Just booked it 10 mins ago and 11th of December is the day if reckoning  Actually could've booked it for tomorrow morning or any day this week or next week.......There doesn't seem to be anyone taking their driving test around here but me it seems !

So fingers crossed, Mondo is going to be on the road by christmas !!!!:D

I'm booked for a theory test tomorrow but I'm worried as hell. It is supposedly easy but I'm having trouble passing on these mock exams I'm doing :(

Do you have one of those aftermarket CD ? I just did those for a few hours and when it came to the test, about 1/3 to 1/2 the questions came up exactly the same word for word ! Most of the rest of similar in some way, I got 34/35 in the end. I guessed 2, and got 1 wrong.

Bonne chance - tu y reuissiras. :)

A lot of the answers are common sense, but then again you're french so you're not supposed to know how to drive :p

Good luck Raymond - you'll kick ass I'm sure.

The test is booked at 13:08, so hopefully the traffic shouldn't be too bad and the kids will be at school and the mums are at home drinking tea. :p

Did a mock driving test yesterday and it went well, even thou it was in the rain, and in the dark ! With kids everywhere on their bikes with no lights and reflectors...riding very erraticly on the road, one moment a group of 3 of kids started doing wheelies on the road, absolute nutters.

I really wanna past first time, if anything, it's expensive ! £50 for the cost of the test + £40 for the car.

The questions aren't the worrying part. The incredibly subjective hazard perception CD with its awful video quality is the worrying part for me :(

oh that, the guy in the test center told me you can press up to 20 clicks on that, just make sure you don't double click. And click when you think there COULD be something that make you change your speed (meaning brake) and click again when you need to brake. And the quality of the video in the test center is better, its full screen and looks a bit like VHS quality.

HOT DAMN I PASSED THE THEORY :D

34/35 on questions, 53/75 on hazard perception. I count it as pure luck but the guy said that the hazard perception questions on the CD I had were made in general driving, wheras the ones in the test are staged which makes them that much easier :D

Yay!

I had trouble with the theory test disc I had to practice with as it was set in Swansea so I spent more time trying to work out what part of the city it was rather than looking for hazards! Luckily the actual exam one was set elsewhere!

That's a lot of money! I didn't realise that instructors charged for the car too! I learned and sat my test in my mums car :).

Unfortunately they changed the requirements and now you absolutely must have a car with dual controls and the double mirror setup to be able to take the test.

Well at least you've got it booked - you can always ring up from time to time and see if there are any cancellations. :)

I can sort of understand the need for that - it's fairly sensible really.

I still feel people should *have* to clock up certain amount of hours before passing their test, or have to have L plates or something. Over 8 years ago when i did my test I have to say I did find it pretty easy - though my bike test I found even easier - but that's probably because of having been on the road for a number of years. I have no idea how hard the test is now, but that hazard perception is a good idea - I wonder if it helps people realise the potential hazards in real world situations. Certainly when I'm on my bike I'm constantly scanning all that's going on - I've had to do more than my fair share of hard braking when idiots don't think of being observant and step/pull out in front of me.

How are the learners here finding it to drive on the road? Did the hazard perception help at all? Do you feel in control or can you take in all the information? I genuinely believe that it's something that comes with practice - i.e. being able to absorb all the information and process the important stuff quickly and discard the superfluous stuff. However a lot of it is instinctive. I think I'm an instinctive driver rather than a conscious one if that makes any sense.

Anyway good luck with it all I'm sure you'll pass and be cruising the streets soon! ;)

When I did the hazard perception last year, I felt it helped. Made me feel a bit more conciously aware. Not that I was ignoring everything to begin with, so maybe it just gave me a confidence boost.
Nothing like practice though, was hugely different going from always having the instructor there to going out on my own. Scared the life out of me at first ;D Fine now, although my parking's rather crap now, got out of practice due to the dodgy shoulder. Once that's healed up though, I'm planning to practice in a few car parks. Pity really, always got told by my instructor I was great at parallel parking. :(

Going from my experience a couple of years ago it made little difference. My driving instructor was constantly hammering observation into my head though so I suspect that may be why; that and my Dad is Institute of Advanced Motorists trained and routinely passed on suggestions and the like to both my sister and myself. My instructor would constantly ask questions about things I should have observed until it got to be second nature to have seen it.

I actually found it hard to equate the hazard perception test to real life, maybe its because its a video on a 2D screen but I never felt really part of the situation and routinely missed things I would see under normal circumstances; or I'd perceive things as potential hazards that weren't (no bad thing)

Will
04-12-2006, 14:47
I only ever did a practice CD when I was teaching my sister how to pass. I have to say I wish everybody did the IAM test - I did and it really helped pick out things in my driving that I wouldn't have otherwised have noticed. I was asked to become an observer - but I don't think I'm ready for that yet.

It's interesting you didn't think the HP was all that good. I guess the point of it is to introduce learners who haven't been on the road yet or for long about possible hazards. Observation is the most important thing - but you can go over the top sometimes too. It's important when passing your bike test to demonstrate good observation skills. My car driving and IAM really did help from that point of view - but also from the point of view that if you miss something on the bike you could die :p

Thinking about it, I'd argue it would be better to take the theory test and the hazard perception test before you start learning to drive. Just makes more sense in that order.
You should know all that stuff anyway before getting into a car imo, such as road signs.

If you do the intensive courses (which is what I want to do), you have to have taken and passed your theory and hazard perception before they will even book you in.

Haly
04-12-2006, 14:58
Ahh fair enough, I went the traditional route.
I'm not sure if I agree with intensive courses, I like Will's idea of having to be on the road for a certain period. I'm just not sure that you'd be able to learn enough in such a short space of time, besides how to pass the test. And when it comes to driving a car, you want to learn more than just how to pass!

Will
04-12-2006, 15:00
That's all the current test does - teach you how to pass the test. Nothing more in my opinion.

Tak
04-12-2006, 15:02
I learn better if I keep repeating something over and over. If I did a "traditional" course it would take years for anything to sink in.

When I do get around to doing it, I don't really expect to pass first time, its more a way of getting 45 hours of driving experience. I will then book extra lessons depending on how much work I still need to do.

Haly
04-12-2006, 15:03

Yup. I'd agree there. I did the pass plus afterwards though and I'd say that helps, or at least helped me. Although the problem is so much of it depends on your instructor, mine seemed good, he seemed to want to make me a reasonable (I'd say good but I'd never say I was a good driver :p) driver rather than just to pass.
But then again, another instructor might have just been out to get you passed.

Ahh so many pitfalls when it comes to this. There's probably no ideal way tbh, other than of course experience.

Will
04-12-2006, 15:03
I only had 2 lessons :embarassed:

I was lucky, I spent some time with my parents, but also spent 4/5 years driving in the fields in my grandmother's home in France (she has acres and acres of land) - so that helped, all I needed to learn how to do is to do it on the road without killing people.

I had loads of lessons, again because I couldn't drive anyway else. I liked my instructor though so that was ok, any man who blames Final Fantasy 7 for the collapse of his first marriage is ok with me ;D

Personally I feel that I didn't really start driving 'properly' (being really aware and making the decisions) until after I'd passed my test and was driving by myself. That's where I feel I really started learning. Before that it seemed to be more about how to operate the car and avoid being killed by obvious things!

oh well, failed !

3 majors

1 - wrong gear when i was trying to straigten the car up.
2 - was going 30 in 40, must've missed the sign
3 - apparently it was my right of way in a junction, there was 2 buses opposite road in a crossing, I was going left. the 2 buses were going right into the same road I was going to. The first bus went and I was supposed to go before the second bus even thou it was already sticking out into the crossing....

Can't argue with the first 2 but the 3rd one was very iffy i thought.

I didn't see the 40mph sign, it was a residential area with lamp posts either side so i thought it was 30mph. If i had been going 35 it would've been fine.
