View Full Version : I'm in the market for some portable speakers...
... But they dont need to be particularly tiny, nor be able to run of batteries. I love my laptop, it's great. But my god are the speakers awful. Any sort of volume and there's distortion, and the general quality of them is pretty darn poor even at low volumes. Doesn't affect what I use it for most of the time of course, but there have been/will be occasions where using it for various media on the move would be handy.
Dont suppose any of you audio type people could point me in the right direction? A decent brand would be a good place to start :)
It depends how much depth you want - you can get desktop speakers which will be separately amplified and sound pretty decent, or get some which are passive which obviously won't sound quite as good.
Here's one from Logitech I've used before - they're not bad, not hifi quality, but they're better than laptop speakers.

Altec Lansing do a decent range of stuff,

I had a pair of XT1 USB speakers - they were pretty decent and didn't need batteries, and were loud enough to fill a hotel room without distorting. Unfortunately I dropped one in the bath and it er... never really recovered :( They were not by any means phenomenal - but they did a decent job. My current laptop actually has decent speakers, but they just don't go loud enough - oh it's decent in volume, but not loud enough to make you want to turn it down...
Then you start going onto iPod accessories and you start paying a premium for it or desktop speakers which then become less portable or more of a pain.
Cheers dude, gives me somewhere to start :)
You know, those XT1's can be found for half the price on their site now, and the reviews look great. Think I may order a pair :)
I really liked mine - chalk and cheese compared to laptop speakers and very portable too. :) As I said they're not phenomenal, but definitely a vast improvement of laptop speakers - plus they are USB powered too which is always nice.
Ordered, I'll let you know how I get on :)
I've been meaning to get some portable speakers for ages. The speaker (yes, singluar) on my D400 is utter crap so I usually use my earphones when watching DVDs.
If I bring my laptop to Swansea I'll bring these too so you can have a butchers.

Putting them through their paces now, really impressed so far. The quality is excellent and the volume more than I was expecting. I've not pushed them as far as they'll go yet because they're just loud enough :|
Hopefully I'll bring them next week to get me in the mood when I'm getting ready :D
I'll request a demo too. If they're more portable than my Creative portable speakers, then I may be interested. :)
