View Full Version : Shall I move to Vista?

When Vista first arrived, I was like, meh. I'll have a play once it gets more established, perhaps at SP1...

However my colleagues gave me Vista Ultimate and Office 2007 Ultimate this morning, from the MSDN, and I have to admit I'm tempted to try.

Anybody on here tried Vista? Is it better than XP Pro? Is it worth migrating yet?

I've not used it as a workstation, I simply have it running for testing/development. You wont lose anything by not being on Vista (at least for now), and there's likely to be some pitfalls yet to be found. Simple answer - backup, try it, decide :)

I have it loaded on my new machine before I move the old one into the workshop.. Looks and feels nice.. It's difficult to judge without a DX10 card for games and I've not really got into any security and Netwrok features. Parental Controls are good though. :) Initial thoughts are good.

One thing that you might want to consider is installing office 2007. Apparently its not compatable with the older versions of office. IIRC its something to do with the new file format? Has anyone else heard of this?

I had a go at the beta and the file format is different but you can still save documents etc in the old format (at least, you could in the beta).

The new interface takes a bit of getting used to though.

I know Outlook 07 doesn't talk to Exchange 5.5 earlier....which is a pain in the arse.

The new file format is alright actually. You can still save in the old format though.

The ability to save as PDF was very nice though.

You can, of course, do all of the above with OpenOffice too - which is my favourite price ;)

Vista - pretty good already, I have been running it at work as a workstation for a few months through betas, seems stable but then again there are bound to be pitfalls as mentioned earlier, however having used XP shortly after release Vista is far better stability wise than XP RTM was.

Office 2K7 - I think it is great, again been using this through the betas, I am getting used to the differences although it is proving difficult as I am constantly switching between the two environments at work between workstations throughout the school and my worksation.
