View Full Version : "Inaccessible boot device" BSoD ?
Right then, here's the score.
As you may remember, I had a system go titsup.com a while ago. Replacing the CPU didn't do any good, neither did swapping the PSU.
So, I managed to get my hands on another PC. One of better spec, but less RAM.
No matter thought I, I'll transplant my good working hard drive into it, boot to safe mode and load new mobo drivers, boot to Windows and reload all the other drivers.
*tilt*
Windows starts booting, then I get an Inaccessible boot device blue screen of death.
Anyone know of a way I can get around this and persuade Windows to boot? It's Windows 2000 Professional, fully patched.
I really don't want to have to trash it and start again.
Repair install, which is about the same thing. It's probably a different disk controller and Windows needs to know about it.
There might be some horrid options with the recovery console but I'm not sure.
In which case I'm better off with a different drive, doing a clean install on there, adding my drive as a second one, reinstalling apps on the main drive and copying configuration stuff from my existing.
Both are nasty options :(

I like feek's idea tbh...
Doesn't 2k have the '3 component rule' thingy like XP though? as in change more than 3 and it believes it to be a different system and so won't boot/is nasty/tells you to bugger off?
Paul says 'they should just go for a new install. the OS locks on to the operating system. you can use the same boot for the same class CPU but not cross platform. it's to do with drivers for the core components.'
Which I hope means something to someone as it meant bugger all to me!
Dym, no. Roberta, it's a very different platform, AMD to Intel.
*sigh*
I'm with Daz, it's probably trying to use incompatible disk device drivers. I've never yet got Windows to survive a mobo change. Reinstall time. Sorry.

It's the techie version of what I said \o/

Definitely, definitely reinstall. Don't even bother looking into other avenues, it's a world of pain, especially on 2k.
I don't think the fat table or the partition is knackered.

Indeed. That'll be a SMP to Multiprocessor kernel change. Nasty. Horrible. A reinstall is at least five times quicker and has a good chance of success at the end. I know which I'd choose.

Windows cannot load driver for disk controller on boot device, or the wrong driver being used. Could also be that the disk controller was conflicting with some other hardware on the system.
It might be worth booting step-by-step to identify the offending item and check for any conflicts.
worth a try before the big re-install.
The whole system architecture has changed dude. Solving the disk issues might be possible, but you've then got to deal with kernel and chipset issues after that. Just not worth it.
1) Put original drive back into PC
2) Install Windows 2000 and patch
3) Put drive from broken system into PC
4) Install applications
5) Copy appropriate directories from second drive to appropriate directories on new main system drive
6) Copy stuff from two partitions of the second drive onto another PC
7) Format second drive as one partition
8) Copy stuff back
9) Tidy
*sigh*
