View Full Version : Decided to give this newsgroup malarky a whirl
And so far, I'm a little lost. Thought I'd give it a go for a month (Easynews) and see how I got on with it instead of torrents. So far, I'm struggling to find which newsgroups actually contain what I want.
So where should I be looking guys? Regularly I want TV shows (I'm short 1 24 Episode for example), music by British artists (Bloc Party, The Rakes and Maximo Park all have albums out or imminent that I want), I'll want to download C&C3 when it comes out (buying it on 360 is enough) and the very occasional film. Where do you suggest I look? :)
[edit]Oh, and Dee wants Rollercoaster Tycoon (which I could download via torrent at the moment), so that's a good place to start as well :)
I'd go with giganews tbh :)
http://www.giganews.com/
If I had a credit card I'd sign up in a shot. They have 1200 days retention and all the bells and whistles. My sister's BF downloads all the latest blu-ray/HD DVD films and TV shows.
They still access the same newsgroups dont they?
No I think Giganews is totally separate.
Ah sorry - in some ways yes, but it accesses more - 85,000 to be precise (hopefully).
With 100 days binary retention and 1300 days text retention.
I think I've got a copy of Rollercoaster Tycoon on the external hd if you want it.
Although I've just packed it and won't have a cd burner till the weekend but can sort you out then if you want. :)

Its a few pence for the service but its really useful, get yourself a copy of Grabit as well :) http://www.shemes.com/
Then download the .nzb files from Newzbin and open them in Grabit
Thats all you need ;)
If you want to give Newzbin a try without paying I can lend you my ID for a while.

Seconded .... I use Newzbin and always find them the site very good.
If you dont mind paying for a download client i can vouch for NewLeecher
Newshosting.com might be worth looking at as well as Giganews
I wouldnt mind a look MB if that's possible, or if you'd prefer to keep that info private I could give you some things to hunt for? Your call :)
Torrents are becoming a bit more of a chore, I'm just not sure I'll have access to such a large amount of files over newsgroups.

If Haly doesn't have a copy of RCT (the original) then I can give you a copy, the only thing is that it sometimes has a problem loading save games from what I can recall so you might have to play through a complete level in one sitting which can take a while. :)
Cheers for the offers guys, if I fail in my newsgroup quest, and the torrent option I have is crap, then I'll post again :)

I've got RCT3 as an ISO file I can burn and pop in the post, just say the word if you need it :)
Thanks dude :)
Dont worry about your account MB, never realised how cheap it was, I'll take a punt and have a look around :)
Another thumbs up for Newzbin here :)
Easynews you say? You'll be wanting this then
http://members.easynews.com/global
Search away dude, search away.
Easynews is a good intro to newsgroups, I used them for several years.
Newzbin + Newsleecher (supersearch facility is ace) + Giganews subscription is one of the best combination though, its what I use anyway.
For what I need, the simplicity of Easynews is what keeps me there :)
Why am I just getting a load of 0 byte text files instead of some real data :dunno: Only thing that's worked so far is a Maximo Park album.
[edit]It seems to be just oldish posts, say 2 or 3 weeks. Anything recent is coming though ok /touches wood

Sound like the retention on your provider sucks :/
The older a post the less chance of it still being on the server but usually with a good provider you can go back a long way.

I cant seem to download episode 13 of 24 day 6 without it either having CRC errors or containing Spanish subtitles :/

If you want just post up what you are looking for and we can use newzbin to find the files then download the NZB file and send it to you so you can download the files
Only down fall will be if your server retention is as crap as it seems you wont find the files
Im away every other weekend so if you want to use my Newshosting account your more than welcome ...its unlimited so you could fill ya boots !!!! ;)
I can max out my connection at 800KB/s most evenings so it doesnt take long to get most stuff
I'm using the NZB's from newsbin, those are the ones giving me CRC errors. The only one that I got to work (24 Season 6 Episode 13) had spanish subtitles. Fetched Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 ok today though.

Have you tried using the PAR files to rebuild the RAR files ?
Daz: http://www.eztvefnet.org/index.php
Give that a try.
A fair few clients have been suggested already, but you might want to give newsbin pro a wirl. You have to pay for it, although a cracked version is very easily found.

You need to subscribe to a premium newsgroup provider, I use
http://newshosting.com/index.php?PageName=services.php
because they are cheap and good, the unlimited d/l package maxes out my 10Mb cable connection!
You then need a program which you can use to fetch files from the newsgroup server and recombine them, I use
http://www.shemes.com/index.php
because it is cheap and good
and you might want to use a facility for collecting together all the parts of the files you want using .nzb.
I use

guess why? ;)
Takes a while to get everything sorted but once it is you'll wonder how you lived without it!

Cheers Matt, I'll take a look at that soon :)
Right, well after changing to the provider MB recommended, I have to say I'm starting to be turned. It's not so much the extra bandwidth I can fill (it's only a 2MB pipe after all), just the convenience of being able to find pretty much whatever I want, and if I can find it, actually being able to get it, rather than worrying about dead trackers or crappy seeders etc
Looking good so far :)
Is it safe to lose all the firewall stuff that you have to have with BitTorrent and others in order to try and stop the litigious lot from writing stroppy letters to your ISP?
I've ditched it all for now as I understand it's safe. Apparently 'they' just tell the newsgroup providers to take the content down adn and long as that's done in a reasonable amount of time then it goes no further.
They are more interested in the posters in newsgroups anyway. The ones that do post are behind various proxies and firewalls so there is bugger all chance of them being caught.
I prefer it to torrents now. It was fine when everyone was limiting to say 50-60% of your upload as then it won't kill your connection. Now they throttle down to about .5k upload which is crap!
I'm interested in trying newsgroups but it'll have to wait till I have more money and more HD space free. ;D
The guides will be very helpful though so thanks for those. :)

Same on both counts. I'm setting up my old PC and connecting it to my TV as well as connecting it to my network, so that'll have almost 200GB free, would be nice to fill most of it with films etc then just play them on my TV directly :)
That's what your 360 is for dude :D Last night I downloaded Clarksons latest dvd, went downstairs and streamed it straight to the 360. It's how I watched Borat the other week :D
I'm planning on using it to stream once I'm back in Swansea. But I really need some more HD space to do it efficiently so that's why I'm waiting till then.
Hoping to retire my divx dvd player and pass it onto my parents and the living room to make things easier.
There's a slight bug in TVersity at the momemnt where the last 30 seconds or so of a video will stutter, sometimes quite badly. There's a fix in the forum somewhere but it's fixed in the new release which is imminent - which incidentally, adds PS3 support.

I tried doing that with a film I'd obtained, and the quality was pretty crap tbh. Not quite sure why, it's fine on my PC but really poor quality on the 360.
It was the same when I first installed it dude, just need to tweak the encoding settings off the default. Mine's optimised (I think at least) for the TV content I download (24 and Prison break mostly at the moment), so 640x352 resolution (the same resolution all the source files seem to be in), optimise for quality and tell the server it's a wired connection. After that, it looks no different to me hooking up the lappy and playing off that :)
If we'd have thought you could have seen it the other week.

Worked a treat, thanks Daz :) Also found that going into Console Settings->Screen Settings and changing to 480p instead of 1080i makes the image that little bit sharper. Probably dosn't make a huge amount of difference, but if you're planning on watching several different programs it wouldn't hurt :)

Ah sweet, forgot your were on that :)
1080i?
Some people dream of that :p
I found 720p nicer than 1080i, but then I have a smaller screen so it doesn't make much difference to me.
I heard this morning people who queued overnight for a PS3 in London got a HDTV worth £2k for free. Bastards :D
At the London launch everyone who bought a PS3 also received a free 46-inch HD television and a taxi home.
Bastards!
Sony said the taxi was so that no one got mugged on the way home ;D Fair enough really.
I tell ya, if I'd have known that was gonna happen, I'd have gone down. Then probably sold the PS3 :D

LOL
You shouldn't run 1080i if your screen is a 720p screen, people think that it will make things better its a common misconception that more is better but actually you're much better off pixel matching or as close as you can get ;)

My TV is 1080i capable, and visual tests confirm the image is sharper and better at 1080i :)
Edit: I don't see what was funny though :/
I thought 720p was supposed to be better as it was progressive, and is more suitable for fast moving stuff.
If it looks better though then stick with it I guess.

23-03-2007, 11:54
Well I'll give it a whirl at the weekend for a thorough check, but I've not noticed any problems at 1080i so far.
I was a little wrong Davey - the resolution setting in TVersity should be set to whatever resolution the screen is at. That setting is used to set a cap is all, ie, anything over that will be shrunk to the lower resolution, but anything smaller (like my TV shows) will be left untouched.
I tell ya, if I'd have known that was gonna happen, I'd have gone down. Then probably sold the PS3 :D
I'd have gone down and sold both. Wouldn't be the first time I've overnighted on the streets of London either. :D

Newsgroups ARE the way forward, once you've worked it all out its easy :)
Daz Easynews is good, but the http newsgroups are much much better and have higher retention (because of less overheads) than their nttp varients...
I was with newshosting who are awesome (cheaper than giga which are generally totally over the top for what anyone needs), but i've switched to easynews (thanks desmo :) ) because i've been behind my dammed uni firewall i've needed a decent http newsgroup the only one of which is easynews.
But a newsgroup is crap without the wonderfull Newzbin :D
MB has covered it all so i'm just agreeing but i feel i have to because it is all so so worth it!

How are they speedwise compared to torrents? My line at home is roughly 5MB (differs up and down depending on time on day, but that's about right), and my torrents come down pretty slowly, averaging around 30-40kb/s (though it'll double overnight). What kind of speeds would I expect to get on a newsgroup download? :)

Right, I've subscribed to all that as recommended, and using Newzbin found what I wanted (CSI Series 6 DVD 1), and imported the .nzb file into Grabit. It's started downloading but according to Grabit it's currently downloading at 0.00 KB/s (which is strange as I can see stuff downloading).
Am I doing something wrong, or does it take a little while to build up speed?
Matblack
26-03-2007, 21:30
That sounds odd, what are you getting in the target folder? Is it rars and pars or notepad files? And how old is this nzb? If its very old then the post may have moved off the server, remember that newsgroup files have a limited lifespan and eventually fall of the server, alternatively the update on the download speed maybe set for a very long period?
As far as speed is concerned it tends to fall off at the end rather than build up at the start as you have less threads.

Davey_Pitch
26-03-2007, 22:07
I have one Par file in the target folder, but near 78MB of text files in the cache folder. I'll have a wander around the Grabit site and see if there's anything I should be doing, like opening up ports on my router or something like that.
Edit: I see spikes in the download speed from time to time, to around 280KB/s, which is the kind of speed I obviously want it to sustain at.

Bingo
There is a bug in GrabIt which makes the server group list mandatory. Without this list some downloads from NZB files will not be decoded and result in a lot of text files. The solution is simple:
- Locate the server you are downloading from in the list on the left;
- Right-click on the name;
- In the pop-up menu hit the 'Refresh grouplist'.
This will download a list of available groups for that server and should fix the problem. The text files which are already downloaded can be decoded using any yEnc decoder.

Thanks for the offer Mark but I've already paid for Grabit for a month (I'm trialling the groups to see how I go), and it's picked up speed now and averaging around 400-500KB/s which is fine with me, soooo much faster than torrents. :)
Edit: Forgot my Newshosting account allows me 8 concurrent connections, so enabled the extra 5 in Grabit and the speed has jumped up to around 700KB/s. At this rate I'll have the remaining 12GB of my downloads done before I go to work according to Grabit. If that's the case, I'm sold :D

From their website...
Unlimited use of the GrabIt Usenet Search
Also increases your search results from 750 to 7,500 results per search.
Unlimited use of the GrabIt Usenet Browser
Also increases your binary browses to 150,000 results and offers a 30 day history.
It's only £1 so figured I'd buy it and see if it's worth it. I can always stop if I need to.
I'm definitely sold anyway. 15GB downloaded in the time it would usually take me to download 1GB. I now desperately need a bigger hard drive :D

Sitting down and logging into a machine is an interactive logon. Using those for any services (defined as anything you want to run without user interaction, at least to me) is bad practice.
This is all availability stuff though that I preach regularly to underlings so it's well drilled into me. It's all habit now :)
Matblack
27-03-2007, 11:22
I sort of understand, but surely you require user interaction to look at Newzbin and then press a button to tell the machine you want to d/l a nzb? Otherwise you need some sort of neural interface :D
Once I select an nzb I confirm the download and the system boots grabit and starts downloading the file, so esentially I don't have any interaction with Grabit, it even self loads, or it it that fat that it boots an interface the issue?
MB
It's still running in an interactive session - If that session terminates, then the application goes with it. You'd be amazed at how many applications I see running on logged in consoles that serve large percentages of a businesses users or clients. All it takes is a powercut out of hours and it's gone. You can spend money on UPS's and what not to bring the machines down in a controlled manner and back up again when power is restored, but what's the point if the application on that server requires interaction to be running again.
When it comes to sys admin stuff I have a compulsion to do things right, and while it makes me very good at my job, it tends to make me anal with my own IT setup :p:D

Heard this discussed on the radio yesterday.
Its seems very unlikely the downloaders will ever be prosecuted because of the wording of copyright law, it basically says that the only way to bring a criminal conviction is a) prosecute people who upload or b) proove a downloaders actions would have a significant detriment to the financial gains of a copyrighters income. If you are only downloading once then your individual impact is said to be negligable.
No proceedings have been sucessfully brought against anyone in the UK for downloading for personal use at this time.
I think we're pretty safe for the time being ;)

It's remarkably easy once you get out of the mindset of needing to have everything simply because it's available. I got bored of filesharing and stuff a good 3-4 years ago and I don't miss it. In fact I go to a small LAN 2-3 times a year and I never get around to watching the small amount of stuff I pick up there so god knows where any of you find the time to actually watch the sheer volume of stuff you can get hold of with a maxed out 8mb connection these days.
Me either. I generally use mine for grabbing an app when I need it or if a new film/album comes out that I fancy watching/listening to. Will be grabbing the odd Wii game once the console is chipped too. But I'm not constantly downloading just for the sake of it.

For me its movies and music and I have got into the mentality of deleting films once I have watched them, lets face it if they are available now they will be available later :D
I have just a very few that I keep but its serious only about 5, I am starting to d/l music in FLAC where available as it makes a difference on my Hifi but a lot of the old stuff is in MP3 so doesn't take up much room :)

I'm currently getting old of TV Series for myself and Lynne that we've wanted to watch from the start (like Charmed which she loves), or stuff like CSI Series 6 for me. It's actually stuff we intend on buying at some point, but with saving for the house money is tight, so this fills a need until we have enough spare cash to actually go out and buy what we want.

That sounds pretty much like what I do with torrents. :)
I've actually bought some films and albums that I wouldn't have bought if I hadn't tried them first by downloading them.
I'm currently getting the entire 24 back story (started watching from day 6), I'll watch them once then delete them, TV shows are something I rarely go back to.
If I wanted to go back after first watch then I'd just buy the box sets :)

Newhosting is generally very good overall gets better all the time, easynews is good if your competent at searching and don't want to use a newsreader (but if youve never used newsgroups you'll just be totally confused so ignore this).
If you want the best that is (arguably i suppose) giganews, but they're not worth the extra although i agree they are the best.
v3.Newzbin.com is a good (well the best by far) indexing site
And for me newsleecher is the best new client (again in my opinion) that seems to get better with each beta release too. Technically you need to pay for it, but you'll find cracked versions everywhere i suppose...
tada!

Joining Newzbin without a provider isn't going to help, you need both Newzbin and a provider, I don't know any providers who take switch but some research may prove me wrong.

Newsdemon take switch i've been with them before, and they used to be ok, but worse than newshosting. Seems there retention has more than doubled since i was last with them! They are quick to respond and i think they just resell newshoting accounts anyways if memory serves me...
And yes listen to MB you need newsbin as well as an indexing service for your newsprovider (which would be newsdemon in my posts case)
Then get a newsreader to tie it all together, my advice would be newsleecher :)
I wish newsbin still allowed Paypal or Moneybookers :(

Manual Bank Transfer Topups If you would like to buy more than 8 weeks, and do not have a debit card, we are trialling the option for you to directly transfer money into our bank account.
Please read all of this before going ahead with your transfer. It is important.
Bear the following in mind when making a transfer to us:
Because the transfers have to be manually processed, they take up our time. Because of this, it is more expensive than credit card topups - you will only be credited at the rate of £0.40 sterling per week, NOT £0.25 sterling. Thus, a £10.00 sterling transfer will get you 25 weeks of credit (though see the next point about charges).
The amount we will credit you for is the amount we see arrive in our account, AFTER charges. Both your bank and our bank may make charges for you to do an international transfer (we're in the UK) and don't forget exchange rate fluctuations.
Include your Newzbin username as the reference when making the payment. If you don't, you won't get any credit, because we won't know who made the payment.
The minimum transfer we'd like you to make (obviously we can't technically enforce this, but if you transfer too little, it'll all disappear up the banks' asses) is £10.00 sterling. Feel free to make up to £40.00 sterling for 2 years credit or so.
Our bank details: (let us know if your bank requires more than this)
Bank: HSBC
Sort Code: 40-31-05
Acct Number: 71710974
IBAN: GB25MIDL40310571710974
Branch Identifier Code: MIDLGB2110K
Allow 14 days from your transfer to credit being applied. After transferring, please open a support ticket (http://v3.newzbin.com/support/create/) of type 'Sales:Pay Via Manual Bank Transfer' and request it is assigned to Caesium. This will ensure your payment is credited as quickly as possible.

Newsdemon do paypal :) Newzbin wanted to use paypal, but paypal kept locking their account (they must be making an obscene amount of money...!) even after explanations, paypal would unfreeze the account only for it to be automatically frozen 2 weeks later! NewzBin got pretty ****** off with that and dropped it, as MB said they recently started trying bank transfers. But personally switch/visa/mastercard is fine for me, i top up newzbin account when i want/need (sometimes it runs out and i don't need to use it for a few weeks pennies saved :D), and £5 a month for my newsgroup access suits me sir!

They've got better since i last used them, put it this way they're more than good enough to get started on, give this newsgroup stuff a go, if you don't like them changing newprovider is easy :)
I've finally got round to giving this a go, partly because I was having so much trouble with torrents for Dexter.
Seems good so far, bit awkward to get the hang of initially but otherwise, nice and speedy :D

Speed is one of the main benefits of usenet. Lost count of the number of friends who've boasted about some "uber" fast download they had on a torrent, only for me to tell them I routinely get 17mbps off giganews and can download a gigabyte every 8 minutes :D
I assure you, you will never go back after getting the hang of them :)!
Looking at how much it's downloaded in an hour, I think you're right :D
Plus it was very easy to find stuff once I knew how, first file was tricky but after that it was pretty simple.

Thought I'd get around to this as I've been meaning to for a while.
I have a Newzbin account I got a while ago but never got around to using.
I've installed Grabit, now all I need (I think) is a news server.
I've been looking at Newsdemon (https://www.newsdemon.com/join.php?pricepointid=18) (since they accept Maestro and/or Paypal) and was thinking about the 30Gb/month option without SSL (third from the bottom) using the in-month renewal option if required. I doubt I'll use more than that in a typical month and this seems like a reasonable figure.
Two of their selling points seem to be 20 connections and 110 day retention - are these good or are they fairly standard? Does this look like a reasonable deal to you Usenet gurus?
I'm in no hurry to sign up as I don't get home for 3 weeks so won't be able to use it until then anyway.
Any advice?
Have I chosen a reasonable combination of services?
Am I missing anything?

I am currently with Giganews which is a tad extreme really and I could do with changing. I'll look at newshosting as thats about £5/month cheaper.
Just a thought though, since this is paid content surely the RIAA etc are going to be paying attention to them soon? Reason I mention this is that newsgroups are rapidly increasing in popularity. The main thing then comes down to them raiding companies and demanding subscription information? Maybe i'm being cautious but has anyone else considered this?
Matblack
31-08-2007, 15:23
I have considered it but its a risk you take but and its a big but.
As far as I am aware no one in the UK has ever been convicted for downloading things. The real issue comes when you upload or share P2P. The way the law is structured you can only be convicted if a publishing company or the RIAA can prove that you activities have a substantial effect on the profiability of an organisation. When we download we only remove one potential purchase from the thousands of potential purchases of an album/ film/ game. However when we share or upload we are potentially allowing 10,000s/ 10,000s of people not to buy the copywritten material, thats where the RIAA can get involved. This is much the same as when you buy a pirate DVD, although its frowned upon you aren't going to get a major fine or prison time, however get caught in possession of a duplication factory and you'll have the book thrown at you.
The upshot is that only really uploaders are at risk and as newsgroups and 10,000s of legitimate users it is practically impossible to tell who is downloading what. You don't want to be sending nasty letters to people who have done nothing wrong as they tend to sue you :)
MB
I bought Newsrover years ago, it's not bad but the interface is a little fiddly. It does work well once you get the hang of it though.

I had forgotten about the upload requirement as its been a while since I last thought about it. That is true, they are mostly focusing on BT and kazaa at the moment. I suppose they could potentially go after the posters on newsgroups. They all use anon secure proxies though so there is little chance of getting them.

Definately at least try it out :) You won't be put off withnewsdeamon either.
Zirax Newshosting is just as good as giganews in every way but slighty less retention, and how you would ever really need over 100 days is beyond me... I live off about 30 max, and thats MORE than enough, ok sometimes you have to wait for things to role around again but for any new content its easy to grab things...

Thing is MB if Virgin were trialing some kind of usenet blocking filter i would be one of the only people NOT affected as my whole operation is based on port 80 and the http protocol. It's impossible to distinguish (as i found out in uni :D). So i think its just conincidence. Maybe one of the major servers had a loss possiblt? Although easynews where very quick to get back to me, and have been in corespondence telling me everything ( even down to my area) is A-OK. Plus the fact it worked when i went through an annon. proxy (very strange).
Couldn't tell you what it was but it works again anyway...
It's impossible to distinguish
I wouldn't go that far. Over plain http it would be perfectly possible to identify and filter what you're doing, but in reality I imagine it would cost too much (in terms of sheer computing power). Https wouldn't be as simple, but still possible to work out what you're doing to a reasonable degree of certainty.
Filtering by port and protocol is comparatively cheap resource wise, and is much more cost effective, but as computing 'bang for buck' continues to soar (Moores law) it wouldn't surprise me to see ISP's become much more aggressive in analyzing traffic, assuming the market is still relying on it for SLA's/FUP's compliance anyway.

Sorry Daz it's over SSL (443) usually, I swap and switch (very easy with easynews). How could they differentiate my download over a normal internet download? How could they possible tell (apart from say file name, which really wouldn't work!)

I'll give you my account details if you want to play around to check (:) ).
I'll PM you details if you get in touch, i'll just change password and pause my downloads for the minute...
I'm not saying they are looking, but if they wanted to they could. It all comes down to human logic. With https they wont be able to open the packet and see everything inside, and even if they could, foo.zip isn't going to tell anyone anything. What they can tell regardless of what's in the packet is where it's coming from and where it's going. If you're download gigs and gigs of data from easynews's server, it's not unreasonable to consider that p2p/usenet traffic and shape it as such, for example. It's all down to the ISP, they can pretty much do whatever they want.
Yup - there are companies that specialise in packet sniffing hardware (Ellacoya for one). That's a bit a of a swearword around us PN customers (though a lot less so since BT took over and two extra centrals arrived).

Are newzbin any good?
Newzbin is great, especially if you combine it with SABNZBD, but you will also need an account with a newsgroup provider such as Giganews or easynews. Giganews are offering 10Gb/3day free trial accounts at the moment & I would say are one of the best news providers around at the moment.
Newzbin is just a website that basically list most of the stuff that is available for download and gives you an easy way to see what you can get.

I would say nzbmatrix>newzbin at the moment. At nzbmatrix you only pay once for lifetime membership, newzbin is subscription based. Ok so it is very cheap anyway, but why pay the extra?

I want to have a newsreader on my Ubuntu laptop and looking around, Pan looked like it may be more user friendly than others. It apparently handles NZB, yEnc and multiserver files which should simplify matters somewhat. Anyone have any experience with Linux newsreaders?
I'm using this (http://www.boat-drinks.co.uk/showthread.php?t=5735) Stan. Handles my torrents as well as NZB, is web based and doesn't need you to be logged on for it to work, just for the PC to be on :)

It's a better service, a monthly cost can go to server upkeep and (it doesn't but) staff for editors. Newzbin and all the other index sites are still WAY behind whats actually on the newsgroups, one reason i stay with Easynews, if its not on Newzbin, its still likely its lying around hidden and not found by an editor on usenet... So the more it costs, i'd be inclined to think the better coverage you get? Never actually tested it though... Haven't paid for weeks with newzbin in ages anyway the free search is good enough for me :D

I assume I have to install it on my webspace on the webhost's server?
Can you supply a little detail as to how it works please - I want to make sure it's not going to be beyond my limited skills before I try it :o
You'd probably get told off if you ran it on your web hosts box, though I guess it depends on the host :p
I have a web server on my Linux box (apache), and I put the b4rt files into a directory under it's root (called b4rt). I point my browser at http://127.0.0.1/b4rt , run through the setup wizard thing (where it'll ask to setup a database, I've used MySQL but you might be able to use sqllite and forget most of that step), and that's it. I can access that from anywhere and monitor/queue downloads :)
Sorry for the slight bumpage, but I'm stuck with regards to newsgroups. I've downloaded grabit and subscribed to newshosting.com but I can't seem to find anything. Do I also have to subscribe to something like giganews or the like?
Use something like http://www.newzbin.com/ to search for the things you want to download :)
Doesn't cost much to subscribe to, about £2 I think.

Grabit has a basic search function as far as I remember, if you know what you're looking for then that should suffice. If you want to browse, you'd be better off with Newzbin or the like.
I use Newsrover to grab files, it also has a basic search function and so far, I've felt no need to subscribe to the likes of Newzbin (I did have an account at first but found I wasn't using it so stopped paying).
Newsrover came free when I signed up with Newsdemon and does pretty much everything you need. It will search for and grab files and can automatically unrar/join/repair files if you want it to.
I tend to use Izarc (it's free) for unraring and Quickpar for repairs. If it's just a case of joining parts of files, there is a utility called Join but you have to pay for it (it's not expensive) but I trust simple stuff like that to Newsrover - although I untick the default "delete files after joining" option in case it goes tits up and I need to do it manually. You can join part files with a batch file but I haven't fiddled with that yet, I'll maybe have a go when I get home.
It may seem daft to do all this manually when Newsrover can do it all for you but I feel I have more control over what's happening by doing it myself.
A couple of times now I've tried to use Newsrover to rebuild files with missing parts and it has failed but I've succeeded using Quickpar.
Use something like http://www.newzbin.com/ to search for the things you want to download :)
Doesn't cost much to subscribe to, about £2 I think.
Tried that already, they aren't accepting new members :(

Ahh sorry, didn't realise that :(
Stupid hat on. I've downloaded the files for some tv shows, but what do I do with them now? I've somehow managed to get Heroes sorted but don't know how I did it.
EDIT: Being stupid, figured it out. Forgot you only select 1 file to extract and winrar does the rest
Thought I'd chuck this in here :)
Have been using NewsLeecher for some of my newsgroup stuff and it does a good job but I've recently found AltBinz. It does pretty much everything I want now. I can save an NZB into a watched folder and it automatically downloads it all. But AltBinz will also now unrar the files for you so you end up with a fully finished and unrared file :)
Just set it and leave it....sorted!!!

That's what I love about Newsrover - search, click and leave it to get on with it :D

Newsleecher does that too Desmo, or at least mine does. In the Repair'and'Extract section, they get placed there automatically linked with the nzb's, then checked if there all there if not, it unpauses the par2 files downloads them fixes the file, and once everythings good to go it unrars and deletes and removes all the files uneeded (and par2 files in the download queue that werent needed). Everything goes to the recycle bin just to make sure you can undo things! Sometimes it forgets to delete the wasted par2 files from the download queue but thats it :)

Wow just checked it out, it does look frggin good though, once my list is downloaded with newsleecher i may have a look at altbinz. I only use the news program to grab things that are over 40 days off easynews as the global website search can only reach at a max 40 (but i still love it :))

Oh, maybe I missed that then. Will take another look as I do prefer the overall look and fell of NewsLeecher. It's just that I was doing a search for auto unrar'ing and AltBinz popped up.
Just noticed that the unrar feature is in the latest beta but I'm using 3.8 Final. Will take a look at it :)

Yeah sorry that might be it, i'm using 3.9 something or other rather than 3.8, still haven't tried it yet, AltBinz looks the shiz :p
Upgraded to the 3.9beta and it's all there :)
Giving it a test now.

It's official, dump newsleecher i'm totally loving Alt.Binz, only slight problem is all the built in searchs dont cover newzbin for some reason!
Hehehe, I got NewsLeecher doing what I want and so I'm going back to that. I think it just looks a bit slicker.
Got it set now so that I can just pop an NZB into a folder and it downloads, unrars into a "Completed" folder and then deletes all uneeded files. Excellent :D

Haha, we've swapped, ive been using par and extract for ages but i think the altbinz works better and has more options, plus its actually rightfully free and easy to update unlike newsleecher. Each to their own though.
Why do i talk about rightfully free and newsgroups what really is the point :D?
I've still got AltBinz installed....but the GUI on NewsLeecher just looks so much neater :o

Seems the same to me really after a bit off fiddling, changed it from the horrid blue to silver too, and moved the server connections list up a bit etc... I'm more than happy, i never really use news readers anyways apart from things over 40 days old from easynews. You know about the new EU beta news server right? I've pulled stuff off there with retention of 84 (right on the brink lucky i had pars) days so far!
Yep, saw it the other day. Retention is so much better :D
