Ok so things have changed, again (as usual).
So looks like i'm after a screen size 13" or less, "ultraportable" laptop, coming in at around or under £800. Weighing under 2kg would be nice, but its not totally important, i'm a big enough lad to be able to carry over 2kg decent battery life too, if it can survive playing a dvd for 3-4 hours thats perfect (ie train rides) ;D
Would like it to be able to be docked into a station, but so far i've not found anything (except a dell latitude 420 out of my price range).
On my short list now, are:

In summary, the Sammy Q35 jumps out at me but i don't *really* know why, the VIAO has s-video out which would be nice for plugging into old tvs to watch movies, the phillips just seems in the same league but nothing striking i dont think, and the Packard Bell has all the trimmings including built in webcam and mic and fingerprint reader, and is the cheapest by far. Only thing im worried about is real world battery life and build quality etc with the packard because i can't seem to find ANY reviews of it...
Another thing i'm not "up" on is the different processors used, if i find it confusing god help the public! so whats the difference between the t2250 and t5200 and t5500, i assume the two latter are the same type but ones slightly faster, but i'm not sure what the packard bell's t2250 is, i guess its cheap poo, hence the nice price? :D
Wow, long post, hopefully some managed untill the end of that and would like to help me! :)
Cheers again guys
Avoid Phillips and Packard Bell at all costs tbh.
PS - That's nothing other than personal bias, but on good grounds.
All you need to know about processor numbers is bigger is (usually) better. :)

See thats what i thought about the Packard Bell, but the price is just so good especially for what i get (well apart from the processor which i guess is poop), but i guess its going to fall apart within the year, this laptop is meant to last me really, i won't be doing much with it that will require upgrading i dont think.
And the bigger better thing is that true? I would have thought with desktops, but with laptops there is all this ultra low voltage parp i haven't really looked into recently, so im confused...
Cheers Mark, you popped up in my last thread, i appriciate the input, and i took a lot longer to set my thread out this time so you could compare at a glace :)
So far seems the samsung is still winning, its funny that i found the samsung by complete accident too! Always the way!
I'm hoping comet's price crash tomorrow yeilds something i can't refuse with regard to laptops...
My sister has the previous version of that Samsung, build quality is a bit on the plastic side, too much i think. It is light and thin but doesn't feel too good in the hand. Out of those i'd pick the Sony, good screen and decent build quality.

After all thos options i gave, taking onboard that bad thoughts i and others seem to have with the phillips and packard bell, and although from what i've read Ray's bad experience with the sammy, and the fact that the vaio doesnt seem that cheap for what im getting... i found this beauty on ebay for buy it now, comming in at about £700. Convince me WHY i shouldn't buy it :D
XPS M1210 LAPTOP CORE 2 DUO INTEL 1.66 T5500 12.1" TFT

Its a dell version of the packard bell basically, its got EVERYTHING, and its a dell and its cheapish. What could go wrong?
Its a dell version of the packard bell basically,
 It's not even close.
My work colleague had the memory controller on his XPS laptop die a few months back, but then he also had an Alienware laptop die a month out of warranty, so could be a jinx. My Dell laptop is nearly four years old and only now showing it's age (save the keyboard which had to be replaced) - bloody good considering it's been dropped down a flight of stairs (in a bag, thank god).
In short, you're lucky I didn't bid for it myself (I'll probably wish I had).

BUY IT.
I have the M1710 (the older version with the T2600 CPU) and it's brilliant. Build quality is excellent, it has a great screen and the 2Gb of memory is a godsend - pity it's onboard graphics but the bucketload of system memory should mean that won't be a problem, if you're not doing any serious gaming on it, it'll be perfectly fine.

It buy it now Mark :p, and there are LOADS of them :) Have a look!
So nobody sees anything bad with that auction because i might buy now/today, i just don't want to be ripped off. Not a total fan of ebay, but when the price is right etc... :) I may phone him too.

20-04-2007, 08:51
excellent, i'm ****ing excited now :) One thing i;ve noticed with that auction is hes advertising the M1210 with "integrated graphics" when i thought they were discrete only Gefore go 7400, why would he sell himself short? Also why does he have 2gb of memory (ive read right havent I?) for such a cheap cheap price? £700 for that would cost over a grand on the dell site i reckon? This is the only reason im worried...
LeperousDust
20-04-2007, 08:55
Ooooh, next question so much choice with these ebay auctions! I can get 2gb or 2ghz, surely slacking on ram i can upgrade easy in the future makes sense for a faster porcessor yeah?
Stan_Lite
20-04-2007, 09:06
Personally, I'd stick with the extra RAM. That processor is faster than mine and I've yet to do anything with it that taxes it- but if you think you'd benefit from a faster processor, go for it :)
Also, the reason he can sell them cheaper is that they're returns or cancelled orders - tested by Dell according to the little box below the "product highlights" section.
I priced the system on the Dell website (better processor, the other one must be out of date already) and it comes to £1,128.12 new, so it being a return and an older CPU, it's probably priced about right.
Stan :)
Edit: The Geforce Go 7400 is an upgrade option. It comes with onboard graphics as standard which will use up to 256Mb of your system RAM.
LeperousDust
20-04-2007, 09:48
Thanks stan, i just noticed that myself. Right so i think i'm set still on the one i linked earlier. Only thing holding me back now (even though the sammy has the same processor) i'm not sure if I should jump up to the 1.8/2.0+ghz C2D with 4mb (!!!) of cache, trying to find some reviews and real world opinions about it now. My theory is, if the ram is short i can add some (right?) if the processor is short its a bum to change?
I'm not bothered about the go7400, as long as i have the s-video port which is looks like i do :)
I'm overwheled with specs atm :D i KNOW im getting this laptop just not sure about the exact from yet. You guys have been very helpful though thanks again!
Stan_Lite
20-04-2007, 10:14
You're right in saying that it's much easier to upgrade memory than CPU. On the M1710 it's simply a case of undoing 2 screws on the underneath and removing the cover - which is fairly standard on most laptops I've seen.
If you go for the 1Gb option initially, it'll be 2x512Mb sticks so you'll need a pair of 1Gb sticks to upgrade. I would think you wouldn't have too much trouble selling on the old ones.
Stan :)

Stan your a star! Next thing (yeah im thinking will this end too :embarassed:) i've found the dell outlet again totally forgot about it, i've never bought a dell let alone from the outlet? Is it a good idea? And whats the turnover like? Am i likely to see the laptop i want appear on there?
Stan_Lite
20-04-2007, 10:29
No problem mate, I'm doing bugger all else anyway.
I've never used the Dell outlet before and only glanced at it occasionally so I'm not sure what sort of turnover there is. I would think that, even if your laptop did turn up on there, it would be unlikely to be any cheaper than the eBay one - but other people may know better than me.
Stan :)
The smaller laptops are a bit more of a niche and I've only ever seen one or two. Certainly possible, but not particularly common at the moment as, with the cost of laptops quite low at the moment, Joe consumer is buying them as desktop replacements. And they want the screen real estate.
I'd suggest giving Euro PC a call. They dont put all their stock on the website, and when I called they had the exact spec I wanted (right down to memory speed), and you can buy interest free. Similar prices to the Outlet as well.
Yeah, Euro PC is the one reason I didn't 'buy it now'.
Work are being anal about hardware these days unfortunately, so it looks like to get the hardware I want, I'll have to buy it myself (same as I did last time). :/
LeperousDust
20-04-2007, 10:58
Ahhhh, euroPC didn't seem to have much on offer, i'll give them a ring now, funny though because i don't quite know what i want! Should be a laugh over the phone :D
Wish me luck everyone, i plan to buy today! :D That ebay auction being my fallback :)
LeperousDust
20-04-2007, 18:57
Right, i know everyone is probably sick and tired of me harping on about this now, but i just need to make sure i've got things right. Unfortunately the best EuroPC could do was the D420, which is good but lacking a DVD drive amongst other things, which would annoy me somewhat.
I've whittled it down to (all these have an extra £25 p&p unless i drive to sheffield, which im thinking of doing):
For £680
XPS M1210 LAPTOP CORE 2 DUO INTEL 1.66 T5500 12.1" TFT
2 GIG 160GB DVD±RW TRUELIFE WIFI BLUETOOTH CAMERA
Thats got the lesser processor and integrated graphics, but more ram, and is the cheapest. With this for an extra £10 i can get the 9cell battery too (is that worth it?)
for £720
Dell XPS M1210 ,2.00GHZ T7200, 1GB DDR, 120HD, VISTA, CAMERA
Dell 1 YR Warranty, Truelife, WIFI, 12.1, Ultra Small
So this has got half the amount of RAM but surely 1gig is acceptable (thats what i was looking at originally) a slightly smaller HD, but i've got an external for my big collection of parp. Most of all its got the 4mb cache processor i want, as opposed to the 2mb T5500. Again with integrated graphics, and only available in 6 cell. So for £40+ io halve my RAM, lose a bit of HD space, but get a juicy processor, does that sound good?
£800 Cherry on top
Dell XPS M1210 ,2.00GHZ T7200, 256mb Geforce Go 7400, 1GB DDR, 160HD, VISTA, CAMERA
Dell 1 YR Warranty, Truelife, WIFI, 12.1, Ultra Small
So, for the extra £120, i get discrete graphics, a 9cell battery, half the amount of ram, but a bigger hard drive and the processor i want. All for my original price of £800 (what i was going to pay for that clapped out VIAO !!)
Reckon this is worth it? I'm trying to justify why i should really spend the extra £120 even though i know i was going to in the first place, when for £120 less ive got a fairly decent laptop (understatement!). But im liking the idea of the 7400, yes its not great but it'll play silly old games that can keep me happy i suppose... Any idea if it would be possible to retrofit a 7400 to the other models? I know i'd be able to do it (if possible), took my friends laptop all apart for a wash after he fed it vodka lemo, wasn't as hard as i thought.
So, its nearing the end of the day and i still haven't bought anything, i'm terrible at this! Somebody tell me what to do :p
Actually i may post this on the other place see if i can get any reviews of the actual laptop too :)
//Edit: Right gotta go out, hopefully someobody puts their foot down and tells me what to do by the time i get back :D
1GB RAM is enough for everyday stuff. I've used 1GB for the last four years and it's been fine. Only now am I speccing 2GB. If it's a contest between faster CPU and more RAM for similar price, I'd get the faster CPU, every time. So long as the RAM is upgradeable (some of the thin & light laptops aren't), then it's an easy choice.
Discrete graphics is worth it if you game a lot. 9cell battery is worth it if you travel a lot and want extra battery life.
The rest is up to you.
I'd still avoid Phillips. Now I'm going back a long time (10 years), but we had some of their business 'server' hardware, and compared to similar hardware from other manufacturers (and I'm talking 10-15 other manufacturers as there were lots back then) it had to be the slowest, worst designed, tackiest, pile of steaming cow **** I used. No exceptions - though Siemens also put up a valient fight for that dubious honour.
As a result, if anyone says they want a Phillips computer, I'll spend all the time I have to convince them out of it. Kitten, you've been warned. :p ;D
LeperousDust
20-04-2007, 19:43
Yeah kitten if you want awesome, i've spent a fair time comparing the market this dell is the beast of the 12" notebooks, esp for the price! Graphics processor and ram is up to you, depending on what you need/want.... Which is where i fall :p
I *think* i'll get the £800 Go7400 1gig 2ghz T7200 because its something special i think. It really has everything! RAM is upgradable afaik but the 1gb version will be full so i'll have to sell some ram to upgrade it... Still small price to pay for an awesome notebook :)
Now im actually going out (i was getting ready before, when i come back i'll commit, promise (yeah right ;)) Kitten i'll be getting it next week and using it a fair amount and actually travelling 4+ hours a fair bit by train over the next coming month or two, so i can give you a very good review too. Anyways gotta toodle, im in an uber rush, byyye! :D
You'll need that 9cell battery to do that (though of course you can buy a spare later)

10 years is a long time to hold a grudge dude.
If Alex had asked for the same advice 3-4 years ago, I'd have told him to steer clear of Dell as, at the time, they were cheap plasticky and unreliable. Now, if anyone asks my advice on laptops, I automatically look to Dell first.
Do you have recent experience of Phillips laptops or are you slating them purely on bad experiences with Phillips server hardware from 10 years ago?
If you're going to advise people against a particular brand it may be more helpful to tell them why to avoid them rather than just saying "don't buy one" :)
Back on topic.
The discrete graphics will certainly be helpful with 1Gb RAM. The onboard version uses up to 256Mb of the system RAM, so running graphics intensive applications/games will reduce your available RAM by up to 1/4.
And I agree with Mark, for long periods of use, the 9 cell battery will be a must.
Of course, having a 512Mb GeForce Go 7900 card and 2Gb of RAM is lots of fun with a 17" screen at 1920x1200 :p ;)
Stan :)
To throw a slight curve ball - what's the rpm of the hard drive in those laptops? Best check they're at least 5400rpm. Though tbh even they do my **** in.
/strokes 7200rpm disk in laptop.
If you're going Vista (which you've listed) you'll want the 2Gb RAM. Vista loves RAM and uses as much as you chuck at it. I've got a spreadsheet open, MSN, media player and firefox with 20 tabs and am chewing about 1.2Gb of RAM with the system using the rest of my physical memory as a cache.

AFAIK, the minimum Dell use are 5400 rpm as standard with 7200 rpm available as an upgrade option.
Also, good point Feek. I've heard that Vista loves RAM - although I don't have personal experience as yet.
Stan :)
Fwiw the Vista laptop I'm using now has 1GB of RAM and it's good as gold :)

Jeez that is a lot. I just checked this rig and I'm only using about 750Mb running the Windows SMP Folding client, Firefox with 8 tabs open and MSN.
Stan :)
Most of that is probably Firefox. Leaks like a sieve.
Vista is fine in 1GB - wouldn't recommend less though.
Yes, I admit, my experiences with Phillips are old, so yes, they probably are a lot better now, but what I saw both from the hardware and their repair engineers was enough to put me off for good.
As for Dells of a few years ago, yes, they sure were plasticky, but unlike that old Phillips, they did actually work, and still do. The two 10-year-old ones under my desk back that up - worst I've had is a couple of fan failures and a disk that started to die (but worked long enough for a backup).
Stan_Lite
20-04-2007, 21:19
My experiences with older Dell laptops (4-5 years) are completely different. The 4-5 year old ones we have spend more time in the IT engineers workshop than they do on the rig. The newer ones are considerably more reliable.

Most of that is probably Firefox. Leaks like a sieve.
Drives me insane. That's why I use flock or camino, FF hogs all the processes.
Thanks Alex that would be really good. I hate buying such expensive stuff because I'm really indecisive, but if a friend has one and tries it and tells me it's all good then I'm a lot happier to go through with it!!

I'm really indecisive too :) Its the better end of a bad spectrum though!
If you don't get on with firefox, try opera. Its closed source and i think that helps in some cases... It has/does everything firefox does + the kitchen sink out of the box, web/newsgroup/bit torrent/mail/rss etc... but with the same or less (in my experience) memory usage. Extensions aren't available, but you don't need the usual "session saver" "mouse gestures" etc... because opera just does it anyway. "Widgets" are available though but they're just really dodgy versions of extensions and until they get their act together with those they're gimicky...
Anyways opera is free too, try it you may just like it :)

It's here! Been waiting at the door for it like a trained dof all day :embarrassed:!
Pictures uploading, first impressions are excellent, beats all the laptops i've personally ever used, its heavier than i thought, but i've never owned a latop, and i think i just expected it to be featherlight because its tiny. But it is still light!
Can't say anything bad about it yet, if you can afford the £680 one kitten i'm SURE you'll be more than happy :) And the extra £100 is (imo) more than worth it too! This Laptop goes for £1400 from Dell! So keep telling yourself that!

Kitten I wouldn't want to make the laptop look unweildingly small, i don't want to put you off it now do i?
Otherwise seriously its the size of an A4 piece of paper... apart from my 50% extra battery sticking out the back. 9Cell instead of 6Cell.

How much extra juice do you get from a 9cell battery?

I've never had the 6 cell so i wouldn't know :D
But what i do know is the battery came precharged, and i've had the laptop plugged in twice for a max of about 10-20 mins in total. I've been trying wireless for ages, not used bluetooth yet, had the screen brightness up and down, and general things. It's apparently still got an 1 hour 30 mins left according to dell battery meter. So either way i'd say it was pretty good, and the 6 cell will probably do! 9 cell sticks out a bit, but i actually like it to hold onto :) I wouldn't choose the smaller put it that way.
/Edit: i didnt say i've been using it *since* 3pm ish when it arrived today!
With a 2 hour 30 min gap where i just left it on went to tea and forgot about it, so it went to sleep :)

Right well heres an update because i'm bored and should be revising for an exam im going to fail tomorrow.
Pro's everything, serioosuly!
Very VERY fast
Neat little inbuild weccam
Its TINY!
Battery (9 cell) is excellent, 4 hours of good work + depending on screen brightness. It'll easy manage a dvd.
Keyboard feel solid and nice (metal magnesium alloy something or other)
four usb ports are handy especially for me.
Graphics on mine (go 7400) are top notch for a notebook
Fan it quiet, and rarely used if just web browsing email checking etc.. and i'm a sound freak (former reserator owner!)
Loads more too really
Cons
True bright screen or whatever, glossy wasn't a good idea, on bright days outside it sucks if your watching something black/dark coloured. But very good in the shade/night/dark etc...
Bottom right of keyboard (right arrow button only) is "mushy" i didnt actually notice it until i read about it,but now i have its a con, but i can easily live with it.
Nvidia drivers for vista are crap, but thats not dells fault and that should solve itself eventually
Gets pretty warm i think, but ive never owned a laptop, fan comes on occasionally, but i do make this laptop work very hard (external monitor keyboard and mouse) and i use it like a real desktop.
Heavier than other small laptops but its no where near "heavy" as in its annoying, easily portable in my experience :)
Any questions ask, but if anyones thinking about a laptop go get this one! :D
