I got Mass Effect 2 from Boomerang yesterday. Getting on with it much more than the first one.
I think instantly becoming in charge of my own ship helped that - so much fun ;D

I really must try Mass Effect 2 again, I just didn't get on with it. Wasn't much of a fan of the in-your-face instant action that took place from the off.

As it was on offer this weekend, I bought Star Wars Force Unleashed.

Oh dear.

It's painfully clear this is a console port, and the bugs are annoying the sweet merry hell out of me.
Gameplay is quite fun at times, but also manages to be incredibly frustrating. I've lost track of the number of times Starkiller has merrily lightsaber attacked himself off a walkway; or the number of times I've fought hard, made one small mistake and found myself ported back 10 minutes. Cut scene segments revealing the next "cool new" bad guy / machine are done with no attention to what you were doing or attempting to do at the time. Everyone just suddenly stops and stands there whilst it takes place. That's really irritating when you've just done something like create a lightning shield.
I half expect the cut scene to return to show you Starkiller and whoever he's attacking having tea and biscuits and chatting about the price of land speeders.
I've managed to crash the game 5 times so far. Once I managed to kill an AT-AT using force lightning alone (with damage boost from a crystal), and not going through the really irritating as hell "press the buttons I flash up on the screen" sequence. My character stood there in a lame pose as if waiting for me to press the right initial button, only with no target... nothing could happen. In the mean time I've got storm troopers just standing looking at me. On 3 occasions shadow troopers have walked into ramps instead of up them, turned around to go back and got stuck. Shortly afterwards the game crashes.

One final really large irritation as far as I'm concerned is the sudden switch to fixed camera for the boss fights. I've lost track of how many times force lightning has missed a boss character because I wasn't quite precisely aimed at them. Sod that it's hard to get pin point lined up when you're looking side on. It seems utterly ridiculous and drives me out of the character / game incredibly fast. It's preposterous to think that a trained sith is incapable of aiming his lightning all of a sudden, especially when there is an element of auto-aim during normal levels.

I can't honestly remember the last time a game made me swear so much, and I think it's possibly the first game ever that's made me want to throw my mouse at something.

Shame you're having problems with it, as I really liked The Force Unleashed, I thought it was one of the best Star Wars games I'd played in years, certainly since KOTOR.

Garp

Do people actually play this game for fun?

Seriously?! How is it fun to have to keep throwing crap at tie fighters, yet at the same time be powerful enough to pull a star destroyer down out of the sky?

YES I CAN FRAKKING DO IT. So why do I have to do it several times over. and over. and over. And f**king over again. Let's not ignore how he appears to be the dumbest jedi alive who can barely figure out which end of a lightsaber is which, let alone what he's supposed to do with the crap he's throwing.

I'm seriously hoping that the problem is the PC keyboard/mouse control system. I really do. I can't understand how anyone could find this remotely fun.

edit: looking around at a number of review sites suggests it really is a crap port, rather than a reflection on the game.

Force Unleashed never originally had a PC release did it? (A quick look suggests it was over a year between console and PC release)

I seem to recall them claiming a PC wasn't powerful enough for it (bizarre) but when lots of people moaned I think they hashed together the utter abortion of a game you have had the misfortune to buy.

Yeah, something like that. Performance is mostly fine on my quad-core i5 & 5870. I have seen a number of reviews that show performance hassles on lesser rigs which is nuts given how far behind consoles now are in graphics and processing power. Even more so when the game was originally released on the Wii too.

The whole port stinks of half-assed "What's the least we can get away with". Certain controls just don't map to the mouse all that well. There are a number of occasions where you force-grip stuff and have to pull it upwards a distance. On an analogue stick that's no problem, just keep pushing up. On a mouse it's back to the old days of going to the edge of the mousemat, picking up and moving to the base, then moving up again. Worst example (so far) is the "pull the star destroyer out of the sky section", where you need to both press S and repeat over and over again pulling the mouse down the mousepad, pick up, move to top and pull down again.

It really is. I kind of wished I'd kept hold of it for more.
As for the single player campaign which I finished a week ago, I think it's up there with the first game and I absolutely loved every minute. It's now right up there as one of my goty contenders.

I'm currently playing Dragon Age: Origins - Awakenings. It's very much more of the same but I'm digging it.

I also picked up Risk and it's great!

Been playing Final Fantasy 13 thanks to Jen. It's pretty good, only 3-4 hours in at the moment but it's shaping up to be enticing.

Purchased Lego Harry Potter (love all the Lego games) and The Saboteur (2nd hand). Currently playing the latter and loving it. Always wanted to throw a ****ing Nazi out of a guard tower, so now I can die happy.

I'm currently playing through Test Drive Unlimited. Still a surprising number of players on that game, and it's held up rather well in that it doesn't have frame rate issues, the handling isn't as bad as I remember and it has plenty to do.

Looking forward to the second game, hoping it has better graphics mind :p.

Going to buy myself an RTS after work. Don't have much experience with em (Settlers II and some Red Alert back along is all) so I'm looking for something fairly simple at first - i.e., no Supreme Commander. Leaning towards Company of Heroes atm, unless anyone has any other suggestions?

Company of Heroes is an excellent game to get back into strategy with, brilliant game.

Total War games are good but you kinda have to know you'll like them to see past the array of bugs they usually come with, otherwise you might get put off before you really get going. I'd say Total War was something to go for once you're back in the swing of RTS.

I had flu for 2 weeks or so not long ago meaning I got very behind on reviewing.

In the past week I've frantically caught up meaning I've played loads! Not all good either :/

Lego Harry Potter - Brilliant fun. Best Lego game yet imo and I have no interest in Harry Potter normally. Definitely going back to 1k it some time but for now, my Mum's got it as she loves the Lego games.

Shrek Forever After - Ugh. To be fair, for kids it's ok. Quite simplistic but I've played a lot worse. Problem is it's very boring for anyone who plays games regularly.

Toy Story 3 - Not played much of this yet but from what I have seen, it's brilliant. Story mode looks quite weak but the Toy Box/Sandbox mode is fantastic.

Dragon Quest IX - Had this the past couple of weeks and it's great. Not as strong as Dragon Quest VIII maybe - I'd have liked to have seen more characterisation and more story - but it is excellent. I'm off to London next week (to see the 3DS, woo) so this'll keep me happy on the train. :D

And purely for fun, I've played Split/Second (so far, so good) and Singularity which is shaping up to be interesting although lack of subtitles is very annoying. Little surprised by the rave reviews it's garnered but it's certainly intriguing.

I'm seriously PO'd right now. Just finished Lego Harry Potter and I have:

20/20 red bricks
50/50 student in peril
24/24 true wizard
200/200 gold bricks
24/24 crests
167/167 character studs
36/37 achievements

That one achievement I don't have is the 100% completion achievement. It's stuck at 99.9% with nothing left to do. Gutted.

The only thing I didn't do is re-beat every level in Free Play, which sounds like an odd part of the 100% and ought to be worth more than 0.1% of the game. For some I got the collectables I needed and quit. I really hope that isn't it. :/

Bit of a bump as we've not posted in this for ages :)

First off, I recently bought Dead Rising: Case Zero and I loved every single minute of it. I've already taken to Chuck as a character, he seems quite cool, so I enjoyed playing as him. It's very much like the first Dead Rising, which is to be expected, but the refinements make it even more enjoyable than the first game. The control scheme for shooting was very poor in the first game, but it's very much like most shooters now, using the left trigger to bring up the aiming reticule and the right stick to aim. I love the weapon combo system, creating things like a Spiked Baseball Bat, Beer Hat and Paddlesaw is just awesome, and I can't wait for the full game to discover the alleged 200+ combo weapons. Great achievements in the title as well, which took me 2 1/2 playthroughs to get all of them. It's just gotten me really hyped for Dead Rising 2 now, which can't get here quick enough!

On the back of that, I've also gone back to Dead Rising. I plan on going through it twice more before the sequel drops, once to remind myself of the story (which I remember pretty well, with a few minor details missing), and another to try and get the achievements I'm missing. Still need to play through Infinity Mode as well to try and get the 5 and 7 day survivor achievements. I'll try them when I get a spare 16 hours somewhere! Definitely want to 1k this, preferably before the sequel comes out as I might not be able to go back to the controls of the first game after spending 20-40 hours trying to 1k the sequel.

Beyond that, I've still got some review games to get through, with RUSE hopefully on the way to me today. That looks interesting so hopefully that will come in the next day or so :)

What's everyone else playing lately?

Played quite a lot of late for reviewing purposes.

In terms of games I actually feel bothered to talk about though... :p

Dragon Age Awakenings - picked this up without a box for £6. Excellent fun as I loved Dragon Age the first time round. Roll on Dragon Age 2 :D

Lara Croft and The Guardian of Light - nice twist on the usual Tomb Raider formula.

Dead Rising 2: Case Zero - love it! Enjoying it much more than the original as the aiming isn't so ridiculous. A review copy of DR2 is winging its way to me asap but I might be delegating as I'm not sure I'm really the right person to cover a DR game. :( I was terrible at the original.

Singularity - borrowed from Nokkon. Just didn't really fascinate me :/ Some good ideas but it was lacking anything unique to be that compelling. Completed it though as people on Twitter kept telling me to persevere as it would improve.

We Sing Encore - never played a karaoke game before. Excellent fun :D Even if I can't sing ;D

Now to tackle Super Mario Galaxy 2 again and a copy of HAWX2 arrived yesterday which was rather nice :)

For the past week or so I've been absolutely hammering Dead Rising, knocking off 2 of the last 4 achievements I had to get. I needed to get Saint (saving 50 survivors) and Transmissionary (answering all calls from Otis). I had a guide for getting Saint, and the guide said that if you followed it perfectly, stopping the main cases at the right point, you could save all the survivors and get all of Otis' calls in the same game. I followed the guide to the letter, saving every single survivor, only to find that the guide told me to stop the main storyline one case too early, so I missed one call from Otis. I ended up going through it again, and despite thinking it wasn't possible, I managed to save every survivor, defeat every psycho, solve every case, and answer every call in a single playthrough. Beyond the 5 and 7 day survivor achievements, I've done everything there is to do in the game, and I'll be leaving them for a while now, with Dead Rising 2 hopefully arriving today.

Also got a few review games to get through, with NHL 11 and RUSE waiting to be played, and Fifa 11 hopefully arriving in the next few days. A busy weekend ahead I think! :)

The Xen escapades were the most boring bit of hl in my eyes. Gabe does need a rocket up his backside though for the HL2 episodes fiasco. Still while the money is rolling in for steam, L4D I/II, Portal I/II I can't see they are going to get a move on.

As for me, I've polished off Bioshock 2. I wanted to complete it, but I can see why a lot wanted to trade it in. In all honesty it was fairly easy, I never bothered doing all the research and I think I finished the game with 650+ adam. Once you had scout, insects, security and hypnotise it became really easy. I certainly have no real desire to go through it again.

I think I just got bored of rapture, nothing ground breaking was uncovered this time which was part of the problem. The new columbus looks good though, if not for at least a change of scenery.

I love it, can't really quantify why though. I guess it just adds another level of immersion (like the slow movements require quite a steady hand now) and it's really intuitive and accurate.

Fallout: NV

As good as Fallout 3 so far, which is nice. Not enjoying so much the 'breakdown' and creation bits. Nothing spoils a game more than being able to collect hundreds of different useless objects which can only then be used when you reach a specific level and have all the relevant bits. Really clutters up the inventory, as does the ridiculousness of individual playing cards. Why these things can't have their own inventory category I'll never know.

I have, however, become a bit of a master at sneak and melee weapons. Sneaking up on people and exploding their head with a punch from a spiked glove is hugely satisfying. :D

I actually love the crafting side of it, though only for ammo, which is really useful for some weapons. It becomes easier when you have a home where you can dump stuff, though I wish they had a place like my old house in Megaton where you could buy everything you needed. Having a workbench and a reloading table in a house in NV would be awesome.

I've looked at wheels in the past but can you use them if you are sitting on the sofa?

Having said that I do have a seat from my Lotus laying around at the moment

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1021083/seat.jpg

 + x a bazillion. ;D

I've built my own cockpit out of a small desk & some decking boards i cut to fit so the wheel sits right over my lap when in my leather recliner.
I've been looking around for the right bargain race seat to build Version III
Anyways,
The 360 wheel although it has a profile to fit your lap it would be completely useless if used this way. It has to be fixed to summit so the feedback works properly otherwise it would shake your **** out. :D

You Have to get a wheel though if into racing games as without a wheel the driving games are totally dead. With a wheel the games come alive & the 360 official wheel is acually pretty damn good.

Edit.
Just remembered there is a wheel stand that is purposely built to use whilst on your sofa or armchair, It's a frame that folds out & brings the wheel over your lap i think it's around 99 quid though.

Playing quite a few things at the moment here, I don't seem to have enough hours in the day to play everything I want to.

Got Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit through for review a few days ago, and I was sceptical about it, having thought the demo was a little weak. Really impressed with the full game though, they've tightened the controls a lot which was my main complaint, and it's great fun to be the cops and using the various weapons you have to try to take out numerous racers, while dodging their defensive weapons. The time trials have some exceptionally tight requirements for the gold medals, but I quite like that as it'll take some real skill to get gold (distinction) in all the events.

Also got Smackdown vs Raw 2011 and started on that last night. I really like the new WWE Universe feature, which tracks all the matches you play (outside of the Road to Wrestlemania mode), and builds a realistic game world around you. Play against and beat the same guy a couple of times? Watch him turn into an enemy, and try to gatecrash your matches to cause you to lose. I love the new physics as well, making some of the matches more realistic, such as the Tables, Ladders and Chairs match. I had a quick go at one last night, and my opponent was on top of the ladder. I pushed it over, and he fell off, straight into a ladder I'd previously set up against the corner, and he snapped the ladder in half as he bounced off it. It looked as painful as it sounds. Looking forward to putting a lot more time into this over the new few days.

Call of Duty: Black Ops also came through last week, and I've not put as much time into this as I'd like. Not touched the single player yet, jumping straight into the multiplayer, and finding that I suck ass again. The new Combat Training feature is excellent, letting you play multiplayer offline against bots, which is great for learning the maps, and trying out various weapons. Hopefully I'll get decent at it again soon, as I was never that bad at MW2 when I learned the maps.

Rock Band 3 was another present from EA and I love it. It's just what I hoped the sequel would be, which is mainly more of the same, with some great features built in (like the ability to carry on playing after failing a song). It's got a much better filtering system for when you want to play a few songs, so it's great if you have several hundred tracks as it's much easier to find what you want.

Fallout: New Vegas was finished recently as well, and I loved it hugely. It took the things I loved about the first game (the exploration, the quests, levelling up) and added plenty of cool new features, like the ability to craft your own ammo and health items. If you want all achievements (as I do, of course) then you'll need to finish the game in 4 separate ways, so it'll either take 4 playthroughs, or just reloading an earlier save from the right time. Not sure whether I'll play it through 3 more times (as my first playthrough ran at 85 hours, and I didn't do everything), but I'll certainly replay it and do all 4 endings. Can't wait to see what the future will bring for the game in terms of DLC as well.

So, that's about it really. Plenty of other games need playing beyond the others above, I have far too many review games and nowhere near enough time. Anyone fancy doing my day job for a while? :D

Yesterday I finally finished Batman Arkham Asylum. That game is brilliant. I rented it thinking it might play a bit like a kids game which might explain why I liked it so much. It was so much more than a kids game & probably one of the best games i've played this year. Like last year I never expected to think Uncharted 2 would have been my GOTY, this ones up there this year.

Also just finished RDR today - turns out when I last played a few months back I was actually on the last mission!
Now need to get back to playing New Vegas, but really didn't like those zombie things in that asylum place the last time I was playing!!

So far my 6 yo daughter and I are loving Kinect Adventures and Kinectimals.
I did my first big workout on Your Shape: Fitness Evolved this afternoon and I'm very very impressed. It's quite something and I can see myself sticking with it.
Dance Central is the one we've played least and it's hard (remember I'm an over-weight 36 year old white male and wasn't born for dance!). Very good though.

I played through and finished the Undead Nightmares DLC for RDR last weekend as I was sent the disc from Rockstar. Great story and action, and blowing zombies to bits with a blunderbuss is just plain fun. It's not overly long, probably took me around 8 hours or so, including trying to beat some of the ambient challenges, but it's better than a lot of full games out there, and a great add on to RDR.

Beyond that, I'm kinda inbetween games at the minute. Still have a large stack of review games to get through, but without the motivation to do so. Think I need a kick up the bum to get them done. I quite fancy getting GT5 at some point but there are so many mixed reviews I don't know whether to just wait a while until it comes down in price, or just stick completely with Forza 3 and Hot Pursuit. Decisions decisions.

Streeteh
27-11-2010, 10:07
I'd hardly say it had mixed reviews, look at websites like metacritic and all bar 1 are 80%+. Unless you mean the foaming rants of fanboys and haters on websites around the world which obviously need to be taken with a truckload of salt.

For what it's worth, i like it. It's probably on par with Forza 3 but the greater variety and the fact i can use my DFP push it up above it.

F1 2010 still, now it's patched it's a bit better but even with it's flaws, it's a good fun game and I enjoy playing it.

UFC 2010, just gone back to this, been playing career mode, though i've never really understood the development side of it, my guy has epic stand up abilities, I finish most fights in under a minute but as soon as I hit an opponent who wants to take me down i've no idea how to stop takedowns or how to prevent submissions. I don't think it helps that the other guys have stats in the 70s whereas mine are all in the 30s, even if I am doing the right things, I just don't think I have the stats to counter such things.

Davey_Pitch
28-11-2010, 00:14
Divine, I'm assuming you know that once you've trained a stat to 30, 50 or 70, it won't drop back below those respective levels? I much prefer stand up fighting like you, so can be beaten when taken to the ground, so I worked quickly to get my takedown and submission defence up to 70 so that it won't drop any lower, then improved all my other skills. It made me much harder to beat as I was able to counter a lot of the ground game.

divine
28-11-2010, 00:19
Yeah I have pretty much everything at least at 30 and i'm working on getting a few more up to 50 at the moment (takedown defence and sub defence primarily).

I'm still not sure how to actually counter the moves in open gameplay though :p

I was also pleased to find out that William Sadler voices Victor, and Yes Man is played by David Foley. :) Couple of other famous voices in there I'd already clocked like Kris Kristofferson and Danny Trejo. Quite an eclectic mix!

Final Fantasy XIII

1000/1000 acquired at the weekend.

It didn't click with me when I played it earlier in the year on the PS3 but picked it up cheap again on the 360 after being persuaded by Creature. Absolutely loved it this time and as I should have expected reports that this was a much inferior version and unplayable were grossly exaggerated and I thought it still looked and sounded beautiful.

One of my top 3 games of the year :)

Next on the list: Fallout: New Vegas and Fable 3. Both have been ordered and which ever comes first gets placed first. The 2nd I give my wife to give me back for xmas.

Further to my image, I'm playing DC Universe Online.

It's rather fun, though being typical me I've taken a weird not-one-nor-the-other route in choosing powers and equipment so I'll need to respec soon.

I think I'd describe it as MMO Lite, it's really not hard to get to lvl 30, less than 30 hours work I think it took, though the route from here to being a high class PvP & PvE can take a little longer. There are Hard level alerts (raids) that I'm not even going to attempt yet until I've picked up some T1 armour.

I've played City of Heroes before, but not Champions Online. CoH was fun, but forced you to play in groups. In contrast DCUO has allowed me to reach lvl 30 without once grouping. Now I'm at lvl 30 I spend as much time in groups as I do out of them, either raiding or helping league members with their missions. I like the fact I can play the game how I like and the almost complete lack of a grinding feel to it. Sure most storyline missions entail some kind of "kill x henchmen", but its rare to see a number larger than 20, and typically its < 10. Then you're done and off to a new area. It seems, unscientifically speaking, that you get significantly more XP from completing missions than you do grinding, so mostly you're encouraged to just get on with things rather than run around an area killing the same mobs over and over.

It's a bit beta-ish. Some really irritating bugs crop up occasionally, but they're showing slow and steady progress getting stuff cleared up. Compared to some MMOs I've played on release I think Sony is doing fairly well. Nothing is a real game breaker, but some are intensely frustrating (spend 40 minutes clearing an instance only to have it bug right after you've defeated the boss)

In a number of regards its a fairly straightforward MMO. Typical classes (dps, tank, healer, controller/magician), PvE mobs gathered in relatively constrained areas for no obvious reason, PvP battles and arenas, but combine cool superpowers and great flexibility in costumes with solid but not too long story missions and varied challenges leads to fun.

A gallery of characters can be found here (http://forums.station.sony.com/dcuopc/posts/list.m?topic_id=5207)

I'm not sure the longevity of it, I always find these things hard to gauge. I didn't think I'd play Eve-Online for all that long and I did, and I thought I'd spend a lot of time playing Everquest 2 and I didn't.

Alongside my main character, Stormwalker (superspeed/gadgets/staff), I've got a tank called Crow Quill (flight/fire/brawler) and will be rolling a healer tonight to help with the lack of healers in our league.

Yes indeed, on New Frontier. Latency can be bad enough Hawaii<->Mainland (enough to impact FPS a little bit) without adding in any additional latency sources! I'm running with the Freedom, Liberty And Glory (FLAG), a good sized league with a number of top flight PvPers.

I'm dipping in and out of RDR: Undead Nightmare.

Good times:
- Supernatural...ness adds an interesting twist. Loving the cowboy/zombie crossover and especially the mythical beats (sasquatch, four horses of the apocalypse... even if War did fall off a cliff and die :().
- Plenty of new challenges which really add to gameplay - treasure hunting, sharp-shooting etc. (even though I'm currently having trouble hitting a flying bat with a tomahawk. Whoever came up with that challenge needs scalping).
- Quite challenging gameplay; zombies start out docile enough but then new ones start appearing as you progress that can knock you down, run fast etc.

Bad times:
- Far too many weapons. I don't need five different types of rifle, handgun or shotgun and it's to unwieldy to keep switching between them.
- Regular horses are hard to get hold of if you lose one and undead horses do not want to be ridden. You can use them but not for longer than a couple of minutes before correcting their path becomes tiresome.
- Zombies only die if you get them in the head. Console controllers are not designed for that level of accuracy and you don't always have enough dead-eye to give you the advantage. It kind of adds to the 'realism' I guess but it would be nice if after the fourth of fifth shotgun blast they didn't just get up and start ambling towards you again.
- I thought we'd done away with having to pick x number of flowers from various regions. It's the Zombie Apocalypse, not Gardener's Question Time.
- Having to clear towns of zombies is repetitive and frustrating. Having to clear them again after a number of days is extremely tiresome and makes me wonder if just killing the townsfolk to put them out of their misery would be an easier option.

Overall, enjoyable, but is not without fault.

Another point worth making is that you have to loot every corpse and treasure chest you find to get ammo - no more shops. :( Why you have to be perfectly placed, press a button, and get a small character animation every time you do the loot procedure is beyond me. Simply walking over a corpse to collect ammo is an accepted method in pretty much every game ever created.

AaaaaaaaaaaHAHAhhahahahaah!

I bought Michael Jackson - The Experience for my Wii!

I stopped DIYing an hour ago and have been playing it and I am laughing so much in doing so! It is fuuuuuuuuun!

Dancing is actually quite hard! But then I am lil miss uncoordinated! There's some dance tutorials which utterly crack me up! This one guy, he says "now use as much facial expressions as you can with this move" and the camera pans out to him doing the move and his face is botoxed into one gormless expression during it all! So so funny!

I've done a fair few of the songs now and I'm certain they're dumbed down dancing. Boo! It's actually quite hard to follow what's up next unless you've played the song before. SO much fun though! Hahaha! And due to my carpet I now have carpet burn on my footsies from moonwalking! I need shoooooooooes!

I have had a few minutes on RDR Undead nightmare and have to agree 100% with Belmit. It's not a bad game per se, but so frustrating.

I'm also playing GT5 still, although I have reached a point where I do not have the cars or money to progress through the final races. I have spent some time on the B Spec game, but boy does that suck. For a start the race always lasts about 100% longer than the A Spec, secondly, there's no time lapse mode, so it's all run in real time, and third, your lazy ass driver just seems to want to slow right down unless you constantly give him instructions every 10 seconds.

I'm sure Lewis Hamilton doesn't get "stay at that speed, stay at that speed, stay at that speed, stay at that speed, stay at that speed, stay at that speed, stay at that speed, stay at that speed, stay at that speed, stay at that speed, Speed up, Speed up, stay at that speed, stay at that speed, stay at that speed, stay at that speed, stay at that speed, stay at that speed, stay at that speed, Slow Down, stay at that speed, stay at that speed, stay at that speed, " in his earpiece all race.

Dead Space 2. Waited a few weeks after release even though I really wanted to play it and got it for about £20. Seems to be the way of most games these days that if you just hold off for a short while you can get them practically for half price.

Still pretty scary stuff and so far a decent length, but there seems to be less set pieces, too little puzzle solving re using stasis and anti-grav and not so many suit upgrades. And still too many weapons to choose from.

Highlights, though, have been the opening run where you have no weapons and are stuck in a straight-jacket... the battle with the giant monster after falling through various air ducts, where you get sucked out into space and everything goes silent, still fighting... The emergency eject where you have to control your flight through the space debris to avoid getting splattered... Adjusting the solar panels whilst struggling to top up the air in your suit... and that's about it. Unfortunately the rest has been sub-standard in comparison to the first - seems to be much more linear than before and there's rarely a point where you get surprised by enemies that you can't just die, load the checkpoint, and lay mines in all the places where the enemies are about to jump out from. One improvement though is the new enemy that behaves much like a velociraptor; they're patient, hide in cover and when they emerge are bloody quick. Makes a change from *wall duct bursts open* "Rargh! I'm a horrific blade-armed necromorph! Once I've finished rarghing I'll attack you head on! Oh, my legs are severed...".

One thing it slips in nicely is a brief return to the ship from the original game, although it would have been nice if they'd added a few extra puzzles to the familiar rooms rather than just walking through old territory. Bioshock 2 could have been vastly improved in this way also.

Not quite finished it yet but it may have to do something pretty spectacular towards the end to make me think it's as good as the first. It's still one of the better games out there though and I'd play it again easily over the more realistic shoot 'em ups out there.

Edit: I think I'm on the last level. The big lead up to the end appears to be 'Here's every enemy you already killed in the game to kill again as you make your way down a three-storey room. They will pop out at random points ahead and behind you, some over the gantry and some as if from nowhere. If you die you start the room again.' Lame.

Portal 2 was amazing - finished it in about three sittings of a few hours and each time I stopped was because I was stuck. Taking a break obviously helps because each time I pretty much figured out what I was doing wrong (or not realising what to do right) as soon as I fired it up again. Brilliantly funny as always and Stephen Merchant and JK Simmons just add to that brilliance. An ending that I think could also be described genuinely as 'epic' without falling foul of the recent dilution of the word.

Looking forward to going back and getting achievements and getting some co-op action going on.

I've been playing it since before the CAD blog, only just got around to mentioning it here.

Typical games range from 30-60 minutes, and you need to be able to concentrate for the whole duration.

Should add, if you do play League of Legends (It's free.. why wouldn't you?!) check out http://www.mobafire.com/ for build ideas and strategies. Really helped me get a grasp for certain characters, even if I don't always entirely agree with their build ideas.

Much prefering the series to COD.

I finished Driver yesterday. Brilliant game. The story was fantastic.
I've not yet played the MP side, nor do I have many of the cars but I'm not sure I will ever.

Is it worth trading in whilst theres some new games out that can be had for £9.99 with this trade?
Is Dead Island any good? I've seen Body Count didn't live up to the (mild) hype that it got.

Haly
11-09-2011, 12:30
If you're keen to trade it in while there's still value to it. Trade it in now and keep the credit for the next few weeks.
Dead Island has had mixed reviews and I reckon it'll be down to £20 fairly soon. Bodycount takes about 3hrs to complete and no one's playing the MP!

Fair enough. If thats the case I'll just keep Driver as it'll be fun to just pick up & play for a little while for a long time yet I'm sure. Then I'll just put Dead Island on my LoveFilm list.

Thanks.

Xenoblade Chronicles

Best JRPG of the generation... but it's on the Wii, so technically it's last generation hardware maybe?

I dunno, it's awesome. £30 on release day, 50 hours in and someone just told me i'm less than halfway through the story, value for money or what?

Only about 15hrs :( Some work came up then so had to stop for a bit. I'm seeing it as a long term project really!

Streeteh
17-09-2011, 22:17
15hrs is indeed not even a surface scratch, i meant more in terms of what point in the storyline though? Apparently it takes most people around 200 hours to '100%' it. I'm not aiming for that, but i am doing the sidequests that interest me and it's looking like i'm on track for 100hours to completion which is mental.

Haly

Ahh, Colony 6 :)
The first time round. Assuming what I've heard from people on Twitter means future visits!

I know amongst friends, 80hrs seems to be the average. That's quite a time commitment. Worth it though :D

Streeteh
17-09-2011, 22:24
God, Colony 6 seems like a distant memory, so much has happened since then! The sidequests do get a little overwhealming at one point though, it dawned on me a couple of days ago that i'd not progressed in the storyline at all for three days, i'd just got sucked into getting them all completed in an area.

I'm working my way through this now and I'm finding the same. I'll get stuck, take a break and when I go back to it I'm able to work it out. The tests seem quite a bit more difficult than the first game. Loving the light bridge thing.

I neither like nor dislike Stephen Merchant but he does the characterisation of Wheatley in the style of Justin Lee Collins, who I find highly irritating. Thankfully he hasn't been around much since the opening scenes.

Having lots of fun and loving the acerbic wit of GLaDOS (as you can see from my sig) :D

Uncharted 3.

Epic isn't a strong enough word. Shame they've near enough broken the aiming mechanics though! Any fans of the previous two owe it to themselves to play this, those that didn't like its predecessors, stay away.

I also finally got my hands on a full copy of Tales of Vesperia after years of trying to get it and... i can't bring myself to continue. After playing a top notch JRPG (Xenoblade Chronicles) it pales massively in comparison. I can't help but feel that it was so highly rated due to the lull in JRPGs during the year(s) surrounding its release. I will give it another go once I've completed my other collection of games. So disappointed.

That's a shame Streeteh :( I've not played it since it came out (really must go back to it) so I wonder if you're right about the lull.

I still need to go back to Xenoblade Chronicles too :( Too many games!

In the past month or so, I've played a scary amount of games and that's not including the iOS games (although iPad owners: Buy Monster Burner, it's brilliant). Work's been busy but good :D

Rocketbirds: Hardboiled Chicken: This is a weird little PS3 puzzle platformer that reminds me of Abe's Oddysee. You play a chicken who shoots his way around quite linear levels but there's some nice puzzles in there. Great graphical style too.

Uncharted 3: Only played about half of this as work took over. It's not as good as Uncharted 2 which makes me sad :( I'm not overly surprised though.

Sonic Generations: Blitzed through this over the weekend and submitted my review earlier. Saying it's the best Sonic game in years isn't saying much as besides Sonic Colours, it's been a dodgy few years for Sonic. But it is great fun. The modern Sonic levels are a little iffy in places, especially later on, but it is still very enjoyable. Good purchase for around £20 if you're a Sonic fan!

Battlefield 3: Another one that's been left behind a little bit due to my workload but as I had credit at Blockbuster spare, it seemed daft not to indulge :) The SP is very short at only about 4-5hrs (the neighbours' kid borrowed it at about 1pm on Saturday and had finished it by 6pm ) but I'm liking the look of the MP :D

Batman: Arkham City: I can see why people adore this but I prefer Arkham Asylum. It's tighter and suits my game playing style more so. Arkham City feels a little like it's throwing too many different ideas at me by constantly flinging new villains and side missions at me. I've not got long to go on it and I've heard the ending will make up for it so hopefully that's the case! It's very good, no doubt about that. I just prefer Asylum.

Just Dance 3/Dance Central 2: Erm yeah.....:p Both work related. Dance Central 2 is much more technical and would probably give you a chance of learning to dance, certainly much more so than DC1. Just Dance 3 has the better playlist though and would be easier to play while drunk :D

Kinectimals with Bears: Another work one but a complete guilty pleasure too. It's quite ridiculously cute. Got kids? It's a must buy.

Forza 4: Love it :D But it's fallen behind a bit as so much has been on. That's fine though as it should be an ideal game to play over Christmas time. :D

Gears 3: Another one that I want to find time to play more of, especially while MP has double experience.

On that note though, I'm off to a midnight launch for MW later so I won't have any time anyhow :p

I both love and hate this time of year ;D

Finished Uncharted 3 in two (albeit fairly lengthy) sittings. Looked amazing but could have been a little longer and had more varied gameplay. It's a shame that there's not much to work out when it comes to finding the right path to climb, and almost impossible to make a mistake. Then you get the opposite on the gunplay - lengthy, samey battles where you can be in cover and enemies will happily flank you in plain sight rather than take cover themselves, resulting in fisticuffs while you're still in a heated gun battle. I'm definitely liking using the surroundings to take people out though - more of that please. Defenestration, heads bouncing off shelves, slapping people with a fish from a market stall!

I do like the detail that goes into the story and embellished history though, and it was good to get a bit of back story to Drake and Sully.

Star Wars: Force Unleashed 2

Positives:

Far better port than the first game. Flows smoother, more intuitive, fewer irritating control quirks when playing keyboard/mouse. Graphics nicely improved.

Negatives:

Where to start.. hmm.
'Quicktime' sequences. Still as annoying as the first game, still make no sense post-failure, as if the characters would exit and then re-enter exactly the same sequence. Worse still, unlike the original game the icons to tell you which button you're supposed to press are tiny (at least on a 1920x1080 screen, even one less than an arms length away.) Trying to spot what I was supposed to do, especially on a graphically busy screen was an exercise in near futility. Also, unlike on the original one, the keys pressed rarely had any correlation between their normal function and what happened in the game. e.g. in the original when fighting a balrog if the quicktime told you to press Q it actually did something related to force lightning, just like during a normal game.

Trivial story line, Starkiller in pursuit of a girl. The original had layers of intrigue and a character I felt some tie to.. this didn't. I really didn't give a crap if he got the girl or not.

Smacks of low(er?) budget production. Additional dialogue was restricted to only a few characters. Speaking of dialogue, Starkiller almost reached Anakin Skywalker levels of petulant teenager whine. Really began to get on my nerves, to the point where I really just wished Vader would kill him already.

Absurdly short. I completed it on normal difficulty in one and a bit evenings (made it to the big battle yesterday even though I had to alt+tab out and sort out something at work for half an hour, and then finished it today) I'm glad I waited until the price was much lower than release or I'd have been really irritated.

Rather easy. I'm going to try another run through on higher difficulty levels but for the most part I found it almost ludicrously easy. Fight sequences against groups of enemies? No problem just keep clicking the mouse over and over again and vaguely move in the direction of them. In the first game that was a good way to die, not so much this game. I only died maybe 6-7 times in total, a few of those were from misjudging jumps. I'm a good gamer, but I'm not that good.
The only thing that presented any challenges were the odd scripted events such as the Tram ride and so on.
When there are games like Arkham Asylum out there, fighting SWFU2 leaves a lot to be desired, it's almost like it was a cinematic addition rather than the main narrative.

Currently flicking between several games...

Fifa 12 - best one of the series so far, though it takes some getting used to as the AI is much tougher than it used to be. Scoring is a challenge but that just makes it much more enjoyable when you manage to score a cracker.

WWE 12 - also the best of the series so far, having been rebranded from the Smackdown vs Raw series. A great Universe mode, which generates shows and PPVs depending on your actions, and it's very organically done. Jump someone before a match? Expect some retribution. Help someone out a few times? Watch the friendship grow until you can become tag team partners. Great game, very enjoyable.

Saints Row The Third - totally batsh*t crazy! It starts off with one of the most insane intro missions ever, and just carries on from there. It has the same awesome activities as in previous games (including my fave - Insurance Fraud - which involves throwing yourself in front of cars to cause as much harm to yourself as possible), and the missions (so far) are varied, enjoyable, and downright funny.

The Elder Scrolls - Skyrim - I can sum this up in one word - wow! A simply incredible game with a scope that's beyond compare. I've put in well over 120 hours and still don't feel like I've completed half the game yet. Everywhere you go there is something to see, a cave to explore, a ruin to find, an enemy to kill, or ingredients to collect. The combat is vastly improved over Oblivion, the perk system (stolen from Fallout) is a great addition, and the organic levelling system (use an ability a lot, you increase your skill in it) means your character builds naturally to suit your play style. Quite possibly my game of the year so far, though Dark Souls and Dead Space 2 are way up there as well.

I never got on with the original (I suck at stealth, generally) but enjoyed the second one (despite it being quite limited) and this has the best elements of both!

It's not insurmountably difficult, but it's not so easy I can play it with my eyes shut (yes, Bioshock, I'm looking at you!) and am employing a good amount of stealth and gung ho :)

Arkham City

Good sequel to the sublime Arkham Asylum, this time without the slightly amnesiac batman from the first game, so you actually start off with a good set of equipment and capable of doing the kinds of things he's been doing in comic books, film and TV for years.

+vs

Combat was still as much fun as the first game, but with increased complexity. This time you can frequently have multiple enemies trying to hit you at the same time, no polite waiting for you to counter one guy and re-compose yourself between attacks.
Plenty of challenges to cope with too with a lot more mini-bosses to learn handle.
Great quality animation and voice acting. Mark Hamil excels as Joker, shame it was his final story.
Wide open city, plenty of opportunity to just go off and beat on some random criminals if you fancy. No more scripted routes.

-vs

Batman's radioing Oracle and Alfred rarely added anything. In the first game it felt like there was a logical reason for all of his radio communications. In AC it felt like they just wanted to re-iterate the story plot a bit. It also made Batman feel like a desperate attention seeker at times, desperately seeking approval from Oracle in particular for anything even remotely clever that he'd done. I was torn between feeling sorry for his apparently fragile psychee and wanting to punch him in that smug mouth.
Frikkin middle-click again. Its a really bad choice of a button for anything under Windows. I've no fancy mouse software installed, just the generic windows drivers and every time I middle click Arkham City un-fullscreens and then re-fullscreens with an annoying 5-10s pause. With explosives it was annoying. With fight sequences it lead to my unnecessary death a number times until I managed to find all the things they'd assigned to it and reconfigure them to use something else. You can't re-assign keys in game either, you have to exit out, reconfigure and then reload the game.
There were a few occasions, mostly in side missions, where it felt like they'd just ripped stuff out of AA wholesale and just altered the character models.
The annoying "Ha ha, you're dead" cutscenes are back. I know I'm dead, your gloating face just wastes time that could be spent reloading.
Catwoman. Why was she even in the game? Complete waste of time, added nothing to the game that a brief cutscene couldn't have done a better job of.
Plot felt disjointed. I seemed to spend a whole bunch of time going from one side of the city to the other just to progress the story arc. Lots of unused space in the middle of the city. At times it didn't really feel cohesive, more like they'd had a few ideas for set pieces and were trying to make the story fit it.

I know there are more -vs that +vs in my list, but it really is a totally enjoyable game. The negatives are more irritations than deal breakers. It's hard not to get pleasure out of stalking around the room picking people off one by one, or wading deep into a fight with 20+ bad guys and walking out the other side with only a bruise or two to show for it.

Wow, first post in this thread this year! :o

Right now, I'm currently bouncing between a few games...

Kingdoms of Amalur - a fabulous open world RPG, which I never would even have thought about playing if it wasn't for the fact that playing the demo unlocked some items in Mass Effect 3. Very Fable-esque in the way it plays, with it's mixture of weaponry and magic, with so many missions to do. It's definitely the deep game I was looking for after finishing Mass Effect 3.

Sniper Elite V2 - literally about to play this (I'm waiting for my pre-order DLC to download while I type this). I loved the demo, so hopefully will really enjoy the full release.

Fifa 12 - when I ever not really playing a Fifa game?

The Walking Dead - episode 1 of a 5 part series, I loved it more than I thought I would. I'm a huge fan of everything Walking Dead anyway (the comics especially), so to be able to be a part of the world was a great experience for me. I'm looking forward to seeing how my choices affect the game down the line.

Trials Evolution - I've already beaten every track in the game, now I just hit it up every now and then to try and get more gold medals. Every bit as amazing as the original was.

Wow, first post in this thread this year! :o

I've been meaning to post in here for ages :o And PM you too! Doh.

I've been playing quite a lot lately. Usually in short doses as my attention span seems to be shot.

Saints Row: The Third: Finished this a few days ago but bought all the DLC for it now. Love it :D It's ridiculously silly and so much more lighthearted than the Grand Theft Auto series. Nice steady trickle of achievements too. I've got Saints Row 2 to switch to afterwards.

Fable Heroes: I'm a Fable fangirl so this was a no brainer download earlier :p Only played it briefly so far and I can see why it's had average reviews. It is very basic from what I've seen but I like co-op hack n slashers and can see it being handy when my cousins are around and we're in need of a game.

Skullgirls: Not the normal kind of thing I'd play but I was reviewing it (for a magazine, yay!). Beat em up fans will love it. It's tough to master, even on the easiest difficulty level, but very rewarding for the patient soul.

The Walking Dead: Wasn't overly fussed by the TV show but heard great things about this so thought I'd give it a shot. Loved it! Love games that offer such difficult and thought provoking decisions. Can't wait to see future episodes.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Davey's summed up how I feel really :) It reminds me of a single player World of Warcraft which is ideal. Side quests do feel pretty neverending though so I can see myself playing it in short doses more than anything. In about 3 years, maybe I'll have finished every side quests ;D

Trials Evolution: I'm enjoying this more than Trials 2 HD, probably because I'm slightly better at it :P Love competing with friends! Another one I'm mostly playing for 30 minutes here or there. Seems to work out better for me to finish a few tracks then come back later.

I know... I'm posting in a computer game thread!

However, over the past month or so I have played Driver San Francisco a few times and really rather like it. It's simple. It's not like GTA, the story is a little marmite, but the scenery, cars and graphics are great, and if you want to drive around San Francsico it's fantastic fun! :D Especially some of the old US Muscle cars like the GTO, Shelby Mustang and Charger or even "the Judge"

Not that I have much time to play games, what with having a house to run, keep fit, cook and look after a princess.... however, when I do, it's a nice bit of escapism.

I've been enjoying Goldeneye that I got for the Wii - just an epic epic game which my friends and I used to play on the N64 about a million years ago, it's still probably one of my favourite FPS (though the last one I really played to death was Wolfenstein ;D ) - just don't have much space for playing it or time unfortunately. I want to get back to it as over Christmas you couldn't rip me away from it.

It's a little crap on a keyboard, but the "feel" for drifting, handling, braking etc... feels pretty realistic to me. Not that I've ever drifted, powerslided or driven like a cock before ;) :p The frames per sec vs. actual speed of cars going past you don't really equate... i.e. you could be doing 120mph, and cars doing 50mph and you don't feel like you're going 70mph faster when overtaking.... but I hear there have been a lot of issues with that - I need to tweak my gfx settings.

Sniper Elite V2 - I love these for the ballistics & physics. I hate them for the 90s style of gaming, like enemies aren't in any way dynamic. You reach a line on the map, and guys spawn. There was also a point where I kept getting kills by some guy that always appeared off my right when I wasn't looking and he was silent until that shot fired. Still enjoying it though.

BF3 - This still spends a lot of time in my disc tray. Perfect companion to Sniper Elite.

I had to shut it down and close my eyes for about an hour before I felt better. I have had nausea before from games, but nothing like that. I've now deleted it off the PS3...

So I'm still playing GT5... I want to find the time to get to level 35 or whatever it is so I can do the Le Mans 24 hours. Then I'll get a couple of mates around and we'll do it straight through. It'll be boring as sh*t in reality, but it sounds fun at the moment :D

Really good fun. As with most games I put it straight on to the highest available difficulty and 'free aim' instead of assisted aim (which is 'soft' or 'hard').

Its brilliant, difficult, but not off putting whilst it kills you (lots). It also does something that I don't know if I've ever seen. It doesn't give you a tardis of a pocket or an inventory system. Your arsenal is burdened by your ability to actually carry guns by hand. (or if they've got a strap, sling them over your shoulder!)

Only played through the first 3 chapters yesterday so now I'm off to play some more :D

Picked it up this morning and had a quick play whilst waiting for a 85GB VM to copy, only playing it on medium but still dying lots, though unlike most other games it's not frustrating as rather than waiting for the game to reload it puts you right back in the action to try again so it doesn't feel like a punishment.

I'm sure it's been done in a few games before although possibly not to the same level, I seem to recall in Soldier of Fortune being unable to carry all weapons at any one time. Ok, it was still unrealistic but it was some sort of nod to a limitation.

Been playing a fair bit of Battlefield 3 recently and enjoying lots :) Just got to work out why it crashes after each map switch.

Like Muban I'm also waiting for the next Guild Wars 2 beta weekend :) Played the last one and loving the game :) It's gonna be fab when it comes out and probably take up way too much of my time.

Rock Band 3!

Some Iron Maiden epics were released as dlc today, it would be rude not to!

Dragon's Dogma. It's neverending! Although at least that means it's good value for money I suppose :D But crap when you're working on a deadline alongside a pile of other things :p

I've just started, after finally upgrading my home PC enough to just about run the graphics (:)) Empire Total War. It's bin in my drawer for 2 years or so and now I finally get to play it my impression is....... it's a bit ruined, if you ask me. Shogun 1 was fantastic, Medieval was good, M2 was ok, but Empire is just too big to faff around with and, for all the advances in the engine, the actual battles are not much different from Shogun 1. It's now more focussed on the administration and Civ style advancement than the actual "total war" bit

Also just restarted Skyrim after a couple of months off. About 28 active quests and no idea who or what anything is any more! Funny when you go to a place you don't even remember and someone says 'Ah, my old drinking buddy!'. Who are you?!

Also restarted Alan Wake on hard. I seem to remember normal being hard so should be fairly challenging.

I've gone back to Company of Heroes, Well I say I've gone back when really I didn't give it a good play first time round. This time I'm lost in the whole RTS WW2 atmosphere & am loving working my way through the Campaigns.

Other than that it's a bit of BF2 as I'm back on that as well these days. I'm so Retro. ;D

Was looking to get GW2 but they underestimated the demand so there is a major shortage of copies around the place at moment, so bit of a wait until i can give it a go.

I finished Sleeping Dogs a few days ago, and absolutely loved it. It's the first game in a couple of years that I've loved enough to 100%, and get all the achievements more. Would love for some story based DLC to come out for it in the future.

Beyond that, not really much else. Kinda between games while I wait for Fifa 13 to come out. May go back into Skyrim as I haven't picked up the DLC for that yet, same goes for Mass Effect 3 as well.

Tomb Raider which was a pretty action game but not a Tomb Raider game - sweet FA in the tombs line and bugger all puzzles :(

Currently mashing my way through Bioshock Infinite - fun :D
