My Dad's 60th birthday is coming up on March 8th and I want to get him something brilliant. He's often said he'd like to have a projector with the usual 'if I could afford to I would...' and I remember when he brought one home from work to do an assignment - he spent 2 hours working on his presentation and then spent 5 hours messing around with it.

Background stories aside, I am not quite sure where to look for something great. I'd consider most budgets as long as it isn't ridiculous, but looking to spend no more than £750 if I can avoid it. There won't be anything which requires extreme levels of detail or quality, but I would like the machine to last more than 6 months and not be tacky :)

It would be a plus if it could be used with PC/TV/DVD/etc at will. I don't know much about technical aspects for these machines so if someone could educate me I could say more about what I'd need :)

BenQ W100

My only reservation is thats its DLP not LCD but I'm not going to go into the merits of each. This is a great projector for the money admitedly its not HD but if you go HD your looking at the top end of £750 and if you are just going to use it for SD stuff its pointless tbh.

For further info have a look here http://www.avforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=43&page=2&order=desc :)

Also, there are running costs involved with PJ's for things like bulbs. And at hundreds of £'s each they're not all that cheap. If you buy him the PJ, is he prepared to keep it running?

Just a thought :)

How long can a projector last?

Projectors generally last a while apart from MB's :p But the bulbs have an hourly MTBF measured in thousands of hours depending on the bulb. They are considered consumables.
