View Full Version : I give the ps3's security weeks

Oooops so you have a full install of fedora on the ps3 with all the tools, which allows you to directly access the hardware. So while there is still some copy protection lying around, you could probably hack the ps3 version of fedora that they use to make virtual drives.
For instance open up the unit, unplug the dvd drive and then have a
virtual drive replace the actual drive. From there you can run images of the s/w. Even better than that, disable the dvd drive using software and then you won't even void the warranty
I see this as a BIG balls up by sony, its like handing the hackers the tools and the OS to screw about with the PS3.
Sony are crap at keeping the hackers etc out, just look at the PSP.
haha, i love the psp for hacking. "here guys, have this memory stick slot that you can use to install software to rip our disks and run them from the file. also, be able to remove all unnecessary padding files from games to make them run faster and smoother than they do from the disk".
genius.
I really should look into PSP hacking - I found mine last night so it is getting some use for the first time in about a year.
The psp firmware is completly ripped apart now, you can downgrade/upgrade the firmware so you can do pretty much anything.
The burning of an image to a hdd is already being looked at by the ps3 guys ;)

I dont ;)
I read ages ago that it would be possible to install a linux OS on the PS3, and Sony said as much (http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=23878). Think about it, letting open source devs loose with the Cell processor means could potentially be 'understood' a great deal quicker than if it was only the game devs who had real access to it. There's all this talk about the PS3 becoming a must have device when people know how to get the most out of that chip, and I can think of no better way than letting the open source crowd have a mess with it and the other PS3 hardware.
Could that not mean that they can tweak it and sell it back to Sony for improving the PS3?
But Sony don't like innovation, they forced PS2 chips off the market didn't they?

Not under the GPL they couldn't. Someone could sell services for a custom linux based PS3 OS if they wanted to, but I doubt Sony would be interested ;)

Ah well - long live the underground! :D
I was posting with someone 'over there' (well before it was closed! :p) today about this. They said that the PS3 wont be affected for a while because of the cost of copying BluRay.
My guess is that the PS3 will go the way of the original Xbox, and people will be playing games off the HD.
