Now funny that you should say that.... I *think* my mum got one with her lappy. I'll have a hunt. If not then I have a cracked corporate version that you can put on there

Daz

Dont wanna go down that route dude. They'll get all sorts of WGA hassle which they just don't need, especially when they have a legit copy :p

Appreciate you looking :)

What model?

I have them all here at work as well as all the Driver and Utilities CDs :D

I'm pretty sure my CD is XP Pro, being as it's from a Lattitude and all that stuff. Sorry.

If it's a new laptop, I believe Dell now do this CD-less restore thing (which I despise, but there we are). Can't remember how it works unfortunately.

Image based, and still contains the crap.

To MSN Kel :D

Ah, OK. That kind of crap (AOhell and all the rest). I just went on a mass uninstalling spree with my Parentals new PC. Nuking AOhell was the best bit. :D

Thank god they don't install quite so much on the Lattitudes.

My 820 was crystal clean bar Quickset, was very refreshing. Think all the x20 series are like that.

Got 3 lads working on it now ;D

There seems to be a fair bit of clutter on my M1710, I don't know how much of that comes with the thing and how much was installed by the previous owner (I think a lot of it was the latter).

I spent 10 minutes searching for my CD before I remembered mine's MCE :embarassed:

Can't you just install windows XP on it and download the drivers separately? I hate recovery discs usually...

I was going to steal him one of the Dell XP Home OS disks and a Drivers and Utilities CD... but they'd all been stolen already! ;D

To be fair then the licence is valid as long as you (re)install the same O/S on it... Mainly because MS don't care about the actual software but rather the licence for that software.. When I sorted my little sister's laptop I had to call up MS to activate it, they were fine when I said that I'd borrowed a disc to reinstall but it was the same rig that came with the licence... Saying that, my offer is still open Daz...

If nobody manages to find one, I should have a few in the office. Lemme know and I can have a look on the way to/from the hospital tomorrow.

Not without any installation media, no :p

Dym - Without Dell OEM media my key wont work I'm afraid :(

Burble - Cheers dude, might chat to you about it in the week :)

Dell sucks worse than Packard Bell! (this is the first, last and only time you'll hear this... despite it being true)

Mark
11-11-2006, 00:51
Incorrect. Packard Bell suck worse than anyone (except Tiny, but we all know where they went). The OEM key thing is a Microsoft requirement.

Daz, if you'd have gone through Add/Remove and nuked all the crap, you'd be done by now. :)

I can bring you an XP disc - but I've only got Pro. The sticker for the licence key should be stuck on the laptop.

I've done it before using media from random machines, just phoned up and they were fine with it... but bah.

Good luck with it. :)

I have done, but I'd still rather build it myself. So much crap is bound to leave ****e behind.

Needs to be Dell OEM media, not just any old one, else the key wont work. All the big OEM's can lock their keys/media like that.

I'm going to grace the office with my presence on Tuesday so I'll have a look through the pile and see what we've got. I know we had several copies of Dell XP Home but the store room has been 'tidied' since I last saw them so they may no longer be with us.

If I find one, I'll make an iso and PM you a URL unless someone gets there before me.

After a good clear out, I always run Crap Cleaner (http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/) - it's amazing how much crap gets left behind.

I've used it after a clear out and removed over 100Mb of temp files, unused stuff in the registry, browser cache etc.

I think I'll still reformat my PC - eventually.

I suspect 40 months of collected crap would be too much even for that. :)

Clean install > Removing crap from a bloated installation.

I really must reinstall my machine at some point, but I seem to be lacking motivation these days.

Daz
12-11-2006, 20:01
It's never too much bother for me to reinstall my doze machines because of the way I keep them and backups etc, the exception being my media centre. Certain customisations are a pig to get in place again, I've only ever rebuilt it once.

I do like MCE, but Vista has a great opportunity to simplify the system to a large degree, so far as the user experience goes anyway.

I use reg cleaner for that - it seems to work pretty well. :)

Clean install > Removing crap from a bloated installation.

Amen to that! Admittedly I tend to only use desktop PCs that i build myself but even so...

Daz, chances are you can do what I did which is install a clean copy on the lappy and then call M$ (I nearly barfed doing this) and get them to activate it... They only ask if the key has been used on anything else (my reaction was "Er... It's XP Home, you really think I'd install this on anything I wanted to use?") and they'll override the dell stuff...

Will

Hmm I think I will do a clean install sometime... just deciding when..

But the point is I cant iinstall it without Dell media. Or generate my own key, which is just pointless in this case.

But the point is I cant iinstall it without Dell media. Or generate my own key, which is just pointless in this case.

Why?

It's just components.. and I know that the O/S is registered to you (your parents) via Dell, but M$ won't give a flying fork when you activate it... If you need a hand in how to install it then give me a shout...

Daz
12-11-2006, 23:16
Why?
Because they own the software :p

Unfortunately MS (enterprise) licensing is something that I need to have a natural awareness of, so straying into slightly dodgy/grey territory, when I have a good license ready and waiting just with no media, is just daft to me.

I'm with Daz on this, painful though it is. What I do to my own machines is my own business, but I'd never knowingly shove warez on someone else's PC - especially not in the family.

Worst case I'd give Dell support a try, but I'm not entirely sure how helpful they'd be.
