View Full Version : My PC is dead... Long live my PC!
So my trusty (but ageing) P4 machine gave up on me :'(
To be fair, I have slaughtered that machine - 2.4c800 clocked to 3.4GHz on watercooling, ram running with silly volts and the graphics card clocked into oblivion. I clocked it back a while ago but the damage has been done - it now randomly reboots, usually when I am in the middle of doing something.
I had to replace it - so on a budget I set out to replace it with something modest...
Intel Dual Core 2.8, 2Gb DDR2, ATI X1550 Pro. Comparatively its not going to set the world on fire but even with the crappy vista drivers I get 60fps in my preferred settings on CS:S and under XP I would expect 100fps.
Best of all though, its sooooo quiet :D
Well I certainly wouldn't turn my nose up at it but then again my PC's not as good as that ;D
I'd love a quiet PC though :/
Nice - I just ordered myself the parts for a Core 2 Duo 2.4 and 2GB PC6400C4. It'll be replacing the somewhat past it XP1700+ (that's Palomino core to you) that is my Linux box. :)
Think it came to about £550 all-in. I'll be cannibalising case and PSU, so it's not too bad.
I haven't upgraded my pcs for years. I seem to spend my money on other things and never have money left for anything else :( Really want some new monitors...
Sounds like a decent spec pc - now if only your were taking part in F@H ;D
Mark - you putting that linux box towards team 10?
You damn right - the old box folds, so you can bet the new one will.
I've got another one in London too. Same deal. :D
I'm going to cut my PC count down from 6 to 4 (but only due to natural causes, so they'll stay until they die). I need this server and my main box, and will probably keep the media box. As the oldest (by some distance), the server was first up for upgrade.
Hmm, I have 3 machines with predominantly idle CPUs...
Should I get back to F@H? How can I quickly and easily do it? Info please!
If you can bear it, there's a good guide in the DC forum. Having said that, with that new kit, you'd be better off on one of the beta clients, which are a bit more 'challenging' to get going (particularly the GPU one).

Quietness is the best, *pats reserator*. I have one fan in my power supply of my ST20G5, and its a royal annoyance! I'm looking for a suitably cheap silent fanless external power supply that can take over. Looked into mCubed, but they're still a little too expensive. Once i've managed that though, i'll be fanless :D
I think its an obsession...
Does the 8800GTX support F@H? I've recently started folding with my conroe, not with a particular team though. I'm using the CLI version.
Negative. nVidia cards are not supported. Period. :(
So, following the computing re-jig I have tidied and taken some photos...

Whaddya think?
EDIT:
Yeah, yeah, yeah re the speaker placement - its about the best I can do given the shape of the room :(
I think someone has too many monitors at their disposal. My brain would ache with that many. :p
Oh, and there seems to be some lack of Windows themes going on on at least two of the monitors. :p
Otherwise, very nice. :)
Well, vista running on one of the machines (the rightmost two screens) then MCE2005 on the one on the left of the widescreen and the 19" on the shelves and then server 2k3 enterprise on the 17" syncmaster.
All running synergy.
It rocks.
If you're running synergy, why do you need so many monitors? :)

I thought you tidying up would be for something like this :p what you can't see is out of shot on his bed is the stuff he has 'tided'.
Love my little corner where i can watch things while you do stuff :)
(ps it isn't quiet, it is VERY warm in there :p)
Mark- So he can show off, or keep me amused while he messes with his puter.
Synergy cant switch video feeds :)
Plus, it means I can do properly seperate tasks across my machines at the same time without the hassle of a KVM solution and without having to take time to switch between apps - lets me keep an eye on several things at once too.
Plus it just looks damn cool :D
EDIT: Paula, my bed has a guitar on it and some clothes - thats it :)
Didn't think it would be. I have a room with 4 PCs. It pretty much heats the house, and that's with only one monitor. :)
Yes its warm but the only noise comes from the PSU fan in the server box - which is due to be changed as soon as I can be bothered. Its not even THAT loud - perfectly possible to sleep without turning anything off and with just me in the room I find the temperature hovers around "perfect".
FWIW, there is 10.5GHz of computing power with 5Gb of RAM and somewhere in the region of 2Tb of HDD space lurking behind those monitors :D
'bout the same as my spec then. The server has 1.7TB in it alone (and will be getting a heart transplant this weekend to end up with a 2.4GHz C2D).
Very nice looking set up :)
I'm doing a big revamp of my room when I move back to Swansea, won't have as much expensive kit as that though :p It'll probably just look prettier and have a sofa :D
Well its no Mac but it looks nice enough ;)

It is loud, adding me to the room tips it over the edge into being too hot. :(
Crikey! Looks cool, but way OTT for me, then again I'm a simpleton ;)

Nice spec on the new rig and nice setup in the room - and yes, you should use those idle CPUs for F@H - very worthwhile project.
I currently have 7 PCs in my bedroom (gets a bit toasty in the summer but is excellent in winter :D ), the noise doesn't bother me - in fact I have difficulty sleeping without them on.
Those 7 are pretty much solely F@H rigs and so only have 3 monitors between them. The 3 downstairs are the ones mostly used (1 gaming rig, 1 general purpose rig and one for any colleagues staying in the flat).
As it is a company flat, my privacy isn't always assured so I do tend to use one of the upstairs machines for watching 'educational' material ;)
