View Full Version : Bikers without proper clothing

What is it with these people? I'm seeing far too many about in this weather who think it's fine to wear shorts and a t-shirt. See lots of youngsters on scooters (who are probably far more likely to come off) without proper gear. Hardly any have gloves and I saw a girl on the way home with a small skirt on :(

Then on the bypass in town I see a guy in a t-shirt. The thing is though, he had his dayglo Sam Browne belt on so he's obviously safety concious. Nobody is normally seen dead with one of these on, yet he thinks it's OK to wear one with a t-shirt and shorts

I know what you mean Desmo, my friend Russ is a biker and he's drilled it into me to wear protective clothing (when I eventually ride a bike), the thing he always got me with is the phrase "they get the stones and bits out of your bones with a wire brush" :( ewwwww

Even though it is baking hot, I still put on my leathers (not necessarily my race suit, usually just trousers and jacket) and gloves when I go for a ride.

In the USA a couple of years ago, saw a guy go past us at around 100mph with no helmet, shorts and a vest, weaving in and out of lanes. You just have to wonder sometimes.

That isn't at all uncommon in the US. A lot of states don't even require you to wear a crash hat whilst riding.

I want Von's extendable batton... just so I can sit by the road and see the little numpties coming up on their scooters and extend the baton into their front wheel...

I know it's cruel and evil, but it will teach them the value of wearing protective clothing when being muppets on bikes...

I actually remember reading a copy of a bike magazine and they put different clothing on a dummy and chucked it out a different speeds to see how much protection the clothing gave I think jeans and a t-shirt lasted 5 seconds.

I'm surprised they even lasted that long.

Well this is going from memory but I remember it being bugger all use whereas the leather suit gave the most closely followed by the jacket and trousers

I have to admit it's so tempting to do it, but I'd never do it.

In cyprus I must admit to riding around in short and t-shirts. But it's usually a scooter type thing, and it does feel quite nice.

I always go out with at least my leather jacket, thick jeans, boots, and gloves of course helmet too.

If I'm going for a proper blast I will put my leather trousers on too.

My ex came off his bike at under 30 miles per hour. He had top notch gear on, the leathers were beyond repair but did the job and his lid had huge gouges taken out of it.

The bruises and graze he got through race spec armoured leathers was shocking.

My last crash I ended up sliding down the road on my arse wearing Levi's and they actually held up pretty well.

The broken scaphoid(sp?) and shattered radial head (elbow) didn't help much though :(

Saw a kid on the way to work last night doing about 40 between 2 lanes of crawling traffic wearing shorts and t-shirt. He nearly hit the side of the bus that decided to change lanes in front of him.!!

I've had too many close calls with stupid car drivers to ever ride without a leather jacket and at least decent jeans gloves and boots.

I want another bike :( :'(

Won't catch me without me leather trousers off :D

I find it so hard to beleive that riders go out with just jeans and a T-shirt. Seems to be the Harley Davidson riders are the worse tbh. The A1 is nothing like Route 66 - dimwits

That is the point though, they do the job which your skin couldn't really do very well, it'll just either melt or wear away :(

Glad he was ok though.

I'm not criticising the gear at all Leo, but it doesnt bear thinking about what would have been left of his hip if he hadnt have had it all on. It did a brilliant job!

Bikers without protective gear on make me cringe :( Always extra wary when I see a biker nearby when I'm driving as I know how vulnerable they are.

I'm agreeing with you Pebbles :) It is the difference between life and death. Another mate who doesn't bike anymore is able to walk because the backbone thing in his jacket kept his spine in place when he came off at high speed :)

Caught 5th gear last night and they were testing a form of air bags for bikers. Essentially you wear a jacket which has inflatable cushions/air bags which inflate if you come off your bike. Currently it takes 0.5 seconds to inflate.

Just wondering what bikers thoughts were on the thing?

leowyatt

Haven't they been playing around the idea of airbags on the front forks. Sounds a bit odd to me

On a huge sodding high side that would really help. On a high speed low side I don't know if 0.5s is that useful, but it would certainly cushing the blow more. It's definitely a good idea, now if they can make the clothing look cool.... ;)

Never get on the bike without a reasonable amount of clobber on personally. At a minimum its 2 pairs of jeans, leather, boots and gloves.
I'll often wear a pair of hiking boots rather than bike boots, because I tend to do a lot of walking when I get off the bike and they're more comfy for that. But they're also waterproof, hardwearing and have quite a bit of ankle protection built in.

I can see one potential drawback of the airbag jacket idea - that you'll bounce rather than slide and so not slow down as quickly, therefore increase the chance of hitting something solid before you stop naturally. Swings and roundabouts ...

my favourite lack-of-correct-gear i ever saw, was a guy who nailed it past me on the motorway (way over 100mph) wearing a pair of shorts and a pair of converse with the laces flapping about by the back wheel. looked safe :/

A friend of mine very nearly lost his foot when he came off his bike. Fortunately he was wearing decent leathers/boots. If he hadn't been wearing them he would defintely have lost it.

It amazes me the stupidity of some people, I have always wanted a bike but I have never had one. Even I know the importance of good leathers, how can a biker not know it? amazing!

The reason I want to take you for a spin is to see you in leathers if I'm honest :embarassed:

Mic always tucks the laces of his trainers in if hes wearing them on a bike as in the past they have got hooked around the foot peg and he had to snap them

Must feel good with your wang whipping in the wind so to speak though....

I am starting to think in that little packet they give you when you pass your driving test, the one that comes with the bike test or CBT should have a photo of what happens when you don't wear the gear.
