights he offered me a repaired DS as replacement. After a bit more discussion of my consumer rights I finally left the shop with a shiny new one without dead pixels.

I'll have a look later and see if my friend code in Mario Kart has remained the same.

I still have all you lot on my roster (plus Blackstar and Holly who I just added) but you'll all need to add my new code and delete the old one.

Burble

The padlock is so that you can't accidently delete someone. If you go into the erase data screen it won't let you choose anyone with a locked padlock.
