My baby is called Phoenix, I love her and she looks after me...
So here's the question, does anyone else refer to their Rig (without the capital she'd punish me) as a person/gender and am I just a wierdo?

Are you talking about your PC? If so then referring to it by name and capitalising makes you a weirdo, yes. Not least the calling it a 'rig' you don't drive an 18 wheeler do you? If not then you have a PC or a system, not a rig.
Actually a guy I know calls his car Phoenix but he is a bit odd anyway so I'd hardly use that as an excuse anyway. :)
you just a wierdo ......
sorry ;)
I've often though your use of the word 'rig' is a bit odd.
To me, a rig is a wireless transceiver, no doubt it has different meanings for different people. Expect Stan to have a good meaning :)

It's where I work :p
I sometimes use the word to describe a PC but mostly in the DC forums "over there" as it seems to be the done thing - gets a bit confusing when talking about monitoring my rigs from the rig :undecided:
As for names, mine are all named after characters from the Simpsons but this is mostly to identify them on the network and I rarely use the names otherwise - it's difficult to become attached to any one machine when you have a house full of the damn things.
Stan :)
My PC on the network is called pookie, this is because Mic's is Garfield.
Normally it only gets to refered to by any name when its playing up and then its along the lines of "work properly you little s*** or I'll kick you" - oddly enough it does seem to work *touch wood*

I have however named my iPod it is called icapod :p
Nope no names here.... though sometimes it's called something along the lines of:
infernal piece of mother****ing crap piece of **** arse **** bitch of a **** ****er **** ****ing ****ebox bastard thing.

Catchy name that Will.;) I normally refer to my computers as 'rigs'. I don't know why though. My main pc at the moment is called 'X180', the one before that 'Dragon1', before that 'Old purple sides'
I sometimes refer to mine as a rig, mainly due to Folding@Home as Stan's already said - but also since it's a CM Stacker you could bolt 18 wheels on it (well actually it already has 4 fitted so part of the way there already) and fill it up with goods for long distance transportation
As for giving it a name - nope not on your life, I believe the first time I referred to my computer as a female my missus would probably throw me out of the house :p
This machine is currently called X2-3800 derived from the latin for "now getting pwned by Core2Duo's everywhere"
Noisy pos is what my main rig gets called :p
My main pc is called main, my backup pc with all my important stuff on is called backup and my laptop is called..... laptop Go figure.
My Car is called whore because I pay loads every time I use it and get f***** every time

;D
Stan :)
my hard drive in my powerbook is called J5...but i had to name it something - i couldn't leave it as Mac HD
Umm.. unimaginatively, my main PC is called Garp. My 'ickle SFF linux box is called Tiddles.
Always referred to my own machines as rigs, cant remember where that came from. All my machines are named after the core of the chip that's in them. I've had/have Barton, Toledo, Northwood, Yonah, Dempsey, Woodcrest (soon) and Dothan.

Well Phoenix is a Barton, the only decent chip I've had...
She outperforms a dual Xeon system and a 64bit 4000+ system though, which is odd :/
Glad to see other people using the term 'rig' as well :)
For me a "Rig" is a parachute system! So I can never use it for a PC I'm afraid. ;)
The Dual Xeon should easily outperform the Barton though
You'd be surprised. Find a memory bandwidth hungry single threaded application and my money would be on the Barton.

Hmm fair point - it's just my F@H X2's output is not as high as the dual Xeons I've got running it too. I'm just going by that. :)
C2D-based Xeons should give a Barton a bashing, but certainly not P4-based ones. I know to my cost just how bad the memory bottleneck problems are on P4's. :(
Yeah, should have specified Dempsey et al. Woodcrests will nail 'em :)

Oh, the dual Xeon system my rig out performs also has twice as much RAM and has the O/S running off a raptor... Feek knows who it belongs to which might explain why my humble little machine is better :p

Mine are called Leona and Sophie, but I don't actually refer to them as that. It's just what they're called on the network.
No names here. Machine names are just descriptive so I know what is what on the network (Main, HTPC and Bedroom)
My machines are named after Mario characters. My main box is called Mario, the laptop is Luigi and the 360 is called Will, sorry, Princess :D
The naming convention goes to shot when I look at the work laptop, that has the rather unmemorable name of GBMILT0NBXP0075 :/

\o/ :D
My actual PC names are descriptive.
The XP-3200+ system is called XP-3200
The XP-3000+ system is called XP-3000
The XP-2700+ server is called XP-2700
The XP-1700+ system is called XP-1700
You're getting the idea!
Hard drive partition names are a different matter though. On the system called XP-3200 the partitions used to be named Peri, Nyssa, Tegan, Sarah and Leela. Now since I rebuilt that box with less partitions they're called Ford and Arthur.
Hmmm well mine are called
Zirax
Xanem
Zlap
SA
so not really anything interesting i'm afraid.
