Not to figure out how I change my email address without ****ing up my gamerscore or save games so I can use the MSN if I want to :/

Looks cool though :) There's probably more features, just have to wait and see.

Ahh I saw that earlier today.
I've got the same problem as my MSN is @hotmail.com and my Live tag is @hotmail.co.uk
I might just leave it though, the PC is always next to the X-box anyhow.

Like the look of the 'low power mode' for downloading though. :)

I read somewhere that they'll introduce video messaging on top of the existing video conferencing. Which I plan to abuse :D

That could be cool :D I've not got a cam but I'd like to get one at some point, they're getting quite cheap now.

# Folder view for video content on connected devices

# H.264 video support: Up to 15 Mbps, Baseline, Main, and High (up to level 4.1) Profiles with 2 channel AAC LC and Main Profiles.
You have no idea how much it needs that first one - over a hundred video's in one list sucks the big one!

Daz

Right, think it's all sorted. Live account musical chairs seems to have left me with the same MSN contact list, xbox friends list, achievements and saves - though on the correct email account (daz@). And it all seems to work on xbox.com.

I'd have been shafted if I'd been using a hotmail/live account as apparently you cant change them :/

That's the plan for me as well, hang fire until I know if my console will survive it. It's gone through Dead Rising, the GH Update, and a couple of others which have bricked consoles, so I reckon one thing will kill it eventually. Hopefully not this update, I don't want my baby dying before I get Forza 2.

Nope, hopefully sometime this week, it only went last Monday, a quick call on Sunday told me it was ready to be sent back which means shipping today for a drop sometime this week, however I'll have to have it redirected from home to work so I estimate Friday at the earliest :/

What's all this bricking talk? Can an update brick a console or have you guys got yours chipped or firmware flashed?

leowyatt
09-05-2007, 11:25
Well mine is as vanilla as it was the day I got it. I have heard of updates killing consoles, I'm sure MB will attest to this. His died when it updated playing GRAW2. Just found this (http://digg.com/gaming_news/Lawsuit_Xbox_360_update_bricking_consoles) digg article.

Daz
09-05-2007, 11:26
An update shouldn't brick consoles, but there was one particular update that saw the web flooded with people who applied the update then lost their consoles to the red ring of death. My guess is they altered some status code handling (either added or removed some) and the new firmware was 'panicing' for some reason when it read one. Almost like an unhandled exception in a regular app.

Though I'm no expert, so what the **** do I know :D

Iirc, that was last springs update, and the 'fall' one wasn't as bad, so hopefully this one will be the same.

[edit]Heh, Major Nelson's blog has been killed :D

Apparently, until they release the keyboard adapter, the black box will only appear if you have a USB keyboard plugged in. If not, then your guide button should flash when an IM is received, and you have to bring out the guide itself to view/reply.

Windows key + M to bring up the overlay from a keyboard.

Daz

I started with a core Des, and it's fine. The only thing that's a necessity is a hard drive, with that you'll be able to play games, download content, and save your progress. You can add in the wireless gumph (it is worth it, but you dont need it to actually play a game) and hi-def/vga cables when you're ready.

Trouble is, you need to find a cheap hard drive on ebay to make it worth it. though I imagine ebay US is full of 20GB ones as they have the 120 now.

leowyatt
09-05-2007, 12:50
Just echoing Daz's you'd be fine with a core for the time being. All the other stuff you can add as you go along :)

There are a few hard drives on ebay and the seem to sell for over £40 which isn't too bad. There are a few BIN ones which look ok.

Desmo
09-05-2007, 12:52
But do I actually need the HD to do stuff? Does it just limit the online content or can I not save ANY game I've been playing?

leowyatt
09-05-2007, 12:54
you can't save anything unless you get a memory card :(

They range from 64mb to 512mb which are around £30-35 on ebay. You might be worth trying gamestation or somewhere to se if they have any hds.

Daz
09-05-2007, 13:04
Trouble is, you're then looking at 60/70 quid for the hard drive, and then it's more effective to just get the premuim.

You can get the smallest, 64MB imported from Japan on ebay for about a tenner, but you're only going to be able to save games, realistically you wont be able to download much - including game patches, without which you get kicked off live.

leowyatt
09-05-2007, 13:24
Well for a HD there is this (http://www.virtualvillage.co.uk/items/item.aspx?itemid=4228182&utm_source=baseuk&utm_medium=shopping) and if you use google checkout you get a tenner off so it comes to £34.99. When you go to the checkout it gives a twickenham address not the Shanghai one. Might be worth a look

The download from xbox.com is about 8MB iirc, so not big.

Liking it so far, some cute little touches, and some really useful ones. I like the marketplace blade and interface, I like the fact I'm now signed in before I hit the dash, I like the new 'joinable' icon on the friends list and I like the 'my friends are playing' thing on the arcade interface. There's a new 'reference' setting for VGA and that's really helped with some colour washing.

Only bad thing so far is that it's broken tversity's video support, so no convenient download access until they fix it (though they're working on it right now).

leowyatt
09-05-2007, 22:34

10-05-2007, 09:33
Q: The email address assigned to my Xbox LIVE account is different to the email address I use on my PC for Windows LIVE messenger. Is there a way for me to still access my messenger account?
A: Not at this time. We are working on the ability to allow users to change the email address they originally used when signing up for Xbox Live. The feature will be available in an upcoming release.
So hopefully.

It's actually going to be reasonably useful for me. Every night, when I normally put the laptop on, I sign into messenger. Then, when it switches user to Dee, I stay signed on in the background. People message me and think I'm ignoring them :D

Least this way I can see if someone wants me :)

Daz

Oh, and if anyone's using it, the patch which should fix TVersity's video support is here (http://tversity.blogspot.com/2007/05/patch-for-xbox360-spring-update-is-now.html).

Davey_Pitch

I don't bother using TVersity any more now I've got a PC hooked up to the TV. I find it easier to watch video though as I have the easy option to pause, fast forward, rewind etc, and I can select music easier just by browing the hard drive and picking what I want to listen to :)

I do like the new update though, now I can sign into messenger I'll actually be online a fair bit, though I still need to hook up a USB keyboard to use it properly. I'll seriously consider that keyboard add-on when it's released.

Support for that was added with this update - you can pause, rewind etc video's as they're being streamed or downloaded. Though obviously I've yet to test it :p

I'll give you that. As much as I love having access to everything with a remote, there's a lootttt of music to shift through. Still, it's a small price to pay to keep a PC out of the living room.

My main beef with the video was that I could never get the quality looking just right. Maybe I wasn't doing something right, but I followed all the guides, played with the codec settings, and it never seemed to be as sharp as when I watched it on the PC. It was also slightly dark in places, something I could easily adjust with color correction in media player.

Aye, I've got about 15GB of music, all neatly organised into artist, album folders, so much easier to decide what I want to listen to :)
