View Full Version : Would you consider this geeky?

OK, so you have all seen the photos of my room, but here is the bigger picture:

My room contains my desktop PC and a Network Attached Storage box with 1.3Tb of storage space. I have them linked at a gigabit through a netgear gig switch. From this switch, a link goes to a level 2 managed switch on the top floor. That switch is segregated into VLANs, one VLAN acts as a trunk link (over the top of the house) to the second level 2 managed switch serving the front of the house. The other VLAN is for my housemate's PCs (he is a bit, erm, paranoid about network security).

We have our own DHCP server and DNS server and between just two of us we have the makings of a small corporate network...

To top it all off, we have a VPN to a server based in germany that is used to tunnel us whatever local access we want. I have RDP and SSH as "default" but I could add whatever I wanted ad-hoc. SSL Explorer ftw :D

The only think we could do (but dont want to) is to create a domain but our "clients" wouldnt benefit from that really.

All this because there is literally *no* way around some of the security on the cisco the uni has put in our loft :(

EDIT:

Pic of his room:

You cant see the print server and DHCP/DNS server under his bed/out of shot either...

Geeky? Well, I can tick a lot of those boxes and there's only me in my house. Make of that what you will :D

:D:D

*high five*

We have 158 ports of switching (150 of them level 2 managed) for just 12 users \o/

nothing is too geeky to get round uni security :D

we ended up using SSH tunneling to get our web and p2p traffic at uni. I received plenty of emails telling me to stop using so much bandwidth :p

It might raise a smile for me to add this:

By entering your username and password, you are agreeing to the University of Salford's ICT Acceptable Use Policy and Network Security Policy.

You may only connect a computer i.e. Desktop, laptop. You are not allowed to connect, Servers, Server Operating Systems or Services, Wireless Network Devices (i.e. Routers, Access Points), Network Components (i.e. Switches, Hubs, Routers). Wireless Access Points are not permitted in Halls under any circumstances.

Best hide that WRT-54G then...

Servers, Server Operating Systems or Services
I absolutely hate the phrase 'server operating system', because it's all the same really. What would they class my Gentoo/Ubuntu boxen?

Indeed, which is why I have no problems installing whatever the hell I want :p

Internet access is (unavoidably) capped at 60k/sec per port on the catalyst in the loft - nothing to stop switch-to-switch transfers at 10Mb though. Wonder how long it will be before they notice 20Gb/day+ duplexed through "my" port :p

I don't understand bits of that :embarassed:
But I do envy you having geeky housemates a LOT :p

Yeah, gotta say that is a bit geeky for me, I think it is unnecessary that I've got a switch so that I can connect my laptop and PC to the internet at the same time. I'm sure it is an impressive use of kit but it would be way overkill for me and therefore I must deem it overly geeky to preserve my own sanity. :embarassed:

Sounds fairly similar to me when I was at uni all that time ago :p However only 1 hall had internet access as it was still a new thing being plumbed into the halls of residence - and I was working for the computing services there so I was allowed a few perks i.e. servers ;) Furthermore traffic wasn't monitored on weekends. Napster had just been invented to as had DC so we all went a bit mental.

Your set up is somewhat more overkill that we had though. And I like it, and it's not too geeky - it's cool! Certainly if it means you can by-pass the security of crappy uni policy :D

Didn't realise you knew how to do that stuff - we could do with an extra pair of hands here at work!

Im fairly good at being one of those non-geeky geek types :p

Did I mention that over 50% of the machines in this house are either running linux or server2003 enterprise? :D

Will
22-11-2006, 19:59
Why have 1 machine when you can have serveral?! :D:D

It's the best way to learn too really.

Are you sure? Weren't you a year ahead of me? I remember the internet being pretty primitive back then. I can't imagine file sharing being in full swing or anything.

I have PC, laptop, switch hooked up to my halls connection

Me personally, would consider it geeky ;).
If I couldn't do something, generally I just wouldn't do it.. I don't have the knowledge, equipment, time or funds to do anything remotely more tech-savvy than a simple wireless network comprising one off the shelf router.
:p

Pah, we were lucky to have electricity.

If we wanted to phone someone there was a payphone outside. If we wanted the internet we had to go to the computer centre.

Grumble, grumble, in my day I were in the war you know etc......

Thats impressive. I thought I was hardcore using a Catalyst 2924XL for main traffic with a dedicated gigabit link between the 3 servers for backing up. I have to buy an 8 port KVM soon as the K/M/M are taking up way too much room.

I currently have 6 PCs/Servers, 3 laptops and a PSP adding to global warming here.

Mark

Just one monitor/keyboard/mouse here (well, in the home office anyway).

The KVM with it's 15 cables is hidden behind the monitor. :embarassed: :D

If they are near to each other (and not CLI only) take a look at synergy. Might not totally replace the KVM but its damn good most of the time :)

Synergy is a great piece of software - it managed to remove the need for me to have a KVM at home, but then I've only got 1 PC, 1 Mac and a laptop to worry about.

Plenty more than I have. All I have now is 2 lappys and 2 desktops, one for my parents to use. They also have their lappys for work.

Got 2 broadband routers, but nothing excessive. Its just not required any more.

Pah, we were lucky to have electricity.

Electricity? You had Electricity? Lucky. If we wanted Electricity we had to 'op onto this bike attached to a dynamo and battery, cycle for 2 hours and we'd only just have enough to boil a kettle.

Stan_Lite

I have 3 PCs downstairs connected to a bog standard wireless router. There is a cable running from the router to an 8 port switch upstairs which has 7 PCs attached. The two laptops are usually kept downstairs and connect wirelessly (the old one is pretty crap and needs to be practically touching the router to connect).

No heating required in my bedroom :D

The whole lot is connected using a basic windows network - no need for anything fancy chez Bijstan (even if I did have any tech knowledge) - as long as they can all access the web for DC projects and files can be transferred between them, that's all I need.

I have 3 monitors downstairs (1 for each PC) and 4 upstairs shared between the 7 up there.

Stan :)

You were lucky...

When I was a fledgeling we had to go out and find spent bicycles and lick the tyres to get any kind of charge to power things...
