View Full Version : Help oh mighty PC personages!
My pc is made up of castoffs from my ex's pc. I know NOTHING about it, other than it's black with a funky blue light on the front.
It makes a noise when it's been on for about 10 minutes, kind of like a anaemic ambulance which I understand means its overheating. To be honest I ignore it :embarassed: nothing has blown up yet and its been doing it for months. But I do notice it's getting a bit slower in it's old age poor thing. Also, I'd like to get some speakers (at the moment I have to have stuff reeeeally loud so I can hear it from some headphones which are on the desk...I cant put them on because then I wont be able to hear when Daisy starts dismembering the gerbils) but I cant have speakers cause then I'll hear that noise all the time which will drive me nuts.
My question really is what is likely to be making it make that noise? And how do I make it stop it? And dont report me for pc abuse, I weren't me guvner!
Throw it out the window, it'll stop beeping then.

You;re about as much use as a fart in a bloody spacesuit you little oik! :poke:
It could be the fan on the CPU cooler either failing or in need of a clean.
Download something like SpeedFan and try and find out what specifically is overheating, we'll go from there :)
The facts in combination suggest the fan on the CPU cooler is either caked in dust or has stopped working. :(
Here (http://www.almico.com/speedfan431.exe)'s the SpeedFan link. Install it, run it, grab a screenshot and post it here. We'll be able to confirm the diagnosis. :)

The noise is probably coming from the PCs internal speaker so adding speakers may not amplify it.
My suggestion with the overheating would be to clean the heatsink on the CPU, just take the side off and give it a hoover, or call Huddy, I'm sure he'll use his 1337 PC repair skills for the price of a cup of tea :)

Yep my guess is a combination of 1. the fan has copped it on the cpu cooler or is full of dust and 2. it'll be from the internal speaker as Matt says.
In most motherboards you can have a warning when the cpu temp goes over a certain value. This is a two-tone alarm that goes off. If you venture into the bios you will be able to turn this off and ignore it for a bit longer. The downside is if its anything bad, then it could cook the cpu :)
How do I take a screenshot? :embarassed:

the noise is coming out of the headphones, not the actual computer bit
Depends on what packages you have got.
You press print screen which is the little button next to the F12 button on the top of the keyboard.
Then go into Word or something and press ctrl-V
voila, and the work is done :)
Just had a thought as I had something similar in my old pc. Go into volume control and mute:-
Microphone
Line In
Aux
Then let us know if it goes away.
Load up MS Paint
Click on the SpeedFan window.
Press and hold Alt, then press Print Screen (PrtScn), release Alt.
Click on MS Paint.
Edit menu, Paste. Check you now have the image in paint.
Save the file as a PNG.
Upload. Post.
Should work. :)

I've not really used speedfan so I can't remember what is the cpu/northbridge temp. However that be a little hot, hence the fire symbols next to the temps :)
Do you find that it crashes fairly often as well?

Bleedin 'eck that does not look healthy, Speedfan isn't always correct though so it might not be as bad as all that. Temp1 is normally the motherboard temperature I believe although you can alter which one it picks up first, Temp2 is normally the CPU which at 82C is way too high(65C is normally about the safe operating limit depending on the CPU model), have you checked to see if the CPU cooler is covered in dust, or indeed if the fan is still spinning? The others are right when they say the speakers won't affect the beeping, it is an internal speaker(you could disconnect it since you ignore it anyway although I probably wouldn't advise this). If you give the CPU cooler a quick clean with either an old toothbrush and some lung power or better yet a can of compressed air then that should help a bit with the temperatures.
If you aren't sure what you are doing though then I reckon asking Huddy over is your best bet.
Nope no crashes at all.
I'll have a look at taking the lid off tomorrow :/ Poor pooter.

Karyn, when I get round just before next year then I will look at your rig (my word, others take the piss for me calling it that) and I will stop it making noises... I promise :)

Woohoo! \o/
But what about my computer?

Well I s'pose I can look at that as well ;)
Yeah, that's a good point. You'll have a house full of geeks at the end of next month, but given that temperature reading it'd be a good idea to do something about it sooner if possible. Don't want a cooked CPU now - that could get expensive.
Do you know what type of Motherboard you have Pebs?
Ill be able to tell you what each of those temps are for if you can, that will at least tell you whats hot. :)
Er....no. How can I find out?
Mic says cpu-z

Pebbles or the PC?
Did you know that a PC is one of those areas on a woman that makes them wriggle their toes !!

Pebbles or the PC?
Both.... Of course!! ;D
I think so. I opened the case and waved a hoover at it for a few seconds. I either broke the thing that makes the whining noise ar I fixed it :D Either way, Im an electrical genius!
fancy doing that to my house? ;)
I can come and wave a hoover around in there for a few seconds if you like. Due to my recent success in this field my consultancy fees are fairly heftly though :D
