Hey guys - I got a space socket A CPU, Ram, passively cooled GFX (ATI 9600 jobbie) and ATX mobo. I want to install a media box downstairs in the living room, but cant find any socket A solutions on the usual pages... Can anyone help me??

Try and pick up a Biostar 200N second-hand, brilliant piece of kit in my experience, dual VGA out, AGP slot in the right place and and nforce2 chipset which has proven rock-solid. Good quiet cooling too!

Though actually if you've got a gfx card and motherboard you only need a case...you still got an account on Ocuk, only the wanted section is surprisingly good for picking up older kit on the cheap :)

What do you mean you can't find any Socket A solutions? Coolers or Shuttle-style systems? If it is just a case to house an ordinary ATX motherboard then you can probably still find something suitable. :)

We're using an Ideq 200N at home for our Media box. To be honest compared to Shuttles its a bit noisy. I'm going to investigate some possible quieter fan for mine. The only other critique I can raise is that it is a might be particular about what memory goes in it. No cheap stuff or you'll get some odd errors occuring.

Small case with socket A mini mobo. ATX mobo would be too big to fit in a nice tiny case surely?

Ah right, I see now. You might be able to find an old desktop style case that fits although it will still be fairly big due to the size of an ATX motherboard but most now use mATX motherboards.

You could always make your own, I've seen a few made out of wood that looked good. :)

uATX motherboard (http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=111916) then perhaps this uATX case (http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=212408) but some investigation would need to be done to check about the AGP riser card situation as it appears it might not hold up the 9600 without one. You might be able to find cheaper secondhand but they don't always come up often. :)

May possibly still have a Shuttle SN45 sitting around doing nothing.
Should even have the uprated 250w PSU in it as well.

Will take a shufti when I get home.

Intriguing! Well if you cant find it - dont bust a ball over looking for it continuously! We'll keep an eye on "The Bay".
May even look into making our current one the media centre - though its not as quiet due to the 7800GTX fan in it :/

You could always replace the graphics card fan if that is the noisiest component in the PC and that is all that is holding you back, Zalman and Arctic Cooling will both do suitable products. :)

Well theres that, the funds and my fear of playing with the intricate workings of an expensive gfx card!

may look into it in a month or two. Cheap decent quiet socket 939 sff anyone?

Are you offering or do you want suggestions to make a quiet SFF socket 939 suggestion? If you do I'm sure I can suggest a CPU cooler and a graphics card cooler. :)

Flat is getting gutted this weekend to reposition the Aircon to more sensible positions so I can keep my pc's, servers and myself cool. :D

It's surprising what I've found. An Epson A3 SCSI scanner that I forgot I had, complete set of 4 toners for my printer, my XP64 CD, my Vista Beta DVD and more strangely a second MX1000 mouse.... I only ever bought one....

Oh well.
