View Full Version : The metro has an MOT!
I have a rather decrepid metro - my Nan bought it new so there's a bit of a moral obligation to keep it going as long as possible, that and it's a hell of a lot cheaper to run and insure than my saabs!
I FINALLY got it to pass an mot during the week. One or two advisories though -
Rear suspension pipes heavily corroded (only reason it didn't fail is because it's not a failable item apparently)
Rust
Brakes out of balance
Rust
Steering coupling splitting
Rust
Oil Leak
Rust
High HC
Rust
It's a metro (is that allowed as an advisory??!?!?!)
Fortunately my tester has a sense of humour ;D
Just waiting for a price on suspension pipes before I try and use the thing.
As you can see, we take good care of it, and park it under trees to try and hide it from the neighbours

Awww that reminds me of when my mum used to drive a little red 3 door Metro. It had a manual choke and everything. It is aparently still puttering around in the Highlands to this day.
I learnt to drive in my mum's Metro City. I loved the thing, and it never went wrong. It even had a turbo for the slight inclines (moving from 4th to 3rd :D). Ah, the memories of only having four gears.

My first car was an MG metro (non turbo) in white with red seatbelts . I thought I was the mutts nuts :D

Aaah manual chokes. /reminisces.
How do you get in in the back garden like that? It looks really impossible!
I saw this thread and thought it was going to be a post about Daz going for a medical !!!!! ;)
Ah well, at least it still works.
Before the guy at work crashed his into an audi it failed it's MOT due to the brakes not working. Fairly sure he fixed them before the crash ?
My cousins first car kept going (think he also crashed this one before buying and crashing a MX5) due to a watering can in the boot that had to be used every 50 miles to top up the leaking water. Don't think his oil was too stable either :D

Creative driving ;)
There's a small gap in the hedge and it's just shoved through it to get to both sides of the garage :D
It took me months to fix the brakes on the thing. Eventually tracked it down to a dodgy bleed nippled that sucked a bit of air in just as it was being tightened :dunno:
I've got 2 cars with manual choke. The metro ones serves a dual purpose. If you tug it out a bit when you're flat out, you can get another 2 or 3 mph out of it. I've had 93 out of this one ;D
I got 96 out of mine on new years day 2000 going downhill on a dual carriageway. I overtook someone who was doing about 95. Man that was an excruciating five minutes. ;D
My first car ws an MG Metro too. MtE had the white one with red seatbelts when I met him (with some nobber exhaust on it that you could hear from the next town) then he had stupid hothatches, came stupidly close to losing his licence so I made him get another MG, then I passed my test and he gave me the keys \o/ If you went over 80 the gearstick used to go beserk! And a stereo in it that could restart a heart. :D

I had one off them too.. Was it like a metalic blue.. ? I got it nicked. I was just an old A type engine lifted straight out of an Austin Allegro iirc :D
Huddy you plank, read your own post! It was white! :D

Ahh selective reading syndrome.. :( This is a side effect of selective hearing syndrome. :p
Cor, all you posh lot with their MG ones, mine is but a lowly L :(
I did have an MG metro engine in my first Allegro though (yup, I had two!). Was too much for the poor gearbox though, when doing a wheelspin I knocked 12 teeth off the diff ;D Was pretty quick for an aggro tho up to that point :D
Methinks someone wants to retire - just been quoted over £300 to change two suspension pipes ;D ;D :'(
I saw this thread and thought it was going to be a post about Daz going for a medical !!!!! ;)
Ha ha! Me too!
Mine's not due till the summer :D
Ha ha! Me too!
Great minds......... ;)
Soz Daz but it was just too tempting !!!! :D
Was ready to attack the thing with a sledgehammer today
Did the suspension pipes last weekend, and have been going through the list of advisories. Managed to blag a new fuel filler pipe off ebay during the week - the one on there had the structural integrity of a rice pudding skin. Went to fit it today and the old one fell to bits while undoing it. Guess the new one HAS to fit then. Shame the vent pipe on it is shorter than the original and a larger diameter. And the stub of pipe it attaches to on the tank is so close to teh body of the car you can't get the hose back on.
3 hours later and it's on and bodged - book time is 1/2 hour. Used a saab hose to join it up - the metro is slowly being assimalted ;D
And a month later, I'm going to use the dcar "in anger" for the first time today. Me slow ;D
Might have to earn lots of money and use the garage that pumped up the suspension again - the lady at the desk is HAWT
Shame she knows my car's a battered old metro :embarassed:
Wehey, nice one. Mine passed on Tuesday so I'm out terrorising the streets of Kent in my Pop.
Well it's running like a bag of ****. Situation normal then :D Think it needs a service. I think the air filter might be a good 10 years old now...
Aha, think I've got a clue why it's running like poo. The air filter box was full of nutshells. As was the whole engine bay ;D Shopping for a slightly less clogged filter time methinks...
My best friend's wedding yesterday - she arrived in a classic 1973 Rolls Royce in old english white.
How did the groom and best man arrive? By clapped out mettallic beige and rust Metro ;D ;D
Fortunately for them, we were early enough for there to be no cameras to save the moment for posterity.
I had to hoover the insides of the car out beforehand cos it hadn't been used for a couple of weeks, so spiders and moved in :embarassed:

At least it's gone up from the £25 I saw earlier!
Is that power 63 horsepower?!
You've got a way to go yet to beat my score :D 1991 polo with a cracked piston, sticky rear brake, no stereo ..... ragged every time it was started (I let it warm up first).... £300 :D
Oh, and dent in the bonnet, dodgy passenger seat that wouldn't tip forward, and it had just started losing oil. I had soooo much fun in it though
Feel the 63 donkeys ;D
Got someone popping over tomorrow who's offered £175. Problem is I took it for a spin and stuck a couple of squid of petrol in and it's got a leak from near the tank somewhere. Fine time for that to appear :o
Well, it's gone :'(
Couldn't fix the leak completely - the flexi hose between the tank and the filler pipe won't seal for some reason. Showed it to him. He said not a big problem as he has a couple of spares cars. Phew :D
I sold it to make way for a replacement. Got a 1997 Corsa 1.2i waiting for me. 30k miles, and great nick. Most importantly, no rust ;: Has got a scrape down the passenger side (one careful woman owner my butt ;D), and it's red so fades to pink easily.
I have lots of random scrapes, but most of them are my fault.
Wooden posts are a favourite, along with garage doors, random metal things in tescos car park, toyota mr2 (that one really not fun), or just anything in a multi-story car park, you name it, I've hit it.
Anyways, enjoy the new one :)
This was a concrete post apparently. Could have been a lot worse I guess.
I know it's a good runner. Been servicing it for the last 3 years. Drove it back from Thorpe park a couple of months back, it's nice :) For a Corsa...

Remind me not to park anywhere near you should we ever find ourselves at a meet together.
