View Full Version : Networking things
We're getting NTL on Thursday, which I believe involves having an NTL modem. We have 2 computers. Can we plug the two into this modem, or could we get a router?
I know NOTHING about networking, so any help would be greatfully appreciated. Not keen on the idea of having one machine as the server running all the time because of electricity costs and the annoyance of having a machine humming away in the corner all the time.
Given the (lack of) cost involved and your stated requirements, your best bet would be to get a router. Make sure to get a cable-compatible router and not an ADSL version. I'm not the most up-to-date regarding the best models, so hopefully someone else can complete that part.
How do those NTL modem boxes work? DHCP? If so could they not just get a switch? If not then as Mark says just get a Router (they often have numerous LAN ports) and you can all be connected up. If you want to go wireless that's also a possibility. :) I'll come and help you do it for free... or maybe just a cup of tea... Or a bit of a grope... or....

I have a spare one here which does wireless and CAT5 and a PCI network card you can have.
It came free from Blueyonder so it does cable

We're on NTHell, yes you do get a modem and we have the modem going into a router to run the two PCs
You get one IP address per connection, assigned (usually) based on the MAC address of the cable modem. So you'll need something to do NAT and allow that single IP address to be shared - hence the need for a router. :)
Of course, if people are offering them for free, so much the better. :)

I have a network card because we were on a router at my parents house, but I'm not sure whether Leon does. Thank you very much for the offer :). Will the router work with the NTL modem? No idea how this thing works. I assume we plug it into the modem and it just keeps it all online all the time so we can just turn on our computers and be instantly connected.... sorry if this is completely wrong :embarassed:
Nope, that's spot on. Just leave the modem and the router on (well, if you want to), and they will be ready to go when you turn a PC on.
Right, time to surrender the internet again :( Will be back on Thursday, probably on Leon's computer :) Thanks for help so far guys... keep it coming!

Cool :D Thank you! Sounds perfect :)

That'll teach me to faff about taking photos of things, she's gone now :(
Anyway

Its a WRG614, you just plug the modem into the 'internet' port and the computers into the LAN ports or you can use wireless :)
You may notice I was trying out a low f stop to reduce the DOF, seems to have worked quite well :)

That hardware will do nicely, so long as BY haven't messed with the firmware on it (unlikely).
And yes, nice DOF there. :)
I remember a while back you had to clone the MAC address to "trick" the cable modem into thinking it was still plugged into the PC it was set-up on... Do you still need to do that? I have used a cable connection for a long time.

Nope :)
Modem carries the MAC and router plugs into the modem

Oh I know how it works, I just remember some services didn't like having routers in place and hence had the "clone MAC address" option in the router to trick the modem.
This was about 5 years ago though. :)
Yeah, you're right, you did. Some routers still allow MAC cloning for that reason. I don't think NTL/BY are so anal about that sort of thing these days though.

I've been swapping around my PCs over the weekend while I fixed various bits of 'em, and all I had to do was reset the modem for it to pick up the new MAC address of the NIC it was connected to - no need to tell BY like the old days (few years ago now) :)
I had to clone my laptops mac address when by came round and installed cable. They installed the software on my laptop, and to get the net to work I had to clone the address. Now it lets anything connect though.
Cant offer a cable router, but I have network cards coming out of my ears :)

Be more comfortable to keep 'em in a box :)

BY aren't, but NTL are. You can have upto 4 different MAC addresses 'registered' within a 24 hour period.

And of course with the NTL merger.... Still, shouldn't be a problem.
I miss the good old days where networks and the internet were only for the l33t. *sigh*

late to the table :p but yeah what MB has is the best thing to use :) just plug your modem into the WAN port in the back and you're ready to rock
EDIT: just found out our wireless router isn't compatible with the DS lite :(

Not strictly true I would think. The wireless encryption you've selected is probably the issue. I take it you're using WPA? DS's only support WEP but I hear rumours that a future update will bring in WPA support.

There is no encryption on it, the DI-514 is simply not compatible :(
EDIT: if you google for it you'll see people have had problems for it. See here (http://www.nintendowifi.co.uk/customersupport/r
outerSelect.do?manufacturer=D-Link&router=%2Frouters%2Fen%2FD-Link.DI-514+%28version+a+-+b%29.ENG%2FD-Link.DI-514+%28version+a+-+b%29.ENG.html) :'(
then again ;) I might have sorted it :D
then again :( updated the firmware and it's not working
I realised after heading out from the hotel that I also had an AP that simply wouldn't work with my DS. Sodding thing! I ended up running my NAT on my Mac and connecting the DS to a WEP 'encrypted' network running from the Mac but only having that running when I needed to get the DS online.

information which will make Kitten happy
Any chance you get let me know if I could do this on my iBook?
That's a point. I'd forgotten about the Airport card in the Macs. Sadly I know very little about Mac networking beyond what's in the network settings box. :(
I'm impressed with your DOF use ;) :D
So I plug the modem into this, and then run network cables to the computers?
Better get a big long cable for my computer upstairs :D
Merci buckets Matt.. and everyone else. You've been reet helpful!! Is it OK to pick the router up at Swansea? My computer won't be up and running for another week or two anyway :) I owe you one of those funny posh beers that tastes of wood :p

Yes I can bring it to Swansea no problem. You do realise that this is a wireless hub as well as a switch/ router? and that with an appropriate card you can use it wirelessly? Might reduce the need to run cable :)

I've got a box of CAT5 and the tools to whip up a long cable, or a Netgear USB wireless adapter you could have. The latter will cost you a beer though, it's reasonably useful ;)
Any chance you get let me know if I could do this on my iBook?
Sure. I don't have the information to hand but I'll dig it out at the weekend and send it over.
One thing though, the iBook will have to be cabled up to the internet, not using wireless.
