View Full Version : NTL (Virgin Media) lose the free Sky channels
http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/digitaltv/a43031/virgin-media-to-lose-sky-channels.html
Got NTL cable? You won't have the freebie Sky channels for much longer.
I'd say there's worse channels to lose personally. Sky 1 has about 2 good shows then seems to put repeats on all the time. And you can download the good Sky 1 shows anyhow ;D
Was expecting this, sucks the big one. I'd be more bothered if I didnt have web access to download the show's we'll miss (24 and Lost).
erm - I'm gutted about this... :/
I get basic NTL TV package, and now I wonder what its worth... most channels are on freeview now I think...

As Kitten said we just download all our shows that are on sky one so no big loss there :D

In your case, you'd probably be better off with freeview then :) I only got NTL TV in Stafford because I couldn't get freeview there otherwise I'd have stuck with it.
beware of this though:
I'm in agreement with what they're doing if it tells Sky that they can't just do what they want and get away with it. If Sky go ahead and pull the channels they will lose around £45 million a year in advertising revenue, which just shows how far they are willing to go to stop any kind of decent competition. That can't be allowed imo.
I can't even think of any Sky freeview channels  Guessing I won't miss them then :D
Think I might actually kill off my Sky contract.
The only things I'll miss are Stargate and the cricket. Not sure about 'backing up' Stargate from elsewhere, but I can do without the cricket if I have to, and it's certainly not worth £42/month.
Need to save everything off the Sky+ box first though as obviously it'll kill any remaining recordings.
I had Sky installed in my bedroom when living at the rents but didn't take it with me when I moved out. I can't say I really miss any of it.
Only thing I will miss are some of the police and beer progs on Sky Three on Freeview :/

Well i ring them about every 6 weeks and moan & whinge at them. At the mo i am getting my telly for nothing and discount on my phone. This has gone on for over 2 years, i just ring them moan about me being a loyal long standing customer and WTF are you doing offering new customers better deals than me. They then discount a service or give me some other saving.
I keep telling my Mum to threaten to leave but she never does :(
They've been customers with NTL since the days of cabletel so one of the first lot, and they're paying £55 for 4mb BB, phone line and the second most basic TV package.
They're really getting ripped off imo, all because they don't argue it. Grrr!
Sky One is turd, repeats interspersed with crappy adverts every 5 minutes, wouldn't miss it at all.
Hope Sky Sports News doesn't disappear though, we watch that quite a lot here :)
I'm pretty sure that's included.
Oh, I forgot about the police stuff. Can be quite fun watching idiots ending up on the wrong end of the law.
So, I need to replace: Stargate/Atlantis, Cricket(maybe), and Cop shows. :)
Then I'll tell Sky where they can shove their £43.50pcm.
Hmm that's a bit pants, some of the presenters are hawt
I'd happily pay a couple of quid or even a fiver a month for Sky Sports News, wonder if that's the eventual plan - make the channels available as an optional package?
The only reason we had the NTL TV package is because it worked out at about £3 extra per month as a internet/phone/tv package. Losing Sky doesn't bother me at all because we never watch it anyway.

If you don't mind me asking, which package deal have you got?
At the moment I think we pay £35 for Standard TV, 2Gb Broadband and evening/weekend phone calls. I don't know if we can get cheaper/better on Virgin's new options?

I think it's the same as yours but without the free eve/wkend calls. It's £30. We didn't want to pay the extra for eve/wk phone calls because we both have free mins on our mobiles. When I signed up for it, I thought it was £30 per month. Our first bill was for £34.something so I rang them to find what was up and found out they'd added this call package without asking me. I removed it.
Oh and I got this email today. Don't know if anyone would want to see it:
Dear customer,
Let’s face it. Things would be pretty boring if choice didn’t exist. There’d be just one kind of airline to fly with. One type of car to drive. And if Sky had their way, there’d only be one place to get TV.
We thought we’d let you in on a few tricks they’ve been trying to get their way.
While we’ve continued to make Virgin Media channels like Living, Bravo and Challenge available to all Sky customers, Sky may withdraw their non-premium channels from Virgin Media’s service – in order to force you into switching service.
Virgin Media were willing to pay an increase in costs in order to get the complete range of Sky content and channels.
However, Sky have consistently demanded an increase that bears no relation to the channels’ market value.
We have refused to accept this increase, since it would mean absorbing significant costs ourselves, and passing the kind of price increase on to our customers that is simply unfair. We are not prepared to rip off our customers.
So Sky have picked up their ball and gone home.
As a Virgin company, we’re well used to the attempts of large corporations trying to manipulate markets, stifle competition and rip off consumers.
Luckily, we don’t think Sky’s the limit.
We think the future’s full of fresh entertainment and communication possibilities. And we’re looking forward to bringing them to you. With all the freedom and choice you deserve.
We’ve launched Virgin Central, a revolutionary type of TV channel, where programmes start and stop when you say so. This is only available on Virgin Media, since Sky don’t have the technology to be able to transmit it. What’s more, it’s available to every single one of our digital TV customers.
And there’s our unique on demand library. A giant collection of over 500 films, 1000 music videos, 100s of TV shows – all at your beck and call. You can access them at any time.
We’re not scared of competition, we welcome it.

Sir Richard Branson
That Dicky Branson - what a guy!
That's a typical Branson-esque comment. Whether he wrote it himself, I doubt, but it's certainly his style. :)
At the prices being waved about in here, I might consider switching services. Save the aforementioned TV stuff, I couldn't care less about Sky any more.

I haven't noticed any difference yet but I don't really watch much TV atm, other than CSI on Living :embarassed:
fair shout to branson tbh. i know i could lose some programs for a while, but **** sky really.
Whoopsy! My anger made me carelessly post another thread on GD.
I shall basically sum up what I said other there:
RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH! *sob* Booooooooooo! *sob* :'( :'( :'(
and I hope the mooey people who canny agree over this affair are forced to eat at least 3 years supply of Jeremy Beadles belly button fluff.
BOooooooooooooooOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooo.
*goes back to spinach*
I like Richard Branson, I don't mind giving him money 'cos he seems like a nice geezer.
Didn't watch Sky so no skin off my nose.
As encouraged by me, my Dad phoned up to try to haggle a better deal off Virgin today. They were paying £55 a month for 4mb BB, phone line and what's now the medium TV range (but on NTL was slightly above the cheapest one) which seemed a bit pricey to me.
After a call, they're now paying £35 a month for 4mb BB (Which the guy on the phone said was an upgrade from 2mb....but we've had 4mb BB for ages so who knows what went on there), phone line with free evening and weekend calls and the XL TV Package which has everything but Sky Movies/Sky Sports on it.
Not bad for the price of a phone call :D
Have to haggle with them again in a few months when he phones to get another box put in when I'm back in Swansea. :D

Moaning for the win, also using the 150 number the call costs nothing, it's a win win.
My kids are currently complaining bitterly about having no Sky1 as they tend to just watch The Simpsons constantly.

Tell them in your day there was no such thing as Sky and you just had to go outside and look into the clouds for yellow people shouting 'Doh' to walk about on :p
