View Full Version : Good wine bad wine *result!*
We were given three bottles of wine as the result of a divorce, the last few bits and bobs that didn't get fought over. Nothing special, just a few Chilean whites but they were free and I do like my wine. Only catch was they were kind of unknown origin so we didn't know if they would be ok to drink or corked.
Anyway, two bottles were corked but one is ok so I'm enjoying that one now. Result! 13% which is strong for a white but you wouldn't know because it's quite mellow. And it's hitting the spot :embarassed:
I'm drinking Christmas Ale from a pub near Maldon which brews its own. After that I shall have a bottle of BlackBeery Beer from the same place and then....
.... then I'll have run out of beer :(
I so wish I knew about that place when I lived near Maldon!
I have a bottle of wine and a bottle of Magners in my fridge, but I'm desperately trying to resist. Firstly my liver is waving a little white flag at me after the past few days (my box of Magners has disappeared! I must have alcoholic rodents or something), and Von is due any moment, and I dont have a good history with me seeing him while drunk!
I've got 2 lovely bottles of Wolf Blass Cabernet Merlot sat in my kitchen waiting for when Paul is here over xmas.

The Prince of Wales at Stow Maries, do you know it?

Bought too nice bottles of wine today and we have a bottle of Beaune waiting to be drunk :)
I've decided that life is too short for cheap wine and as I have cut back I can afford to try the more expensive bottles :) There is still a place for JP Chenet though :)

I have developed a taste for Chilean reds I must say. Whites I don;'t know much about as I find them less appealing/interesting, and hence am happy to drink whites from around the world. Reds I'm far more selective of still.
I'm not a fan of reds at all. Too potent for my taste. Whites, on the other hand, I'll gladly partake of when I don't have to worry about getting home afterwards and am not in a 'wimp out' mood.
You do have to develop a palette for it - just like coffee, tea or any flavour of foods and drinks. Obviously from a young age I was introduced to wines so I enjoy them somewhat - probably more as a force of habit now though :embarassed: Whites are nice in the summer or as a light drink or aperitif, and some select whites are great with poultry and fish. Personally I need a bit of crunch and body on my wines, whites tend to be to limp for my tastes - though some nice dry whites can knock out the taste buds very well and get saliva gland juices flowing. Not a big fan of very sweet desert wines either.

It's ok I'll drink it for you :D
I must just be odd as I like both white and red wine. I'm still getting into my whiiiiiiiiiiine as I don't have anyone to drink it with :( My parents and sister don't drink so I don't really have that much of an opportunity to drink it. I do try and stick to more expensive wines just out of preference (8 pounds minimum) so that I don't get a nasty bottle :)

It's the things I do for my friends - it's tough but it's worth it ;)

Me neither. Medium/dry is my preference.
PS - for the Essex locals (or indeed for anyone else), I can recommend New Hall (http://www.newhallwines.co.uk/). :)
The Prince of Wales at Stow Maries, do you know it?
Yes it was Stow Maries I was living iirc, the place with the cool country/farm shop. I had a completely barmy landlady. I was working early shifts at GEC in Basildon during the summer so it was an excellent drive back home, grab some shorts and head for the sea at Maldon after work. I really miss those days.
I love red wine but it gives me mouth ulcers :(
Really? I get them from acidic stuff like orange juice but been ok with red wine. Just as well I guess :D

You had me seriously worried there for a few secs, New Hall is a private girls school / college over near Sainsbury's near the boreham interchange.
Bloody long driveway as well to make a getaway down *whistles*

They used to be one of my customers when I was out on the road still, many years ago. I remember going there on the last day of term one year and they were doing a St. Trinians thing.

Oh yes I know exactly what you mean. Back when I was in college you would often find me over there. Gotta find out where they all hang out once they have gone through uni ;)

I was aware of the possibility of misinterpretation from the Google search I did before posting. Hence the link. :)

We have 2 bottles of Chaucer's Mead we brought back from Monterey which haven't been drunk yet. I think we'll crack one of these open over the crimbo period especially now we have a slowcooker in which to heat it up :)
I know sweet FA about wines except I don't like red or dry :embarassed:

Booooooo. Ah well, more for me! :D
Red is definitely an acquired taste. Used to hate it but now far prefer it to white.
Mmmm full bodied reds and very dry whites (which Janet doesn't like, yay, more for me!)

My mouth is watering thinking of the bottles in the kitchen.
Mmm I'm thinking about wine now. You can tell it's near the end of the day :D
I'll knock off the remains of the Port this evening... Mmmmmmmm

Naturellment.
The Croft Platinum Port on offer in Sainsburys is good, I'll recommend that. It's about £6 iirc. Good value bottle but goes down a bit too quickly.

I'm going home via Sainsbury's then, I fancy some port after all this talk.
