View Full Version : Mouse reccomendations
Anyone got a mouse they'd reccomend? Mine, a Logitech Dual Optical, is about coming to the end of its life. The pads are all worn away, including the ones on the side which is noticeably reducing the comfort of it.
Looking at a few sites there are the usual bewildering array of models out there all claiming this that and the other benefit.
What mice have folks got and like? I'm not too fussed whether its wireless or wired really, only requirement is that it must be able to be plugged into a PS/2 port, be it USB into an adaptor like my current one, or direct. Otherwise it won't work with my KVM :D
Still use my Logitech MX700 at home, best mouse I've ever owned but I dont think they sell it any more. At work I have a corded MX518 which is also very comfortable to use.
I've got a Logitech MX510. Great mouse :)
Wired and can plug into a PS/2 port np with the USB adaptor.
It moulds into my hand well, but that does mean it's only really suitable for right handed people.
Definitely try to have a feel of various mice, I know I hate using mice that i'm uncomfortable with.
I've got a couple of Logitech G5's. Nice mouse to use but they screwed up the design a bit with only putting a single thumb button in it.

I have one as well, the single thumb button doesn't bother me as I only used one anyway. It's a nice mouse but whether it works through a PS/2 port, I don't know.

I got very used to using the thumb buttons in games for switching to pre-defined weapons.
It works fine on PS/2 - I'm using one right now plugged into my PS/2 KVM.

Big fan of the Logitech MX1000 myself.
Yet to try the new models though.

Current mouse is my Beloved MX1000 and my spare and previous mouse is a MX510.
The MX1000 can be had cheap these days and is a Superb mouse in every way.
Chordless with No lag, very responsive, lovely shape, extra buttons for FPS assignement = Pwnage. It just roxs to be honest.

well not exactly a mouse but my chosen pointer is one of these (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Microsoft-D67-00005-Trackball-Optical/dp/B00004Y7MT) babies. Never have to worry about flat or clean surfaces :D

Trackballs are Gay ;D All that limp wristed flicking business.
:) Used to have Major funny arguments with an old clan member on COD that used one of these. Basically he is a big Gayer coz he uses one ;D
Our argument was purely based on the fact that if ever at lans we could chuck our mouses at his head but his was stuck to his system.
Head damage FTW ob(;) )viously.
i'll go now :)

Bah! I always found I had better control with one than a mouse, given I was at uni and desk space was rather scarce I found I could stick the trackball on the floor and the keyboard on my lap and I was sorted for the late night coding sessions.

^^ Weird that.
He said the same thing ;D
I used to use a trackball on my Amiga and I seem to remember much preferring it to using a mouse. Now though I can't get on with trackballs - a couple of the KVM's have consoles with trackballs and they annoy me. I keep a USB mouse in the server room and shove it in the front of the server.

don't like it when they are builtin to the keyboard, separate is the way to go.
I still use a basic Microsoft optical mouse. I like the look of the nice logitech wireless jobbies but they don't seem interested in selling mice to left handers. :(
I've got a couple of trackballs somewhere. I had a fad of liking them, but it soon wore off. Mind you, I don't like mice either.
Pretty much any current or previous generation MS or Logitech mouse will do a good job. Not much point spending oodles on a top-of-the-range laser mouse if you're going to shove it in a PS/2 port though (IMO).
I didnt think the MX1000 could be used on PS/2 actually.
System Requirements (http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/details/US/EN,CRID=3,CONTENTID=9043)
* IBM® or compatible PC
* Windows® 98, 2000, Me, XP
* USB or PS/2 port
* CD-ROM drive
Looks like it will work.
My MX700 is quite heavily worn but I wouldnt change it for anything else I dont think. All the ridges on the scroll wheel have worn away, the left button is worn through to the plastic, the rubberised side bit is gone and the logitech logo on the front is seriously faded :p
Cant stand the scroll wheel on the MS mice...
we've got some nice intellimouse optical 1.1a's at work which first introduced me to the joys of the side button. Great for going back through browse history and the like. Only once I'd started using it at work did I start using it on my mouse at home which I've had for about 5 years now I guess.

Logitech G7 here for everyday use and it is great, you don't get a USB-PS2 adapter though so while it should work I have no idea if it does. It is a good weight in the hand and the adjustable sensitivity is a nice touch as are the swappable battery packs.
However the Intellimouse Explorer v3.0 has just been re-released and if I was going to get another wired mouse I think it would be one of them, I'm still using one of my two original editions occasionally though so I doubt I'll be changing for a while. :)
Oops, just got home and it's the G7 I've got, not the G5 :)

I've got an MX900 (wireless) and an MX510 (corded.)
Apart from the fact that the MX900 is bloody useless since it won't charge on the base unit, it's a great mouse - but the 510 is also lighter and more responsive - I love it :)
Aye, I also have an MX700 and an MX900. The 700 is great, it can run for days on a single charge but the 900 needs charging daily. Plus, as you say it's an absolute pain to get it sitting on that cradle in the right position to charge.
I now have my 700 on a KVM between two PCs I don't use much and took the 900 to work where it only needs to last 8 hours or so a day and can get a good overnight charge.

Lucky I didn't call it a G6, like my wireless callsign ;)

Comes with a PS2 adaptor. ;)

Turn the MX900 over and take something metal to the 2 metal connectors on the bottom and just scratch all the crap off. Should go shiny when there's a good clean surface.
Have to do that occasionally to my MX1000. I use a small flat head screwdriver.

Try with a rubber (eraser) first. That'll remove a surprising amount of crap from electrical contacts.
After that, it's fine sandpaper in my case. :eek:
