Question on The French Connection (spoilers)

Something has really been bugging me of late. Right at the end of the film, whilst chasing Alain Charnier, Doyle runs through a doorway and you head a shot fired. Does that even mean anything or was it just a gunshot, since Alain escapes?

Great film, not seen it for aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagggggggggggggeeeeeeeeeessssssss ss, I'll dig the DVD out soon and report back.
