You're not selling it to me very well. I just interpret that as "Opera already has all sorts of extra unnecessary cack installed whether I want it or not"

Opera all they way, the only thing it used to have against it was it cost money. Mouse gestures are a godsend, and free integrated content blocker just to begin.

Opera lacks Google browser sync so it's off the table for me (well, that and I dont really get on with it anyway). That thing is a god send.

Just looked that google thing up, not entirely sure what it does though? I like the way i can install opera on a new build or use opera portable and i dont need to install any extensions everything is there ready working and integrated by the developer not by some 3rd party dude (which is good, but can be unreliable).

Although sometimes it gets memory happy but then firefox has always had this issue as well, and it really only is if i leave opera with 40+ tabs open over a week etc...

Syncronises my bookmarks, cookies and browser history around all the Firefox instances I use on whatever machine I want. Saves hunting for bookmarks or logging into sites again and again when I move machine/OS. Total god send when you dual boot, work remotely and work in VM's a lot.

Tried Opera a few years back and didn't really get on with it well. I dare say it has changed a bit since then but I'm happy with Firefox so I can't see me changing in the near future.

Firefox can be a bit of a memory hog but most of my rigs (certainly the ones I use for browsing) have a surfeit of memory, so this isn't a problem for me.

Stan :)

Having spent the afternoon coding to find my site didn't work quite right in IE, that smiley is sooooooooooo fitting. Crazy ass browser. FF, Opera, Safari were spot on. IE went off like it'd been smoking crack.

On 7 as well?

IE always.. Everytime I hear people having explorer problems, they are using FF.. So what's the benefit of FF over IE?

Daz
06-02-2007, 11:39
Cross platform support, more complete CSS support, published source code, can make any modifications you want to it either through the source or through extensions, at one time tabbed browsing (a TDI is now pretty much a standard requirement of a browser, and I dont think it's unfair to say that's down to FF), arguably better security in a sand boxed browser which has a smaller market share.

Of course, they're only benefits if you need or use them.

so how come it seems so buggy.. I'm not sold.

Daz
06-02-2007, 12:02
That's a pretty subjective statement. I've never had Firefox crash on me since 1.5.x (we're now on 2.0.x), but then, I dont use many extensions either.

I'm digging this up because i fell accross this (http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=104071&page=10#comment1502514) by accident and totally thought of you Daz :D ;D. So try opera now, you don't have much of an excuse now mwahaha.

I haven't tried oSync myself, so i don't know if it syncs everything (i think it may lack cookies) but it looks damn close to the google browser sync.

Also Opera is an MDI as opposed to the TDI firefox/IE7 interface. I didn't realise it until the other day but its really annoying for me now not to have a *real* MDI program!

Mark
13-05-2007, 12:27
MDI is so last century (if you believe Microsoft). ;D

/looks at MDI software I work on every day.

MDI?

Mark

MDI = Multiple document interface

Old versions of Office apps used to be true MDI, but Microsoft dumped that idea circa Office 2000.

Will it sync my cookies and history as well? Only really mentions bookmarks there.

LeperousDust
13-05-2007, 15:59
I'm assuming it does history, because i think it just copies the profiles basically, which include your history i think. I dont actually care i dont need it, just thought if you're bored and want to try opera there is more reason to do so now... Report back if it works too :p I could use it between my home PC and laptop (not a major problem for me though).

I like firefox. Only thing that bugs me is the individual 'x' close tab buttons used to be on the right hand side, now they're on individual tabs. I don't like that, but everything else I like.

Safari is rubbish, bugs me.

I literally haven't used Opera in about 8 or maybe 10 years though. Maybe I should give it a crack. As it were.

LeperousDust
13-05-2007, 16:44
Mouse gestures in opera means you dont reach for the 'X'.

You can middle click links (same goes for FF btw :))
Shift and left click links (possibly the same for FF)
Or
Hold the right mouse button down and draw an "L" - Which is whay i use all the time, once you use the integrated mouse gestures you (should) fall in love.

Going back/forward refreshing opening a duplicate page, cloing pages, password manager etc... All integrated into Opera and can be access via mouse gestures :)

Same here. I used opera years ago but now I figure 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' and I'm perfectly happy with Firefox.

And mouse gestures are useless for me :p I never used them last time I had Opera and iirc I could set up my mouse for mouse gestures (Rings a bell at least) and it's never interested in me in the slightest.

LeperousDust

I can't believe you don't like mouse gestures. They are so efficient, i wish windows used them :(

Mark
13-05-2007, 17:49
I don't like using a mouse, never mind mouse gestures. :p

Haly
13-05-2007, 19:00
I just don't see the point. I'm sure it's efficient but I seem to be able to do stuff fast enough with a keyboard and non gesturing mouse :p

Feek
13-05-2007, 19:13
I play with my mouse, gestures would be a waste of time, I'd keep doing random stuff!

LeperousDust
13-05-2007, 19:37
I can see i'm fighting a losing battle here, i'm just very impressed with mouse gestures myself.

Mark i know you're a keyboard junkie but if you only remotely use the mouse, Mouse gestures rock.

Feek you can't do thing by accident, i play with the mouse all the time too :D you just draw stuff while right clicking to activate almost anything, if you make a mistake or realise you're doing something by accident (i actually do this quite often) just carry on and draw a circle and it cancels your request :)

Haly keyboard shortcuts are good i use them, but mouse gestures are one step better, theyre more organic (sounds werid i suppose but thats how i'd describe them). A mouse and menu i agree sucks, but gestures are awesomely great.

I just don't see the point for me personally sorry.
Like I said a few posts ago, if it ain't broke why fix it? :p

I'm really not a fan of that argument. If that were true we'd still be using 3.1 (or extremely DOS) and some archaic internet explorer. That's not a dig at you or anything i just always rise to that useless statement.

Why do you use firefox now? When IE7 does it all anyway :p?

Mark
13-05-2007, 20:24
Because most of us came from IE6 which was most definitely broken. :p

Windows 3.1 and DOS? If Microsoft had stayed there we'd all be using Macs now. :)

Haly
13-05-2007, 21:04
Because I like Firefox and see no reason to change any time soon while it's doing everything I want a browser to do :)
I came from Opera btw NOT IE5 which I think was the version I used beforehand.

Mind you, as much as I like Firefox I don't particularly care what others use, their call and their PC. :) Just because someone doesn't use Opera doesn't automatically make them in the wrong ;)

Daz
13-05-2007, 21:48

But there's only so far you can take that, only so much you can do with gestures before it becomes an inefficient way of interaction. And on top of that, it only works for a handful of applications at best, and their implantation is likely to be different.

The most efficient way to use a computer system is a keyboard, but with that power comes complexity, and in turn inaccessibility to most people.

That said, if you're whacking off to porn, you need a hand free, so there's use there :D

The only thing I use IE for is windows updates...

Before IE I used netscape, then FF came along and I was saved!
