I've been listening to Nightwish almost constantly since I got introduced to them about 2 weeks ago. Finnish 'symphonic rock' band, well worth a listen if you haven't heard anything from them
I have to be in the mood to listen to Nightwish, but I do like them. I've got 'Once' here and a few other albums on order.
And in the background that ruddy hamster game....
The hamster music can be turned off, but not the sound effects. :)
Discovered after I'd heard it for the eleventy millionth time. :)
I have my player on random, and most of the stuff on it is compilations, so 'random' fits the bill nicely.

Would I be sad if I said 'Happy Together' by the Turtles just came on and I knew the entire song off by heart?
Currently Bond theme tunes (bit of tom jones at this exact moment!).
All sorts of crud I've got :D
Currently listening to Jamiroquai - You give me something, a nice chilled out track while writing test scripts.
Feeder - Just the way i'm feeling
Its actually a very good song for right now :)
I've installed last.fm it's actually quite cool. I can't quite believe the range of music I listen to! It's impressive how much crap I have (random play on iTunes) I'm always finding new tracks that I didn't know I had (I've got nigh on 11k tracks!!!). I don't have one particular taste in music really, I love stuff from classical (I really love classical music), to rock, to hip hop to trance to pop... I just love music in general.

Hasn't Tara got an absolutely suberp voice?
My supervisor seems to have selected the most random playlist ever. In the past hour I have listened to:
Hall & Oates - Maniac
A couple of Lord of the Rings soundtrack tracks (Two Towers I believe).
Green Day - American Idiot.
Green Day - Boulevard...
Weird Al Yankovic - That Star Wars/American Pie parody
The theme from Smokey and the Bandit.
The theme from the Mysterious Cities of Gold.
I'll keep you posted...
I've got the flat to myself for a week so its Peats' Kareoke!
Ian Brown - F.E.A.R
Bloc Party - Blue Light
Jeff Buckley - Last Goodbye
The Smiths - The whole of 'The World Won't Listen'
Muse - Feeling Good
Datarock, The Delays......
Feel sorry for my neighbors!

Pretty certain I have mentioned them before, but i'm listening to Lifehouse - everything.
The song has certainly been used in films before now, but I can't remember which ones.
I'm working my way through a bunch of CD's that I picked up at the weekend. Currently playing is 'A Home In The Rain' by a Dutch band called A Days Work (http://www.adayswork.nl/) who performed a cracking set on Saturday night.

This week I have been going through a random phase, downloading all sorts of odd stuff from Napster.
Listened to:
Mika. Very interesting, album is allright, probably about as quirky as could be expected having heard Grace Kelly. Nice selection of songs, doesn't just do the same song over and over unlike some artists. Jury is out on him though, I'm not a fan really, but its not bad.
Corinne Bailey Rae - Pretty good album, rather more acoustic than I was expecting and shows a diverse taste in music.
Without Grace - Nice and heavy alternative thing going on here. Lyrically solid, musically satisfies my cravings for heavier stuff. Well worth a listen IMO.

Limp Bizkit :D Significant Other and a few selected tracks from other ablums.
Just listening to The Fray's album. All seems a bit floaty and samey for my liking - 'How To Save A Life' is by far the standout track. Haven't listened to all of it yet, and this is only the first run through so maybe it'll improve.
I've been meaning to get that album as I quite like How to Save a Life, but I did wonder if they'd be an one track band so to speak.

Yeah, the verses could have been so much better lyrically but the chorus speaks volumes to me. As such I really like the song overall. In fact it's one of my favourites of the year so far. It's a real shame that the rest of the album is a bit of a non-starter.

This week I have mostly been listening to Rick Witter & The Dukes - The Year of the Rat. If you liked the Shed 7 album I posted a few months back then you'll definitely want this, it's basically more of the same excellence. You'd be forgiven for thinking it was actually Shed 7 because they of course have the same frontman, and the songs are just as good.

Random old faves played on my phone through my house system, all stolen & downloaded via the interweb. Marvelous
Fave tune of the mo is the tune from Pulp fiction, it's the tune they play when Jonny T takes that bint home who gets ****ed up by sniffing smack. That tune roxs my world.
I AM A PIRATE, Pikey the Pirate, i like it
I like Snow Patrol lyrically, and musically to an extent, however I was getting bored by the end of their last album; much like I did with Keane's first album. The sound was just getting repetitive (Snow Patrol seem to like that "down strum only, on the beat every beat" thing; Keane just had that piano thing going for the entire album)
Hopefully their next stuff will show a bit more variation in style :)

Found an album a while back that I used to have on vinyl back in my college days and downloaded it. I just found it tonight whilst rummaging around in my music folder so I thought I'd give it a bit of a listen for the first time in about twenty years.
The album is "From her to eternity" by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.
Christ almighty, I used to listen to some weird stuff back in the day
First track is a Leonard Cohen track called "Avalanche" - and is trés strange. I Googled the lyrics for the song and it's actually quite a well thought out song which Cave manages to mangle in his own inimitable style.
I'm currently listening to a rendition of the Elvis standard, "In the Ghetto" which he, thankfully, doesn't mangle.
I'm looking forward to "Wings off flies" - one of my favourites :D

I've got such lovely memories involving Simon and Garfunkel music. :)
My current memory of S&G is the camp over at Mister Fakesnakes....
We had consumed vast amounts of alcohol and I had basically passed out into my sleeping bag (after a nice back massage from Dymmy boy!) and within a few hours I realised there was music playing...
... it was Fakesnakes ipod player on loop - one of which was "bridge over troubled water". After about an hour of listening to the same songs again and again (along with intermittent snoring ;)) and being unable to move an inch due to my alochol consumption, I finally managed to crawl out of our section (over picky... think I kneed him a bit) then flop over Belmit and roll over to the pod and turn it off.
... as much as I love S&G... it was heeeeeeeeeeavenly for it to stop. ;D
Awww. Belmit and Garpy looked sooo cute all huddled up in their sleeping bags.
I think I was uber drunk. ;D
I still had my pirate bandana on!
And not much else.

Tommy Johnson.
He's a very old Blues artist. Don't have a CD of his work - listening to a very old a probably quite fragile now 78. Don't know the album name as its not labelled but has a handwritten sleve - Johnson, Tommy - 1931 - 83rpm
Unfortunately, I haven't got a speed variable 78 player.... *it's on my list of things to do - fit a decent motor and a large variable resistor to adjust the speed* so it's slightly too slow.
Still fantastic though.
It appears that these tracks were recorded between 1928 and 1929 though.

Jive Bunny The Album :o
Just arrived after I bought it for peanuts on ebay :) I remember when it first came out, I got the tape for my Birthday with a clock/radio/tape player. The Radio I still have, the tape box I still have.
This album made me interested in older music, and it's been a good decade since I last heard the "mastermix" of it!
CHEEEEEEEESSSSSEEEEEE!!!!!!!!
Most people are able to say they bought something cool as their first ever album. I shamefully have to admit that Jive Bunny was mine :p It's probably still stashed away with a load of other tapes at mums somewhere.
Just been trying to think. I do believe this was my first album too ;D Everything before then was compilations made from other people's borrowed tapes.

Can I be controversial and say Coldplay's first album was the best, and by the 3rd they'd started to run out of ideas?

Fix You - the ultimate love song :) Was there when they made the video to that \o/ Was a-may-zing.
Swallowed by the Sea is fab too.Yes it is. So Bolton was it? Must have been quite an experience. Whenever I go home on the train I always play this album first. As the train pulls out of Manchester, Square One seems such a beautiful song to me.
Think my fav has to be The Hardest Part but the last three songs are just wickedly good!
Can I be controversial and say Coldplay's first album was the best, and by the 3rd they'd started to run out of ideas?Hmm no! :D
First album was probably their best in terms of being raw and non-commercialised. X&Y is probably my favourite but it is more commercialised. :D
MarcLister
19-02-2008, 21:09
not controversial, just wrong. :) It was more raw, more untouched, but experience and maturity bring something of a different class to Martin's voice and lyrics. I don't think anything on Parachutes can match Fix You, Clocks, The Scientist, etc etc etc. Can't disagree with that. So favourite Coldplay song?
If I was pushed I'd say Clocks. :D
MarcLister
19-02-2008, 21:18
Hmm I know what you mean. The Scientist is good as is Fix You. Coldplay have so many good songs it is very hard to choose a favourite. Have you ever seen the video of the old guy singing Fix You? Was meant to be a duet with another guy, both of whom were suffering heart failure. Unfortunately one of them died before the video was filmed giving the video an extra emotional edge and some of the dead guy's family can be seen in the vid crying.

How a classic like Fix You can be classed as 'running out of ideas' just staggers me.
Ah, I didn't say they didn't still have moments of greatness. I'm not going to win this one, and I won't try to, but I do think Parachutes was more exploratory in terms of the way the songs are written and 'built'. X & Y, IMO, is a bit more like the Chris Martin show with a studio band.
And the best Coldplay track is clearly Yellow :)

Clocks and The Scientist were on Rush of Blood though weren't they?
I tend to agree with Pvt Pyle as in many ways Speed of Sound was Clocks the remix and given the coice I'd listen to Parachutes over X&Y.
Clocks is just about the perfect pop song though so I can understand trying to write another like it.

Currently listening to the album "Very Best of Jethro Tull" by (oddly enough) Jethro Tull. A splendid blend of folk and rock with a little blues thrown in for good measure - niiiice :)
With some surreal and amazing lyrics:
Roots To Branches
Words get written. Words get twisted.
Old meanings move in the drift of time.
Lift the flickering torches. See gentle shadows change
the features of the faces cut in unmoving stone.
Bad mouth on a prayer day, hope no one's listening.
Roots down in the wet clay, branches glistening.
True disciples carrying that message
to colour just a little with their personal touch.
Home-spun fancy weavers and naked half-believers
Crusades and creeds descend like fiery flakes of snow.
Bad mouth on a prayer day, hope no one's listening.
Roots down in the wet clay, branches glistening.
Roots to branches. Roots to branches. Roots to branches.
In wet and windy priest-holes. Grand in vast cathedrals.
High on lofty minarets or in the temples of doom.
I hope the old man's got his face on.
He'd better be some quick change artist.
Suffer little children to make their minds up soon.
Bad mouth on a prayer day, hope no one's listening.
Roots down in the wet clay, branches glistening.
Roots to branches. Roots to branches. Roots to branches.
Roots to branches. Roots to branches. Roots to branches.
