I'm trying to get port forwarding to work on my crappy router, every time I set up the rule and then save it, restart the router and then test using the uTorrent port forwarding checker I get

Checking port 14172 on 88.XXX.XXX.XXX...

Error! Port 14172 does not appear to be open

Anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

What router do you have and what options did you try? Sometimes there is a particular technique you have to do to get options like this to 'save'.

It's a Safecom SWART2-54125, I followed the guide at portforwarding.com, 'Save All' and then restarted the router. Ixnay

Not one I've heard of. Is there an 'Add' button or similar somewhere that you have to click first?

Also, did you get the local IP right, and is the PC actually listening on that port (e.g. no software firewall in the way).

Not one I've heard of

Not surprised, it's a 20quid Ebuyer Extra Value special. POS.

There's a 'user' radio button to add 'user' rules (as opposed to Server, Games, VPN, App and Audio/Video rules), I create the rule with Protocol = TCP, port start = 14172, port end = 14172, port map = 14172, apply, save all and restart

Still nix

try adding the same port with UDP as well as TCP

try adding the same port with UDP as well as TCP

Still getting sub-30kB/s d/load speeds and port still reported as closed.

Router's going under the grill.

Are you using IE or Firefox to set up the router? Silly one I know but some of the cheaper routers seem to demand IE. :(

Fayshun

Firefox. I'll try IE.

*grumbles about crappy, cheap POS router*

Who is your isp? They could be throttling it.

Try a lower port like 5677 and select the option to encrypt the data too.

Throttling != blocking. Should still be able to make a connection.

He just said hes getting under 30k/s speeds, thus he is getting some data through?

Faysh, go to start -> Run -> CMD and type netstat -a. This will tell you what ports are open on your pc.

What firewall are you using btw? Zonealarm or windows firewall?

actually faysh, I think you have made an error with your port map. Instead of the port you want open, I think it should be the ip address of the pc to which you want the port to point to?

Separate problem though. Faysh is trying to get a port forwarded for DHT (this one I guess), and needs to then forward 6881-6889 for the actual p2p traffic. Without those ports forwarded, you will get some data, though not a lot.

Router doesn't support UPNP then Faysh?

That's what I thought as I read down, surely the map is the IP of the PC you're torrenting from?

The port map field you mean? Looks ok to me. Just giving the option to map to a different internal port (port 80 being the common one, keeps your internal site off default ports on the web).

Ive always wondered how this works fine for me when I haven't forwarded these ports in my router and turned UPNP off. I've been told UPNP is the spawn of the devil.

It has its uses. I have no problem using it at home - I have control over all the hosts on the network, and it's very convenient - particularly for Xbox Live. It has no place for corporate use of course

ahh.

Faysh, have you set your ip address on your computer instead of leaving it to DHCP? You then need to add it to a group and allow the port to farward to that group it would seem going from the instructions.

Tiscali, I suspect they do throttle me. I got a warning for heavy downloading during peak hours a few months back. I don't torrent during peak hours now.

Only just :(

Apparently 5667 is "listening" but uTorrent forwarding test site still reports 5667 as closed.

What firewall are you using btw? Zonealarm or windows firewall?

Windows firewall. Should I try ZoneAlarm instead?

Router doesn't support UPNP then Faysh?

It does. And it tell me it's enabled.

Not waving, only drowning...

Try adding an exception into windows firewall or better still download the much better zonealarm from zonelabs.com

STILL no joy.

Anyone suggest anything else to try? Except buying a proper router.:(

I'd have gone with the no firewall at all option before trying ZA. ;)

How about some screengrabs of the interface you're using to set the port forwarding so we can see what's going on. :)

Ok, now full of chicken and caesar salad, here goes.

Where the forwarding rules are applied

The forwarding rule for port 5667

As you can see in the first pic, it's been applied.

And this is the bit you get to when you click on 'Custom Forwarding' in pic 1, but I don't know what goes where...
