View Full Version : Looks like Virgin are responding well to the loss of Sky

Just called Virgin Media about how much it would cost to almalgamate our services to one provider, I was hoping we could get a good deal but the website wanted ~£70 for Medium TV package, Phone and 10mb BB.
Right now we're all over the place, phone is BT, TV is Sky and BB is Virgin Media. I think we're paying about £20pcm for the phone, Sky is £18pcm just for 4 of their 'blocks' which is a reduction on what we had before channels wise and BB is £35pcm, so we're looking at ~£72 which is quite a lot.
The bloke I spoke to at Virgin (took 30 seconds to connect, no hold music) Initially said £47 for the lot which would include
10Mb BB
Lowest phone package - Free Weekend calls
Lowest TV package - missing the Living channels - so no America's Next Top Anorexic Witch (Bonus for me but might annoy H)
Then he fiddled with a few things - I didn't ask him to; to be honest I was stunned by the price.
He then said actually we can get that down to £46, I was a bit :/ - a quid off big deal! but he said to do that he'd up'ed the TV to the maximum package, no PPV channels but pretty much everything else which reduced the BB cost, so now we can watch America's Next Top Whore 9 times a day - Groovy :undecided:
So thats a £25 saving, right now I pay for the BB and Sky out of my account so rather than £53 I will be paying £46 and Heather wouldn't have to pay for the phone at all! So she's saving £20pcm, not bad huh?
So we lose Sky One and a few other channels but we get to stop funding Murdoch the Nazi and get to give our money to the beardy jumper wearing hot air balloonist! :D
Its nice to see a company offering decent discounts and deals to existing customers rather than shafting them.
If anyone thinks this is a good deal and can get Cable I have the codes for the deal which is apparently quite well hidden, you need to quote L171T03 and L271D02 :)

Give it a month or so then ring up and moan, they will drop the price again ;)
Got my 10meg TV & phone in the thirtys. Brilliant speeds on BB since day one i love 'em.
I do like the idea of Dicky B running the show and taking the dough aswell it makes me feel all British & Proud.
Dicky B is the man, i watched an interview recently with him on & it said he was worth 3 Billion  which he never denied either. Top dude in my books. His comment i liked best was that they (virgin) look for gaps in the market where they feel the customer is being ripped off & Virgin can offer better deals & he just loves taking on the big guys such as BA etc.
Sounds good :)
My parents managed to go from £55 a month for 4mb BB, phone line and what's now the medium TV range (but on NTL was slightly above the cheapest one) to £35 a month for 4mb BB (Which the guy on the phone said was an upgrade from 2mb....but we've had 4mb BB for ages so who knows what went on there), phone line with free evening and weekend calls and the XL TV Package which has everything but Sky Movies/Sky Sports on it.
Was hoping they'd barter to get a deal with the 10mb BB but I think they got confused so my Dad thought they were already getting faster BB through this deal.
However, we've got to phone them up in a couple of months about an extra box for my room, and we've been customers for years so have to see if we can sway them then ;)
What's the deal with IP addresses on Virgin? For remote access reasons I need one that doesn't change much (I know I can use the likes of dyndns, but they decided to block my account for some silly reason, but I suspect I can get it back).
I reckon I'd be saving about 50% going for that deal.

Mine has changed once in about a zillion & fifty years but you do get bounced around on certain sites claiming you are proxy **** off.
I reckon the proxy is to avoid something else rather than changing customers I.P.s
One of the clever ones can clarify.
Yup - 'NTL' uses lots of proxy servers. I know about that one. I'm in an ex-NTL area, not ex-BY. I use my own proxy anyway, so not much change there.
Only problem I have with cable is living in an upstairs flat. They've installed cable downstairs, but I'm not sure what's involved in getting it to me.
They should go upstairs fine. My housemate upstairs has a seperate account and they installed it fine, although I didn't notice how they got the cable upstairs.
Our IP has only changed when I reboot the modem, and the last time I did that it didnt change anyway.
Instead of a dyndns service (which I just dont like) I have a bit of VB that uploads my current WAN IP address to some hosting every now and again. If it does change without me knowing, then I can at least find it easy enough :)
Ooh, yes. I could shove a nameserver on my box (had one on the old one) and host a DNS zone on that. Good idea, sir. :)

I'm in an upstairs flat and they simply trail the cable up the outside wall :) You don't even notice it though unless you're looking for it.
I had a package through the door tis morning saying this Virgin Media is being installed next week :/ I guess MtE has cunning plans afoot...I didnt realise they did all the other stuff though. I'd be interested in the phone but the Sky 'package' I have (all channels) is here to stay, at least until they change the cards again. I cancelled the subscriptin about 4 years ago but they forgot to physically switch it all off so it costs me nuffink! \o/

A tidier idea than mine for sure :)

Ahh thought it might be something like that. :)
I didn't really pay attention to how he was doing it, until I realised I had no net connection and he had to go out to a box across the road to boost the strength of the line or something like that. Really we should have split the net connection between the two of us and saved money, but you know how communicative that housemate is ;)

OMFG
I just spent ten minutes on the phone to Sky trying to justify why I wanted to leave. At one point I actually said to the woman "just cancel my package" she retorted with "its going through but I just wanted to clarify a few points about how we will be cheaper than VM.
To which I retorted "can you do this whilst I continue to DL 200Gb of data a month through your BB system, because I don't think you can ;)"
She actually tried to tell me that Sky were not going to impliment a fair usage policy when they buy their own exchange equipment later this year.
I told her if VM implement a fair usage policy and they can later in the year promise me that they won't I might consider coming back.
I can believe the ammount of effort they put in to customer retention and how good the woman was at it, she had answers for everything apart from the fair usage policy issue, if it wasn't for that and the fact I have an install date from VM I might have considered staying, as it is I can always go back to them. I still have the Sky hardware and can always go back when my contract with VM ends in the meantime it will give me freeview indefinately as she says that won't be cancelled :)

Hmm.. now thats an idea. Could you pass a copy of the script to me?
I'll probably do some funky magic later with bash scripting on my *nix box to achieve the same function but for now would be handy.
I could do, but it doesn't actually query the web as such - it parses the syslog from my Draytek, so nothing special.
Could set something up on the BD server though I suppose, just to bounce the IP back. Quick html/php page and then wget that back locally.

Yeah, that too, though I hear they dont like people programmatically accessing their site. Much like www.dnsstuff.com
I think I'll give VM a ring this weekend. At the moment we are paying £35 for evening and weekend calls, 2 MB BB and what must be the basic TV package (out TV on demand doesn't seem to work any more, either teleport OR virgin's choice channel)
What should i say? We've only been with them since June last year

Well with VM I (including jarp and the Antipodean Midget) get 4MB (unrestricted) BB, the top TV package and free weekend calls all for £40pm... Just tried to call Pipex again today - they still owe me money not much mind you but its the principle!
Almost fell off my chair when my call was answered after one ring and not after a 30/40min wait.
Turns out they are having problems with their systems internally.
Always worrying when they are your ISP. :/

Crikky.. I just went to cancel Sky because I've opted for a Virgin package and they counter offered..
All channels inc sports and movies
Free telephone 24/7
upto 16mb
£58 per month
Only have to pay a one fee of £49 for sky plus
+10.50 for BT land line
Tempting still.

I have stuff downloading around the clock (unlimited usage) & we browse at the same time on a super-duper speedy fast rate. We just don't have a problem. Before we went to VM we got letters monthly saying that we were 80/100g over our usage allowance :D Have the same as you 4mg, and just checked, 380k sustained download rate as usual. I had a brochure pack through the door today from VM - have been looking to change/consolidate for some time now. Got freeview so not all that bothered with the TV stuff.
Like the look of the Talk anywhere phone, includes 0845 mobiles and international no.s and the Large BB would be fine for me.
Just had a scan through the Acceptable Use Policy and nothing jumps out at me as being out of the norm - but i did only scan it
Policy is fine for VM :)
Sky is the nasty one, if they catch you ;)
My Newsgroups sit at a solid 1200 KB/s most of the time although they do take a hit in the evening due to contention (everyone is one the net) but hey if I D/L during the day and watch films at night I can pretty much fill up my hard drive with movies :)

Don't know to be honest but i am very persuasive. I think basically i have every right to push for discount. I do it everywhere as well, down town, markets whatever or whoever. If they won't give me a discount on something i am buying i will pull a coin out and try to get them to toss for it, they win i pay double, i win i pay nothing. Not lost one yet & my last freebee was an italian frying pan i wanted. Huge great thing very solid with an excellent handle but i wan't going to pay over 20 quid for it. Kin ell dude that is dear man i said, i tell you what and got my coin out, in the air it spins and comes down my way, cheers i said, have you got a bag :D Geezer just looked at me and said you cheeky sod ;D
I have a lot of front and embarrass most people and some mates and x girlfs refuse to shop with me. Basically you have to remember the mark up and kick them in the sacks, never swear and always make it fun. If all this don't work then i just say **** you & your prices and go elsewhere ;D
Turns out that Orange have been trying to phone me everyday this week and I seem to be missing their calls. Well I answered tonight and it was a courtesy call to see how my BB was.

People like us on VM might want to try this (http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=393940).......
XL TV package with V+ (free installation)
Unlimited talk phone package
2Mb Broadband (basic)
£45 a month
not bad - well don Pheebs ;)
Like the sound of that, though a bit more BB oomph would be needed in this household. :)
Thinking of threatening to cancel Sky on Monday in the hope of half price for three months, then cancelling it for real thereafter and moving. Just hope I don't shoot myself in the foot with VM deals by doing that.
well this would be grand, except there appears to have been a fault when they upgraded us to XL, and we now can only get channels 1-5... technician coming around Thursday to sort it. FFS
Nice haribo! We now have full TV package. We have to wait for Saturday 31st for our V+ box to come though... boo
We just pay £90
VIP Package - XL TV + Sports + Movies
10meg BB
Talk unlimited
2*V+ boxes
Superb :)
Heads up!:
Proggy on channel 5 about VM vs BT and Macs vs Pcs etc! NOW! :D

hmmm see i didn't think about all that with cable - wonder how they will do it as i don't want a load of wires everywhere!
There will be 1 wire which comes into your house then they split it off from there for t'internet and TV :) if you have another box upstairs like us they'll send the other cable off from there too.
So will i still be able to use my wireless router to beam t'internet wirelessly everywhere?
You might be able to use your wireless router, depends if you can set it up as an access point. I actually bought a new router, DI514 off ebay for around 20 notes which is a DSL/cable wireless router :)

hmmm see i didn't think about all that with cable - wonder how they will do it as i don't want a load of wires everywhere! Still see soon enough they will be here tomorrow.
I have 3 different cables run into my house, 1 is for t'internet and is nicely pinned along the wall/skirting, up the stairs and into my room. Other 2 are literally just boxes on the wall, one for the phone and one for the TV. Had both Telewest and NThelL engineers come round to fit now and they're usually nice lads, always ask where you want things and do a good tidy job :)
So will i still be able to use my wireless router to beam t'internet wirelessly everywhere?
Is it a router with the input being RJ45 or is it a router modem with the input being RJ11? If the former then it'll be no problem, just plug the output ethernet from the modem (supplied) into it and surf away :) If the latter then you'll need to get a new router m'afraid.

I should have given this more thought!
I wonder if they will put two BB cables in as at the moment the internet as it's on the phone line can be accessed anywhere there is a phone socket. but the comps are in the back room, however once another baby comes along then this room will no more be my command centre and the comps will have to be moved into the front bedroom.
As far as I'm aware then they'll only put in one cable for the broadband... Although depending on the layout of your house and where the cable is routed in then you could just move the cable yourself... Although if you have a wireless router plugged into it then does it really matter where the actual hardware is?
Its a modem router in one - but it has what i would call an RJ45 socket and then the socket you put the phone line into. Under what i would call the RJ45 socket it says 10/100Base-T MDI/X - that plugs into my main pc as a wired connection.
I have a Thompson Speedtouch 570v4 (http://whirlpool.net.au/index.cfm?a=h_view&model_id=106)
I also have a Linksys WAG354G
Anyone in the know, know if either of these will work
Both of those are ADSL modem/routers. Which is a problem. You need something with a WAN input and LAN output. Basically the WAN is where the internet connection is received by the router before being 'routed' (HAHAHAHAHAH) to the LAN.
This (http://www.netgear.com/Products/RoutersandGateways/WiredRouters/RP614.aspx) is what I am currently using (prefer a wired network) although I do have a verr expensive wireless Netgear RangeMax router kicking about somewhere (stole it off my brother but the USB wireless network card is bobbins)
which is probably the kind of thing you're going to need...
Yup, the stuff Leo's linked is what you're after.
Sadly, the Speedtouch definitely won't work. The Linksys is at least doubtful as well. :(

Entirely up to you harib0 if you buy it from them. I had never set one up before myself but bought the router and got it working, I have since setup Kitten's mum's and that worked fine. Depends how much you could get one for yourself and you don't really have to worry about supporting it, the cable modem does the work your router is just for your internet in your house. You just setup the DHCP. DNS and that is pretty much it :)
For example there are things like this (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Netgear-NTL-Telewest-WGR614-G-Wireless-Router-54MB_W0QQitemZ120099511224QQcategoryZ44997QQrdZ1QQ cmdZViewItem) which seem to go for around £20-25 so it's a saving of a tenner.

Next on my list is the Cable/DSL router.... Leo has given me an idea of one on ebay....... for all you others on cable what DSL router do you have or would you recommend?
I have a Linksys jobbie that I picked up from Pissy World for a pittance, you don't need a DSL specific router just a wireless router with an internet input, loads here, some under £30

I think the M is the small one (if that makes sense!). I only need up to 2Mb because I don't really download much.

cheers for all the help so far guys, looking in to routers.
Another question is this PCguard any good worth installing?
Made a major dent in my computer's speed, you're better off with AVG or similar and a spyware killer IMHO

I tried to get them to offer, now I know why they didn't. :/
Wonder what the minimum term is for the sports package on VM (not that I can do it at the moment as the engineer can't actually access the most likely cable entry point right now).

I don't think there is a mimimum term to be honest. If you bought prem-plus then that is 12 months but I think you can chop and change your movies and sport each month.
Looks like Sky are worried. Had 3 calls from Sky begging me to go back to them for 1/2 price packages for a year/6 months, and 3 postal offers.
Hmmmmm. Had our bluff called have we?
I'm not surprised. I read on the BBC news site that advertisers on Sky are asking for their advertising fees to be lowered due to the lack of VM viewers watching it. :D
Ah, sod it.
M Phone
XL TV
XL Broadband
£47
I think that's their standard deal though so is there any room to do better?
Either way it's better than the £82 I'm on now (though I also shaved £10 off that last week).
£10 credit? What's that - never heard of that. :)
And yes, over the phone. There's an offer of free TV upgrade for a year on right now (dunno how long it'll last - I hope long enough).

On and on and on and on and on and on.
Such a terrible, terrible, shame, on both counts.
Not.

Yep.. my internet speed is going up to 20mbps from 1st May.. £2 extra.. However talkunlimited comes down to just £9.95 the difference will be cheaper for me.
I had heard I could get a second box installed for free.. but this does not appear to be the case :(
Hurrah! Today I got all my channels! Cor! Lots!
Excellent :D
I returned to Stafford today to find that my box had updated itself and now has different colours and the virgin logo on the channel select screens. Weird thing is the one in Swansea hasn't yet so not sure if they're rolling out the update area by area
dunno - we got ours two days before the rollout startedx downstairs, but not til 6 weeks later upstairs....
Spooky!
I like it though, and had a poke around all the TV on demand stuff last night. Very impressive :D Only thing that seemed to cost anything was the movies. Watched the Best of Top Gear and the first episode of Father Ted instead of crap that was on TV :D

They tried it on with me the other day.
I got a letter informing me that i haven't been paying line rental for months and my bill would now be going up 11 quid a month. They apologised for the mistake and said as it's there fault they won't ask for back pay ;D
So i rolled a fat one and hit 150 for a chat, i gave them my normal self and told them my price had been gaurenteed for 12 months. She said she understands that but i am paying much to less for the services i get. I told her i don't give a flying **** what you think i should be paying or what others are paying, All i care about is that i have been with them since day one and they are offering better deals to new customers, Now sort it out.
So she went of on a wander/chat to boss type thingy and came back and has lowered my bill from what it was before :D & gaurenteed the price for the next 12 months.
So 10 meg TV pack and House phone for 30 quid a month for the next 12 months. They write me a letter putting the price up & i phone them getting the price not only back down to what it was before but lower
Am a happy chappy again.
have a look on the movies special offers, they are doing the 1p movie atm, there's usually a couple of muppets movies and i think it's Nacho Libre at the moment :D
Oooh I feel right in the mood for something silly and funny :D Might get one of those tonight.
I've got to cancel it soon and pay off 3 months in one go so might as well enjoy it while I can :D

Has anyone noticed that their broadband connection dropping recently.. I've jhad to do a couple of resets over the last few days..???
Wonders if it's anything to do with the TV OD service or the bit-torrent client i'm running.
Definitely not had a problem in Swansea, don't think the connection's dropped there in about 6 months or more.
Only been in Stafford a day so dunno about that.
Good as gold here, though it's only a 2MB.

More likely to be some fiddling on the UBR in preparation for the 20Mb upgrade :)

Well last night my 4MB (now there's a scary concept :p) connection with vigin dropped to around 512k speeds :(
This morning it's crept up to 1.2MB (slightly less scary :p)..
*sigh*
This better not last :/
My speed seems to be rather temperamental today too. Guessing they must be up to something.
I want cable, but we only had the sewers plumbed in in Banbury last year. It's like the middle ages here sometimes. :(

Well Virgin have managed to seriously impress me.
I just called them now to arrange cancelling my contract as I'm moving out on May 17th. I expected to be charged 3 months rental as I'm cancelling 9 months into my contract.
I explained that I'm returning to my parents's house and that they're already on Virgin.
The guy on the phone explained that was fine and that as they were existing customers they'd waiver all charges and I wouldn't have to pay a thing. :D
Very impressive, I was expecting to pay 3x£30 to pay off the rest of the contract as I know that's the case with other providers.
After all the students of today are the next generation of customers imo!
Indeed! And I have a very good memory for remembering companies that are nice to me :)
My Career Development loan is with Barclays unfortunately :/ So the next 6 months or so may decide a lot for how much I ever use them again ;D
I never really had a problem with NTL pre Virgin but certainly after that, and the fact they answered within a matter of 5 seconds, does make me wonder if they've improved. :)
Need to call Virgin, our box keeps spitting out the card for some reason, mixtures of 'it's not inserted' and 'it's invalid' messages. It's frozen a couple of times too.

I see Jen's been onto them then ;D
 I have friends in high places ;D
Swansea tends to get stuff to do with NTL early on, it's handy :D Been with them since the days of cabletel

No mention of Leytonstone either (unless we come under one of the obscurely named London ones...).
Does seem that I've been suffering from sub-dial-up speeds this weekend though, although it depends which speedtest I use :/ Lowest reading was 13.6kb/s
*further sighing*

At the end of the day to take advantage of these speeds on my main machine I'll have to switch to 200Mbps powerline networking, the wireless only delivers 10Mbps throughput when its supposed to to be operating at 54Mbps so anymore won't be accessable andI can't run a cable into the cellar because of the tanking :/

Client Host Name: cpc2-walt5-0-0-cust871.popl.cable.ntl.com
I'm guessing that means Poplar.. so May for us hopefully :)
Matblack

Yes that a Poplar UBR code, it looks like the ex-NThelL UBRs are getting done first, I thought you were Telewest there not NT-helL, no wonder Dym was saying you get rubbish speeds at times.
MB
I think it's entirely dependent on area, in Stafford my connection's not been the greatest, had a few days of it not working, and quite a few days of it being sluggish.
While in Swansea haven't had a problem in so long I can't remember when it was. And speed has always been consistent.
Both ex-NTL UBRs.
The upgrade page says its for XL customers which is the 10mb line.
I'm on the 4mb line - anyone know if theres a planned upgrade for us slower speed customers?
