View Full Version : Free firewall
Guys, I need a firewalls on my computer. I used to be protected by the one at home, but now it's not there anymore I feel all vulnerable. Not sure which one to go with. Any recommendations?
Criterea: Must be freeeee :D
Merci buckets
You're using a hardware router aren't you?
No firewall needed in that case.
^^
I dont think outbound program control is anything you need. Just make sure you have a decent antivirus :)
Only PCs I'd get a firewall for are those that get connected to untrusted networks (e.g. laptops, PCs taken to LANs, etc.). I used to be paranoid about this stuff and every PC had to have a software firewall locked down to the max, now I just use Windows firewall and leave it at that.

Router has NAT, you are protected, to add a software firewall would be tin foil hat stuff :)

Oh ok. I have contracted 2 trojans you see, and I already have antivirus. They're stuck in the virus vault at the moment, but I can't heal them and I'm worried about accessing my bank etc., in case they start sending my details out :(
Not really sure what to do..

Use Windows Firewall.
I've been using it for ages no probs at all.
Avast AVG, Windows Firewall, Ewido, Spybod S&D, Ad-Aware SE & C Cleaner takes care of all my needs for Free

use good old microsoft "tick" for firewall ;)
that or zonealarm maybe ?
In the short term, download NOD32 - imo the best antivirus software there is. They have one of if not the best track record for detection in the wild and you get 30 days free - after that its something measly like £28 a year. It is also the least bloated antivirus software I have ever come across :)
I use windows firewall and Avast aswell as my Router of course - all seems to work fine
I used to use AVG but it was rubbish tbh - the moment I put Avast on and ran a boot scan it found a couple of nasties and plenty of adware (I had been pretty sure something had got through AVG as I'd started getting random pop-ups)

Likewise, avast may not be user friendly or pretty, but it's very lightweight and good at what it does.
Dont even have antivirus on the workstation myself.

They were bought by them :( Shame really, it was a good app. Used it back in the days on 2000 on dialup :)

I've used exactly the same combination for 3 years now and never had any problems from viruses or trojans or anything like that.
