Well it was only a matter of time. Yet another hooray for the average clueless numbskull who thinks "bigger numbers = better".

http://allyours.virginmedia.com/html/internet/traffic.html

In terms of your average user, they could not tell the difference through browsing a 512k line and a 20mb line. Check the ratings 20mb line becomes 5mb after about 20mins use (full speed). For me on the 4mb line..... 750mb before I get 2mb???? Thats crap!

The main thing thats annoying is newsgroups.... I now need to find a client that will download at specified times. I have checked newsleecher, newsbin, none of them do it.

Yep thats the first thing I started to look for when I would this, a newsgroup reader which does timings :/

The best solution for me that the moment is to line everything up in Grabit and then VNC into my main rig in the morning before I go to work and kick it all off, but if it over runs to 4PM then I could cripple my connection for the evening :/

That is a way around it. If I put VNC onto the server, then I can tinker with it from work. :/

I can see me often hitting that limit, I tend to listen to net radio in the evenings.

Given the fact they've been trialling this for several months, it doesn't surprise me. Truly unlimited bandwidth usage *is* unsustainable at the rates typically being charged to home users. If you want uncontended service, you're going to have to pay for it.

Shock horror...
Virgin screwing the customer over. *ex-virgin employee here*

Still, at least they're being honest about it unlike some ISP's

Well either their figures are incredibly wrong or the Virgin infrastructure here is seriously dodgy..

Have been dropping as low as 20KB/s download at points :/

Either that or their idea of increasing XL to 20MB has, in this area, been at the expense of screwing everyone that isn't on XL :s

Not surprised really, Eclipse have told me that they're limiting bandwidth betwixt 18:00 and midnight and I've noticed it.

Think I'm going to have to start cron jobbing any torrents that are running :D make sure it gets killed off at 15:45 and starts again after midnight.

Torrents are easy to schedule times for, Azureus does this with a simple plug in. For speed newsgroups >>>>> torrents.

Doesn't newleecher have a schedule client? Sure it does, i haven't used it in almost a year now because i cant access nntp direct from uni so it got deleted. But check the program again, newsleecher is one of the most feature rich newsreaders out there. Especially the last beta i checked out (which will certainly be mainstream now!).

Don't you have to pay for that?

MB, you download all day from newsgroups, and your asking do you have to pay? ;D There is a freeish or cheaper version i can't remember, and a slightly more expensive one with "supersearch" which is like a crap newzbin (ie dont pay for supersearch ;) )

It's pretty easy to fall about newsleechers programs and if not by all means PM me, i may not use it until i'm in my flat next year but i sure as hell can get it...

I've noticed that the torrents have been dropping my Internet connection for some reason?? It'll work fine for the torrent but as soon as I want to use it for internet access, i have to disable then re-enable the connection?

So are you saying that the XL isn't worth it now?

XL is worth it.

I'd guess the torrents could be causing issues with your router.

XL is worth it for burst speed but if you max out your connection for more than a quarter of an hour during peak times (4-12) they are going to pin you back to 5Mb for 4 hours as punishment.

Obviously the trick is to schedule all d/l'ing for outside those times. This is going to screw the idea of legit internet downloading of movies being used as an alternative to Blockbuster for example, because if you d/l a file the size of a DVD by the time you get a quater of the way through you're going to get hit by the traffic shaping :/

Aha, the version of newsleecher that I had didn't seem to do it. If I can schedule the downloads then thats better still, though I still think I will install winvnc for remote tinkering from work :)

Thats a damn good point MB, all this limiting is really going to put a dent in the business plans by bbc and ilk to stream shows over the net using a form of p2p

Kinda lucky as I'm only downloading relatively small files - not native High-Def stuff. I VPN home first thing if I want something, and I'm normally done by midday/early afternoon - even on my paltry 2MB.
