View Full Version : Has anyone got... pt 2
Following on from http://www.boat-drinks.co.uk/showthread.php?t=1769
Has anyone got an old AMD chip, anything between an XP-1900 and XP-2700 CPU that they've retired off that I can beg, borrow, steal to get my server back up and running please.
The website I argued so hard to reclaim is hosted on my server, along with the actual radio<>internet gateway itself. It's the first time in over 6 years it's been off :(
I do have a semperon chip nocking around that I found the other day. It was being used in a server, but if wanted you could clock the nuts off it.
Its a 2600 semperon if you want it.

I have an XP1700 if you're really desperate - I even have a motherboard for it, if required. It overclocks really well if needed (I've had it to XP2500 speeds and beyond)
Stan :)
I don't know the sempron CPU, is it pin compatible with the XP-xxxx range? That would probably be a better option than the 1700 I think. I don't really want to swap the mobo unless I absolutely have to as there's software installed on the PC that I need to keep running. Swapping a mobo would probably mean a fresh install of windows and that's really not happening unless absolutely essential.

Depends.
AFAIK both the XP2700 and the Sempron 2600 come in two socket variants.
The XP2700 is socketA (462 pin) and the XP2700+ is socket754.
Likewise the Sempron 2600 is socketA and the Sempron 2600+ is socket754.
Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong.

*confused*
Did AMD ever release anything in socket 754? Thought that was Intel. AMD only did Socket A, 939, and now AM2.

My Friend Matt's socket 754 AMD chip says otherwise :p Can't remember what it is though, plus it sucked...
it was the other way round - Intel didn't do 754, they did 774. And AMD's 754 CPU was a Newcastle. and it did not suck.

This one did...
Then again the system was built by Steve (a few of you will understand this...)
Indeed, Socket 754 was used by the original Athlon 64 chips - the correct AMD order is Socket A, 754, 939, AM2. As for Intel, well in their case it's just complicated. :)
A Sempron, if it fits, will likely need a BIOS update on your motherboard of course.
I know I have an AMD processor in a box at home, no idea what it is off the top of my head though. I'll look later :)

You're forgetting the AMD socket 940 range that they did briefly :)
On the 64's anyway. There were many 940 Opterons :)
Ok, should have said. Its a Socket A semperon. I gather that the only real difference between it and an XP chip is that it has 256k cache instead of 512k.
Still running my Opteron here and sitting at 3Ghz. Only single core but I will probably wait till next year and get conroe (at silly speeds). At the mo i'm not doing it as I would have to upgrade loads of stuff.
There's not going to be any firmware patches for that board, I'm already running a tweaked one to allow tweaking of CPU settings.
I reckon your 1700 chip is my best option so far, Stan.
Now what? :)

You're welcome to it mate - do you want the motherboard as well?
Not sure why your current mobo would need a bios update to switch from an XP2700 to a Sempron 2600 though - maybe Daz can explain? - I would have thought as long as it's socket A, there wouldn't be any problem. They're basically the same chip, just slightly less speed and half the L2 cache
I'm sure you're aware that the XP1700 is considerably slower than your XP2700 but should be more than adequate for a server.
Stan :)
You do have a point Stan. It would almost certainly need a BIOS update to identify it properly, but I cant imagine it would be much hassle to get the thing working.
Ok, I have a Barton here of some description I think. OPN axda20000dut3c stepping 0348upmw. XP2000+ perhaps?

Did a bit of googling, looks like it could be an XP2000+ - which would be better than my XP1700.
Stan :)
It certainly rings a bell too. I dont have a socket A system handy to find out unfortunately :/
You got any Isopropanol Feek? Needs a clean and I'm out :/
I drink IPA for breakfast :)
(that means yes, btw)
PM me an address and I'll do my best to get it in the post tomorrow (need to find something to pack it in :|), though I'm gonna be busy so I cant guarantee it unfortunately.

Green King IPA?
I like Green King IPA, not as good as Wife Beater (Abbot) but still a nice drop.
Most IPAs suit my taste :)
Daz sent me an XP-2000 chip but it's got lost in the post. In all the time I've lived here I can't remember anything I was expecting going missing :(
So, this request is still outstanding, anyone got a spare bug I can beg/borrow/steal?
I'm still trying Feek :( Rang 'em up today but got some pleb who just suggested I try on Monday, which is fine because I'm on holiday now anyway so I can put it to bed once and for all.
Last time I send anything unrecorded. Gutted :(

The XP1700 is still on offer if you can't get anything better - it's currently crunching away at XP2600 speeds (it only has 256Kb L2 cache so isn't the fastest chip in the world).
Stan :)
LOLOLOLOLOLOL
Got home to a note through the door.
"Unfortunately we can't deliver your item because there's a fee to pay"
Today's date: 11/11
Name: Feek
[/] The sender didn't pay full postage
Payment due: £1.52
That means Mrs. Feek will be picking it up on Monday!
Come again?! It's the size of a letter ffs and weighs next to nothing, how could there be a fee to pay?!
Sorry dude, I'll get you a beer in Swansea.

Generally there's a £1 handling fee so they must think it's 52p short on postage, I can't work out postage rates since they messed around with it all anyway
Package collected, fitted to system, same symptoms.
I thought I had a spare PSU kicking around but I don't seem to.
ARSE
I've got a couple of spare PSU's if you need one.
